Shin Wolford is the main character of Kenja no Mago. Though hailed a prodigal genius for his unique methods of spellcasting and inventing, Shin is only using the memories of his first life on Earth to better understand and improve the world around him.
He was voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi in Japanese and Daman Hills and Alison Viktorin as a child in English.
Overview[]
Shin is the main protagonist of the manga. Initially an average Japanese salary man, he died in a traffic accident and was reincarnated in another world, where his new parents were killed by a demonoid while riding in a chariot. The then-toddler Shin was found by Merlin Wolford who raised him as his own grandson with the help of his ex-wife Melinda, growing up to become an astonishingly versatile mage.
Shin was raised primarily by Merlin, with Melinda often visiting. Other visitors were Mikhail, Chris, Seig and Dis, all of whom he saw as surrogate family; though Merlin never mentioned that they were actually important people from the nearby kingdom. On his 15th birthday, Shin realized how unworldly he was due to Merlin's incompetence in teaching him basic life skills in a civilization; Shin only knew how to hunt and do magic. Since the traveler merchant Hague only ever did business with Merlin, Shin didn't know how the value of money worked in this world. At Dis's suggestion, Shin enrolled in the magic academy in his kingdom to learn about the world and to meet kids his own age; considering the only ones close in age to him were Chris and Sieg (a decade older), this would help iron out his social awareness issues.
Once enrolled, he quickly become smitten with Sicily von Claude, but was largely unaware of his crush; though she reciprocated soon after. Per noble traditions, they soon became engaged. On their shared sixteenth birthday, they slept together for the first time.
Shin often found himself the butt of jokes pulled by Dis's son Aug, whom convinced the rest of the S Class students to found the Ultimate Magic Study Group in order for Shin to teach them how to improve as magicians. Their group later became known as the Ultimate Magicians, to combat demonoids created by Strom, a powerful demonoid who retained his reasoning.
Appearance[]
Shin is a handsome young man who has a light skin complexion. He also has purple hair and eyes. Shin wears a white long-sleeved shirt and blue vest. He also wears black pants and brown shoes.
Abilities[]
Due to his knowledge of science from his past life, Shin is able to analyze and comprehend how magic actually functions and apply it in new, more effective ways that nobody ever thought of before, since he can understand chemical composition. Because of this his most powerful fire attack crests a mushroom cloud explosion equal to a nuke.
Shin is also a great inventor once he becomes inspired, creating long distance call devices like phones and being able to enchant clothing with magical abilities no-one could, due to his outside the box common sense.
He's also been through the training of hell thanks to Michel. So, he's just as good as a fighter.
- Immense Offense Magic Power: Shin has capabilities to create powerful magic that if it is not properly controlled, he can easily destroy the kingdom itself or even the world. His fire magic which is used to obliterate 100 demons, destroys the forest's landscape in chapter 12. His light magic which is projected from the sun in chapter 9, cannot be blocked and dodged even by Schtrom, leaving him severely injured.
- Immense Defense Magic Power: Shin can cast a powerful magic barrier in less than a second, he also can enchant accessories, uniform (basically outfit) to provide a National Grade Treasure/extremely strong protection. He can also cast magic to strengthen his body.
- Outstanding Combat Tactics : Capability to cast magic quickly without chanting and also a great strategy employed in chapter 65 makes the enemy had a hard time to defend his attack. Including Schtrom in chapter 9 who taunts Shin's fake clumsy strike implying that Shin is afraid, only to be surprised and injured by his unprecedented sunlight magic.
- Very High Defense and Attack stats : Can use offense and defense magic simultaneously just like how multiple computer programs run, which is shocking to demons
- Wide 360° Attack Range : With the help of wide 360° range search magic to detect enemies and target magic to 'lock on' the offense magic into the enemies, Shin is able to cast multiple powerful offense magic which have 100% chance to hit the enemies and also powerful defense magic to any direction.
- Extreme Reflex and Casting Speed : It is stated in chapter 65 of the manga, that it didn't even took a second for him to cast a strong magic barrier to block demon's surprise attack from behind. Also, he is capable of dodging Schtrom's magic attack
- All Elements Magic Mastery : He can use water, earth (stone, dirt), fire, lightning, sunlight, explosion, and wind magic to attack his enemy.
- Immense Swordmanship and Martial Arts : Trained by the legendary Michel makes him also treacherous when duelled in sword and melee combat. It is shown in chapter 2 where 3 armed thugs got defeated flawlessly in ease
- Immense Healing Magic : Shin has better healing capability than Sicily, shown in chapter 12 when Sicily failed to heal a dying person, Shin is there to help her and eventually succeeded. Then in chapter 60, he successfully heal the severely poisoned and injured pope which is said to be a miracle if the pope could be healed.
- Fearless : Schtrom, despite being adored by the other dangerous human demons like Miria for his immense strength, doesn't scare Shin a bit.
- Exceptional Enchantment Ability : His enchantment on his uniform is graded as National Treasure for its immense protection, he also able to enchant a sword so that it require no strength at all to cut through even the powerful demon. He also can enchant his boots so it can give Shin capability to move faster and fly for a while in chapter 1-9. He can also give flying enchantment to the outfit to make the wearer fly . Eventually in chapter 56, he is able to enchant some hair treatment tools. He also invent a mass enchanter to enchant all of the military guards swords in a kingdom quickly in chapter 67.
- Fast Travel : He only need to use his gate magic to move between places he had been visited before.
- Previous Life Experience : Science knowledge from the previous life which is in 21st century, helps Shin to understand better how magic or something is created/works which eventually leads him to cast even better magic or invent something new.
- Teaching : Shin is able to teach even the first year student of magic school to be able to obliterate some dangerous demons with ease
