Shirayuki is the main protagonist of the Snow White with the Red Hair anime and manga series.
She is voiced by Saori Hayami in the Japanese version and Brina Palencia in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Two of Shirayuki's most distinctive traits are her bright red hair and green eyes. She also wears a decent variety of different outfits throughout the series. Most commonly, she wears a beige dress with red sleeves and a red collar, but after becoming a court herbalist in training, she occasionally wears a white uniform. For certain more formal occasions, she has also worn dresses, such as a light green one when she was initially going to attend a ball in Tanbarun prior to being kidnapped first by Kazuki, then by the Claw of the Sea pirates, which she then ends up wearing throughout the entire ordeal. After the situation is resolved, she then wears a pink, but otherwise similar one for the make-up ball that Raj holds upon her safe return. For such occasions, she also has her hair done up.
Personality[]
Shirayuki is a bright and resourceful girl, determined, able to speak her mind, and very knowledgeable when it comes to herbs and how to best apply their medicinal properties. Due to the way she was raised by her grandparents and had to subsequently take care of herself, she's very independent, so whenever a problem or conflict arises, she will often take matters into her own hands. She is likewise very strong-willed, set on following her own path in life and doing what she knows to be right, regardless of what others try to tell her. However, throughout the series, she learns to rely on others a little more, especially Zen.
Shiraryuki is also notable for being very kind, compassionate and forgiving. She genuinely enjoys helping others, especially when it comes to treating injuries or illnesses they have by applying her knowledge of herbs to create the appropriate medicine, hence why she became an herbalist in her home town to begin with. However, she even shows care towards those who have wronged her in some way or another like Raj and Mihaya, particularly the former, whom she stopped from taking a medicine that wasn't made for him and later trying to establish a better relationship with him when she is temporarily summoned back there to attend a ball he's holding, and even with the latter, she made sure to give him medicine for a paralyzing agent she used in self-defense against him despite him kidnapping and planning to sell her to a wealthy nobleman. She later reveals during her visit back to Tanbarun that she highly values the connections she makes with those around her, which is why she tries so hard to establish positive relationships with anyone that she can, even if they get off to bad starts like with Raj, hence why she tries so hard to not let it go to waste. Because of this, combined with her strong will and refusal to back down even when intimidated by even those of a higher social status, she has earned the respect of many people.
Despite being very knowledgeable and self-sifficient on many things, Shirayuki is also shown to be quite innocent, naive and inexperienced when it comes to romance and love. This is shown when she gets very flustered and quiet when Zen first reveals his romantic feelings by kissing her, after which she needs to take a while to sort out her own feelings and realize she reciprocates his affections, which intimidates her since she admits she's never felt that way before about anyone else.
Biography[]
Shirayuki was initially born in the mountains to Mukaze and her unnamed mother, but shortly after, she was sent to Tanbarun to be raised by her grandparents. Because she was born with rare red hair, she was taught by them from a young age how to hide it to avoid attracting unwanted attention. Due to her strong interest and in herbs and medicine, she grew up to be an herbalist and became so talented at it that she opened her own clinic in town where a bar used to be, with it being shown that she has a decent amount of regular customers that she has a good rapport with. However, when the prince of Tanbarun, Raj Shenazard, sends one of his soldiers on his behalf to order her to be his concubine, after finishing all her current orders, she cuts her hair and leaves it behind before proceeding to flee the kingdom.
Independent and persistent, she meets Zen on her second day in the neighboring kingdom of Clarines and befriends him after tending to a minor wound he received, but he then eats a poisoned apple that Raj sent for her so that she would be immobolized and he could take her back. Therefore, Shirayuki goes back to the castle and temporarily agrees to be his concubine in exchange for the antidote to the poison. Just then, Zen bursts into the room, having fought his way through his guards, and reveals that he's largely okay due to having built up an immunity to poison. He then reveals that he's actually the second prince rather than just a commoner like Raj assumed, meaning if public word were to get out over him poisoning him, it could result in war between their kingdoms. Zen then uses the threat of going public with Raj's unscrupulous actions to make him promise to leave Shirayuki alone and not pursue her any further, which a terrified Raj quickly agrees to. Zen then gives Shirayuki the chance to air any grievances she has, during which she jokingly offers him a poisoned apple before more seriously demanding he still give Zen the antidote before leaving it at that. Zen then talks to her afterward about being free to choose her own path, after which she follows him back to Clarines to make a new life there.
Shortly after settling down in Clarines, she decides to become a court herbalist, and after passing the exam for it, she starts an apprenticeship at the castle where she trains under Garack and Ryu. Shirayuki has demonstrated her abilities as a pharmacist in various situations, particularly in identifying and controlling disease outbreaks in foreign areas. She has a close relationship with Zen, and falls in love with him over the course of the story despite opposition due to their difference in social status. She moves into the east wing of Wistal Castle in chapter 49, and is later reassigned as a pharmacist to Lyrias for two years in chapter 53.
