| “ | You think you're cool? Sharks call ME cold-blooded. But you can call me Shiver! | „ |
| ~ Shiver's introduction in Return of the Mammalians. |
Shiver is a major character in Splatoon 3. She is a member of Deep Cut (along with Frye and Big Man), and is one of the hosts of Anarchy Splatcast, providing the news regarding the current stages, as well as the Splatfest events, taking over the role that the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook had in the previous games.
Splatoon 3's single player campaign Return of the Mammalians reveals she, as well as the rest of Deep Cut, secretly work as bandits, scouring the Splatlands for treasure to sell for the poor. This puts them in conflict with the New Squidbeak Splatoon for most of the game, until they eventually feel remorse for their acts, making amends with the New Squidbeak Splatoon, and helping New Agent 3 save the world from Mr. Grizz.
She is voiced by Anna Sato.
Personality[]
Shiver is characterized as being somewhat cold, aloof and mysterious. She can also be pretty arrogant, and is the rudest towards the New Squidbeak Splatoon in Return of the Mammalians, and likes to make fun of her bandmates during Anarchy Splatcast. She can also be somewhat competitive during Splatfests, acting self-assured of her victory in the Pokémon X Splatoon Splatfest after winning the past 2 ones. Likewise, in the Return of the Mammalians she acts very extravagantly, using lots of fan motions and dramatic expressions, as well as using formal language in her Tableturf lines.
However, Shiver does have a heart of gold, as the reason she is banditing in the Splatlands is to provide wealth for the poverty in Splatsville, and helps the New Squidbeak Splatoon save the world from Mr. Grizz. She also seems to be somewhat insecure about her own cool and perfect image, being frustrated at being unable to defeat the new Agent 3 and seems to be so humiliated by one of her own defeats that she has kept a count of it accurate to the seconds, as well as seeming somewhat clumsy in actuality, accidentally dropping her smoke bomb and blowing herself up in her boss outro. Her insecurity is further showcased in her Tableturf dialogue, where she seems incredibly elated to win and upon losing, begs Agent 3 for a rematch to redeem herself. Shiver also appears to be a bit less unintelligent than her bandmates as during her dialogue in the Dark VS Milk VS White Chocolate Splatfest, she forgets what antioxidants in dark chocolate do but just reasons that since dark chocolate is good, the chemical must be good for people as well.
Biography[]
Splatoon 3[]
Shiver and the rest of Deep Cut first appear in the game as the hosts of Anatchy Splatcast.
She, along with the rest of the trio, have a major role in Return of the Mammalians, first mysteriously appearing after New Agent 3 has defeated DJ Octavio. They appear again at the end of the first site, introducing themselves to the New Squidbeak Splatoon and claiming they own the Splatlands.
Shiver is the boss of the fourth site, "Landfill Dreamland". In her boss fight, she is seen piloting her shark, Master Mega, as she tries to defeat the new Agent 3, while guarding her treasure. She and the rest of Deep Cut appear again after the Captain of the NSS uses all of the treasure the Splatoon obtained from Deep Cut to cut away all of the lethal Fuzzy Ooze blocking the way to the space centre where Craig Cuttlefish and Mr. Grizz are located. The trio demand the NSS to give them the treasure, to which Marie just states that they're done with it, so they can have it. This shocks Deep Cut, and makes them have a change of heart, feeling guilt for attacking the Splatoon, and even decides to ask Marie to be their boss, revealing their intentions to sell the treasure to raise funds for the poor.
The NSS find Mr. Grizz, who takes off on a rocket while revealing his plans to end all sea life by coating the planet in his Fuzzy Ooze in order to bring back the mammals, and Cuttlefish, who has been dehydrated by Grizz and is stuck in his frail, drained squid form, albeit thankfully alive, after which Deep Cut arrive on the scene and help Agent 3 reach the rocket that Grizz is on, with Shiver lending them Master Mega to ride and reach the rocket. Later, after Agent 3 and their Smallfry is saved by DJ Octavio, Shiver, the rest of Deep Cut and the Squid Sisters sing the Calamari Inkantation, which has a mysterious, magical aura which allows the Smallfry to transform into Hugefry while Agent 3 and Octavio vacuum up the ooze-covered fuzzballs on Grizz's body and fire all of the ooze back at him, defeating him and saving the planet.
Trivia[]
- Due to having a somewhat androgynous look and not being referred to with any gender-specific language before the release of Splatoon 3, fans were unsure what Shiver's gender is, with many speculating that she could be non-binary. However, it was eventually confirmed by official sources that she is female and uses "she/her" pronouns in-game.
- She is the second Splatoon idol to be an Octoling, after Marina of Off the Hook.
- She is the first seen Octoling in the Splatoon series to never have been a part of DJ Octavio's army.
- Shiver's singing style resembles traditional Japanese singing, even incorporating kakegoe into her live performances, which her voice actress is said to have a background in.
- Likewise, Shiver's mannerisms resemble that of a rakugoka, a traditional Japanese comic storyteller who tells stories with dramatic head tilts and fan actions. Specifically, her mannerisms resemble a rakugoka in the Kyoto style, who are known for their use of musical performances and having a less "refined" style than the Tokyo rakugoka, matching up with the theme of chaos in Splatoon 3.
- In the Japanese version of Splatoon 3, Shiver also speaks in a very noticeable Kyoto variant of the Kansai dialect, pronouncing some words differently from standard Japanese and using various Kansai idioms.
