Shizu Shinazugawa is a minor character from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, making her only appearances in Chapter 115 of the manga and episode 50 of the anime adaptation. She is Genya and Sanemi Shinazugawa's late mother.
Shizu does not speak as a Ki, though the anime has her voiced by Ryoka Yuzuki.
Descrption[]
Personality[]
Prior to her transformation into a blood-thirsty Demon, Shizu was a protecting, loving mother to her children, being abused by her husband Kyōgo who also abused her children. She is a hard worker who labored all day and hardly slept. She is also very brave, with several scenes having her use herself as a shield to stop Kyōgo despite how petite of a frame she had. In the afterlife, she could not stand to be with the children she was forced to kill, despite the fact that she could not control her actions and that her children's deaths were actually the fault of the man responsible for her transformation into a Ki.
Appearance[]
Shizu is a short woman of petite frame with black hair fastened in a low bun and big blue eyes, wearing a yellow long-sleeved kimono.
History[]
Shizu first appeared in the To Be a Hashira chapter, the 115th chapter of the manga, where she is shown in a flashback that Genya Shinazugawa was having in what would've been his last moments at Sekido's hands as the Ki preps his staff to smash Genya's skull to protect Hantengu. At some point, Shizu and Kyōgo got married, but the marriage became very abusive (when has never been revealed), and Kyōgo often took his outbursts against his children. Shizu, having become nowhere near as cruel, shielded the Shinazugawa children from Kyōgo's wrath until his death at the hands of someone else. Despite this, Shizu worked hard and labored as many hours as possible to keep her children well. One night, she failed to return home at the expected time. It is later revealed that someone, likely Muzan, had turned Shizu into a Ki, which kills Genya and Sanemi's siblings when they go to greet her. (Whether any of them survived or not is unknown, although the chances of survival during Shizu's raid on her own home are highly unlikely due to all of them shedding blood.) Sanemi engages his mother in a duel for Genya's sake and eventually knocks her out, leaving her to decay in the sun, which Genya finds to his horror.
Shizu later appears in the final battle, when Sanemi is wounded by Muzan following the final battle. Sanemi calls to his mother and tries to bring her to heaven with him, but she turns down his offer, as she feels that her children will hate her for how she took their lives. Sanemi offers to go to hell by her side, but is brought back to life by Kyōgo, much to his dismay.
Trivia[]
- Etymology: Shizu's given name means "purpose haven." (written 志津) Her surname, Shinazugawa, means "deathless stream." (written 不死川)
