“ | What I think, Sakuta-kun, is that life is here for us to become kinder. I live life every day hoping I was a slightly kinder person than I was the day before. | „ |
~ An older Shoko to Sakuta Azusagawa. |
Shoko Makinohara is one of the main characters of the Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai light novel and anime series, and the tritagonist of the movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. She's a girl who appears in two forms, one as a pre-teen middle schooler and an older one who comes from the future, who is around 18. She's also Sakuta's first love interest, and she frequently comes to his help throughout the series.
She was voiced by Inori Minase in Japanese and Risa Mei in English.
Personality and history[]
Shoko is very kind, idealistic and compassionate. Her daily goal is to be a little bit kinder each day, which she teaches Sakuta as well. Kid Shoko is somewhat shy and a huge cat lover, while older Shoko is pretty outgoing and cheerful. Sakuta and Mai meet both versions of Shoko as the series goes on and offer hospitality to both of them. It's later discovered that Sakuta's chest scars bleed as the older Shoko - who comes from the future - appears in front of him; this happens as younger Shoko actually has a terminal heart disease, and future Shoko reveals Sakuta is going to die in a car accident, and his heart will be transplanted into her. As Mai hears of this situation, she decides to become Shoko's heart donor and sacrifice herself to prevent Sakuta's death in the accident, saving both Shoko and Sakuta's lives. With Mai's sacrifice, future Shoko reappears and reveals to a desperate Sakuta that Mai's heart was transplanted into her. That said, she also offers to Sakuta the possibility to go back in time and avert Mai's death, but this would imply the death of the little Shoko from the present. That said, Sakuta and Mai also have the possibility to change timeline to allow Shoko to be healthy and cheerful again, but at the cost of likely sacrificing the memories of each other and all the rest. Nevertheless, not only they recognize each other in the new timeline, but they meet a healthy kid Shoko with her parents on the beach, and they all recognize each other.
