A first-year university student knowledgeable about Digimon and Digimon cards. Skilled at breaking the ice with people, he's so adept at charming and inviting newly met acquaintances out for meals that he's sometimes called "supernaturally social." However, he also has a tendency to give up at crucial moments in competitions that has been causing him trouble.

Shoto is a very friendly person, rapidly creating an affective bond with his partner Muchomon, also he has the tendency to study all about whatever he is interested, even surpassing the knowledge of a rookie player like Arisa. However, he is very insecure about his abilities and knowledge that has been causing him to giving up in crucial things as Digimon Card Game tournaments, because he ends losing in a match or he thinks that he isn't very good at all, even if he has the enough knowledge of that.

Shoto is watching in his phone nervously the final match of Digimon Card Game World Championship between Owen Dreadnought, his favorite card game player and the defending champion of the past year, and Zenith, a talented and very polular card game challenger, but he ends up dissapointing because Owen lost the match. After that, he is called by her childhood friend Arisa Kinosaki who he thinks that she is gonna mock him because the Owen's loss, however, her real plan it's inviting him into Digimon Liberator, an arcade game where they can play the Digimon Card Game in a metaverse. Initially, because of his insecurity he declines her offer, but she convinces him telling him that Owen announced that he will enter into the arcade game to compete the recently announced Digimon Card Game World Championship. After they arrive on the game, Shoto manifested Muchomon in the virtual world as his Digimon partner, and rapidly created a affective bond.
