Shrek is the titular main protagonist of the 1990 comedy picture book Shrek! created by William Steig.
Biography[]
Shrek is a hideous fire-breathing green monster who enjoyed causing misery to others with his repulsiveness. One day, Shrek's parents decided that he needed see more of the world and kicked him out of their home in the swamp.
Shrek soon met a witch who told his future in exchange for some of his rare lice. She told Shrek that he was destined to find a knight with the help of a donkey and marry a princess who is as ugly as he is. Shrek then comes across a singing peasant farming and causes him to faint with his menacing glare so he can cook up some cold pheasant the peasant had in his bag. People fled from the sight of Shrek as he walked by them while the forces of nature attempted to strike him down with lightning. But Shrek simply opened his mouth and ate the lightning bolt, belching up smoke as the storm receded. He soon encountered more trouble when he was pinned under the foot of a vicious dragon. Shrek escaped by spitting blue fire in its eyes before taking a nap and having a nightmare about being hugged by children.
Sometime later, Shrek met the donkey that he was prophesied to meet and mounted the animal while demanding to be taken to a knight. He finds the prophetical knight guarding a castle where the princess is kept then blasts him into the moat with his flaming breath when refused entry. Entering the castle, Shrek nervously makes his way through a hall of mirrors that reflect his own horrifying visage back at him before meeting the hideous princess sitting on her throne. The two of them fell in love at first sight and got married as soon as possible, living "horribly ever after".
Trivia[]
- In Shrek Forever After, in the musical ambush scene, you can see a shot of an ogre that looks almost identical to the original Shrek created by the late William Steig, but it doesn't mean there are two Shreks in the franchise. It's possible that the creators of the movie used the original design as a nod to the source material, or perhaps they wanted to pay homage to the original character. In any case, there is only one main Shrek character in the DreamWorks franchise, and that is the one voiced by Mike Myers in the movies.
