~ Shunichi Maki. |
Shunichi Maki is the main protagonist of Tsuburaya Productions's 2004 superhero film ULTRAMAN and the overarching protagonist of the Ultra N Project series. He is the first holder of the Ultraman Noa in his first very form THE NEXT, and a determinated fighter pilot.
He was potrayed by Tetsuya Bessho.
History[]
UlTRAMAN[]
Origins[]
As a young boy, Maki's encounter with a fighter plane sparked his dream of becoming a pilot. Years later, he was a skilled fighter pilot, happily married to Yoko with a young son. However, their son suffered from a congenital blood disorder, and Maki was advised to retire to spend time with him.
Last Flight and Incident[]
While confiding in his friend, Gou Kurashima, about his struggles, an urgent scramble order came in for an unidentified flying object breaching Japanese airspace. Kurashima's plane malfunctioned, but Maki continued the chase. The object disappeared from radar, only to reappear in front of him, causing a crash. Maki found himself in a luminous tunnel and met a light entity before losing consciousness.
Waking up in a hospital, Maki, now Shunichi, decided to leave the Air Force and work as a tour plane pilot, focusing on his family. His life took a sudden turn when Sara, a mysterious woman in black, hijacked his plane mid-flight. She forced him to land, and he was taken by military forces to a secure facility.
There, he learned of a similar UFO incident where a young man, Takafumi Udo, had transformed into a monstrous being. Udo escaped, and Maki experienced a psychic vision of the Beast's escape. Mistaken for Udo, Maki was imprisoned. As he awaited his fate, he sensed the Beast approaching and desperately demanded to be released.
Battle against The One[]
Maki escaped the bunker, just as the One slaughtered the army unit stationed to stop it, leaving only Sara unharmed. As Maki attracted the creature's attention, he was struck by the One's thoughts and narrowly dodged its attacks. However, the light within Maki surged, transforming him into a giant warrior covered in silver armor. Surprised but determined, Maki battled the One, ultimately kicking it into a wall. When the creature threatened Sara, Maki shielded her, but the One gained the upper hand, strangling him with its tail.
Discovering a new power, Maki severed the tail and fought back, unleashing a powerful energy attack that wounded the beast. Though the One retreated, knowing it would die if it stayed, Maki collapsed, weak and drained, and reverted to his human form. He encountered Ultraman in a light tunnel again, but before he could ask why him, he awoke in a hospital room with Sara. Sara revealed that Maki's transformation was no accident and that Udo had predicted someone like him would become an enemy to the One. Maki rejected her manipulation, refusing to be a "useful monster." When he saw a news story revealing the One's location near his family, Maki reluctantly agreed to help.
Maki rushed to the hospital, driven by visions of his son Tsugumu. Using his superhuman strength, he stole a jeep and made his way to the hospital. There, Tsugumu, exhausted but awake, told Maki to follow his dreams, assuring him he wouldn't be unhappy if Maki did.
Final Confrontation[]
After promising his son Tsugumu that he would take him flying, Maki joined Sara in Shinjuku’s sewers. They discovered Udo, who was confused and human. To prevent another mistake, Sara shot him, but it was revealed that the One was manipulating them. Maki and the One then transformed into Ultraman the Next and Beast the One, respectively. As Ultraman gained the upper hand, the One evolved into a larger form and attacked the city. Ultraman saved a mother and child, and during their fight, Maki discovered he could fly, using his newfound ability to dodge attacks.
The One summoned crows to form wings, and they engaged in an aerial battle. Maki, weakened, realized his death would also mean the death of Ultraman. Drawing strength from thoughts of his family, Maki merged fully with Ultraman, and together they defeated the One in a final battle. With the help of fighter jets, Maki cut off the One’s wings and used his finishing beam to destroy it.
Fate[]
A month later, Maki fulfilled his promise to Tsugumu, taking him on a flight. He met Ultraman once more, who revived his life force, allowing Maki to live and keep his promise to his son.
Personality[]
Shunichi is a caring family man and a good-hearted person. After learning about his illness, Shunichi opted to spend more time with his family when he still have the chance as they are his everything. He shows himself to be a honorable person, as when he first transform into Ultraman the Next, he embraced it to fight the monster in hopes of protecting others despite they are a stranger to him.
Despite reluctantly accepting his role as a protector, Maki eventually merged with Ultraman to finally defeat the beast while knowing that he might not live to see another day. In the end, he thanked Ultraman before seeing the spirit moving away to choose it's next chosen one.

Trivia[]
- Originally, Shunichi was meant to be the remake counterpart of Shin Hayata before Ultra N Project was finalized. Both characters possessed traits similar to one another as Shuinichi is a pilot and don a red airplane fighter as well. Is it noted that both Shuinichi and Shin forget about their time as a Ultraman and lived a quite normal life after, even though Shin did regain his ability as an Ultra later on. The Next also looks a lot more fragile and thin in comparison to its complete counterpart.
- Similar to Jun Himeya, Shunichi briefly died before was ressurected by Ultraman.
- Another staff member who worked on the series shares the latter name.[1]
- Unlike the other Deunamists, Shuinichi was the only one known for using will-power to summon his Ultraman form.
