Hero Overview

Honest people... always seemed pretty stupid to me. I've always loved messing with people who try too hard at life. I hated selflessness. It's probably because I was jealous. They all had something I was missing. It was like they could always see what a pathetic and small-minded person I really was. I was always afraid.
~ Chishiya opening up to Arisu.

Shuntarō Chishiya is a main character of the Netflix show Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name. Chishiya is a complex but exceptionally intelligent character, as he seems to outsmart the games he plays at every turn and manages to manipulate the people he comes across.

He is a reference to the Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

He was voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese version of the OVA adaptation and by Blake Jackson in the English version. In the TV series, he is portrayed by Nijiro Murakami and voiced by Daniel Brochu in English.

Personality[]

Chishiya is a calm, collected, and extremely intelligent person. However, he was also manipulative, cold-hearted, and cynical. He always seems detached to everything and everyone. Although later on, he develops respect for people like Arisu and Kuzuryu. He also seems to care for Kuina (especially in the TV series, where she is his closest ally and friend).

As result of his past (in the manga, due to never receiving any love from his parents; in the TV series, due to becoming disillusioned by his profession), Chishiya grew up to be an apathetic person. He is always unbothered, even in the worst situations. In fact, more than once during the games, Chishiya gambled and let fate decide if he would survive while keeping the usual carefree expression and sometimes even an amused face. Chishiya is truly fearless, but that is because he doesn't care about anything, including his own life.

Also because of his background, Chishiya holded the belief that humanity is inherently selfish, as seen when Arisu begins calling out where the tagger is, he notes how it is a good idea but then continues to say that no one will try to help. He used to believe that true compassion, selflessness, and loyalty are weaknesses, especially within a world as cruel and unforgiving as the Borderlands. When he saw someone as selfless and compassionate as Arisu, he would take advantage, knowing that they are trustworthy and would use them as pawns in his plans.

In the Borderlands, Chishiya started to change his views on humanity thanks to the people he met there. Being around genuinely altruistic people and those who would rather die than betray their morals, like Arisu and Kuzuryu, moved him in a way that he started to question his own purpose of existance. This led him to want to act "uncharacteristically" as when he took a bullet to save Usagi's life as a way to try to change himself. He later confessed that he was actually envious of people that are truly selfless and try too hard because he missed these qualities in himself. After returning to the real world, despite not remembering the Borderlands, the experience there still affected him in a way he realized he was wasting his life, so he wants to change and become a better person.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Before he was transported into the Borderlands he worked as a doctor, specifically practicing in pediatric cardiovascular surgery. Chishiya treated a young boy by the name of "Hayato" where Chishiya tries to reassure and comfort him about the treatment he will receive. However, this comes crashing down when what seems to be his mentor gives him a notice that the surgery will be post-poned due to make room for surgeries for more beneficial and important patients who'd given donations to the hospital.

At first, Chishiya is wondering about how to break the bad news to the mother of Hayato. The delayed surgery resulted in Hayato's death. While Chishiya watched the mother crying about the loss of her son, he was told by his colleague that he shouldn't feel bad because doctors should sacrifice their ideals as part of their job. This is the first moment where Chishiya begins to realize what the real world is truly like and when this same occurrence happens repeatedly to him and future patients, his doubtful and cynical attitude grows.

Five of Clubs[]

The first appearance we see of Chishiya in the TV series, is in the second episode of the first season where we see Chishiya listening to music and also taking advantage of the game venue's electricity to charge up his hand-crafted taser.

He doesn't do much, only really going to the highest point of the building and watching all the other players run from the tagger. However this was to observe and make sure he doesn't draw attention to himself, only finally moving when he figured out where the symbol was.

He and Arisu were on the same track, as they both figured it out at pretty much the same time as they go into the room together. They figure out that there are two taggers, and when the second tagger is about to kill Chishiya from behind, Arisu warns him to lookout and Chishiya uses his taser against the tagger.

After much fighting and when Arisu gets in the room, he needs a second person in there to press the two buttons at the same time and Chishiya makes it out alive all thanks to Arisu and Usagi.

The Beach[]

While at the Beach, Chishiya seeing how Hatter's Utopia is looking more like a Dystopia, he plans on stealing all of the playing cards from the Beach. This continues when he sees Arisu and Usagi walk into the Beach as newly recruited members and talks with Kuina about how they could fit into the plan.
