The Black Panther lives. And when he fights for the fate of Wakanda, I will be right there beside him.
~ Shuri to her brother T'Challa.
I'm the Black Panther, and I'm here for retribution.
~ Shuri to Namor.

Shuri is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She is the princess and the main technology innovator from the little known but technologically advanced country Wakanda. Following the loss of almost her entire family, namely her older brother T'Challa and mother Ramonda, Shuri took the mantle of the ancestral protector of Wakanda, the Black Panther.

She is portrayed by Letitia Wright, who also portrayed Rosalie Otterbourne in the 2022 film adaption of Death on the Nile and also voiced Nooshy in Sing 2.

Personality[]

Shuri shows herself to be compassionate, as she shows great enthusiasm in showing her inventions, and has a great love for American culture. She has a comedic side as well, as she jokes around with her brother due to his formality, but has great respect for him and stands by his side once he becomes king. She also shows sarcastic tendencies.

Shuri is shown to be quite open-minded and easily more social than her brother with non-Wakandese people, as shown by her interactions with Everett Ross, Bucky Barnes and Bruce Banner. However, she doesn't really take the customs and traditions of Wakanda seriously.

Biography[]

Background[]

Princess Shuri is the daughter of King T'Chaka and Queen Ramonda, sister to T'Challa, and a member of the Golden Tribe. Due to her genius-level intelligence and engineering skills, Shuri led the Wakandan Design Group, who made weapons and equipment from vibranium. Shuri would work on creating many advanced technology for Wakanda, notably the Wakandan Maglev Train.

She also worked on upgrading the Panther Habit, using it to absorb or release energy in battles. Despite the advancements, most tribes looked own about it, seeing it as scoffing Wakandan traditions. The most notable tribe was the Jabari, led by M'Baku, who would later challenge the Golden Tribe. In 2016, T'Chaka was killed in a terrorist attack orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, a former soldier who wanted revenge against the Avengers.

Black Panther[]

You'll never be a true King.
~ Shuri to Killmonger.

Shrui attended the return of her brother alongside Ramonda, with T'Challa returning with Nakia and Okoye. She also attended T'Challa's coronation, jokingly raising her hand to challenge him for the crown. The ceremony was interrupted by the Jabari Tribe, with M'Baku challenging T'Challa, and her brother winning the duel.

Before T'Challa's mission in South Korea, Shuri showed him the advances she made to the Panther Habit. She also showed T'Challa new designs, such as the sneakers, and gave him Kimoyo Beads so that she could assist the mission. Shuri proceeded to show the advancements of his suit, such as it being made from nanotechnology, and be put into a necklace.

Shuri assisted T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye in chasing down Ulysses Klaue in South Korea with her remote car. Despite Klaue destroying it with his prosthetic arm, Black Panther succeeded in apprehending the criminal. When the group returned to Shuri, she was tasked with healing Everett K. Ross, which she succeeding in doing so with their Vibranium technology.

Shuri witnessed the arrival of Erik Killmonger, a Black Ops operative who killed Klaue and challenged T'Challa for the crown. He was revealed to be the son of N'Jobu, Shuri and T'Challa's uncle, and wants revenge for his death at the hands of T'Chaka. She tearfully witnessed the death of Zuri and the defeat and apparent death of T'Challa, and was forced into exile. Once reuniting with T'Challa with the aid of Nakia and the Jabari Tribe, the group decided to take down Killmonger.

Shuri participated in the fight against Killmonger with the help of the Dora Milaje and the Jabari Tribe. T'Challa succeeded in defeating Killmonger with the aid of Shuri activating the train system, causing their Panther Habit's to shut down. She was then tasked with helping build a Wakandan International Outreach Centre in California, as T'Challa would reveal Wakanda to the world.

When T'Challa returned to Wakanda after the Avengers' clash, Shuri was tasked with helping Steve Rogers' friend, Bucky Barnes. Shuri used an algorithm to "rest" Barnes' programming from HYDRA, destroying every code word that would activate him. In addition, she explained to T'Challa that she could use the algorithm to improve Wakandan technology through artificial intelligence, even better than Ultron.

Avengers: Infinity War[]

When Wakanda was warned of Thanos' invasion for the Mind Stone, going on a crusade to collect the Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe. When Bruce Banner believed that Vison could survive if the stone was extracted from his head, Steve Rogers decided that Shuri could do so. While the Avengers and the Wankandan military fought off Thanos' army, Shuri was attempting to take out the stone, but was attacked by Corvus Glaive when Scarlet Witch decided to aid her allies in the battle.

Despite attacking Glaive with her gauntlets, she was quickly incapacitated, and failed to extract the stone from Vision's head. After collecting the Time Stone from Doctor Strange on Titan, Thanos came to Wakanda, and succeeded in collecting the Mind Stone by killing the Vision. He wiped out half of the universe, starting the decimation, and Shuri was part of the many who were turned to dust (alongside her brother, T'Challa).

Avengers: Endgame[]

Along with every one who were erased, she was revived along with her brother, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff, and Groot by Bruce Banner with a makeshift infinity gauntlet. Upon her return, she aided her brother, the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and their allies in fighting Thanos and getting the stones back to their times. She was last seen at Tony Stark's funeral, honoring his sacrifice to save the world from the Mad Titan.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever[]

Sometime after Thanos' defeat, T'Challa suddenly suffers from a mysterious illness which Shuri believes can still be cured by the heart-shaped herb. She attempts to synthetically recreate the herb after it was previously destroyed by Killmonger, but fails as T'Challa dies peacefully, leaving Shuri heartbroken.

In 2025, while still grieving her brother's death, Shuri had to face a aquatic mutant named Namor and his underwater army called the Talokanil, who wanted to wage war on the surface world and protect their home. As Shuri was trying to protect a student named Riri Williams, Namor proposed her a military alliance, but in the end, the Talokanil declared a massive war on Wakanda, eventually leading to Namor killing Ramonda. Devastated, Shuri yearned for vengeance and managed to synthesize a heart-shaped herb, taking on the mantle of Black Panther. Shuri led the Wakandan army in the final battle against Namor and his army, during which she managed to defeat Namor, but decided to spare his life instead of killing him to avenge her mother's death. As the war ended, Shuri resolved to leave Wakanda, allowing M'Baku to challenge for the throne. She stayed in Haiti, where she is introduced to her nephew T'Challa II by Nakia.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

Heart-Shaped Herb Enhancement: After having consumed an exact copy of the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri's physical attributes have been greatly enhanced to levels comparable to a super-soldier. The herb grants her superhuman strength, mobility, stamina, endurance, and instincts, just like her brother T'Challa.

  • Superhuman Strength: After having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri's strength is tremendously enhanced like her brother's, enabling her to send a mannequin against a wall with a single punch in her first display of strength when she whacked it out of anger, exchange powerful blows against Namor and throw him into the air and back on the ground with a single hand. She is also much stronger than M'Baku, who tested her with an arm wrestle.
  • Superhuman Durability: Due to having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri is much more durable than a normal human being. She can withstand extreme blunt force trauma, even though she is helped by wearing her Black Panther suit. She can also withstand the explosion of an aircraft that had been compromised by Namor, a subsequent fall to the ground and many punches from Namor that he hit her with. It even took being impaled by Namor's spear to significantly wound her.
  • Superhuman Speed: Due to having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri can run and move at speeds beyond the peak of human potential, allowing her to move across the side of the Sea Leopard to fight Talokanil warriors that attempted to board the ship during her first battle as the new Black Panther. During her fight with Namor when she first engages him, she sprinted and quickly ran towards him, and during the rest of their final battle.
  • Superhuman Agility: Due to having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri is far greater than that of Olympic athletes. Like her brother, she can coordinate her body with perfect balance, equilibrium, flexibility, and dexterity. Her movements, like T'Challa, are akin to an actual panther, being capable of crawl and climb through walls and leap great distances with accuracy. She is able to jump on the sides of the Sea Leopard, dodging and attacking Talokanil warriors until the time came to confront Namor. She even accurately jumped towards the Royal Talon Fighter, where Namor had already been trapped.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: After consuming the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri's reflexes start to increase, enabling her to effectively hit and evade blows from her enemies while fighting them. She also managed to evade some of Namor's blows and could accurately go for one of his ankle wings, slicing it with her claws.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Due to having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri's musculature is considerably more efficient than that of normal humans. As a result, her muscles produce practically no fatigue toxins during physical activity compared to those of humans. Her virtually inexhaustible stamina enables her to exert herself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all, allowing her to fight against Talokanil warriors and Namor until she is injured by being impaled by his spear.
  • Accelerated Healing Factor: Due to having consumed the Heart-Shaped Herb, Shuri can heal and regenerate from any injuries, even those that would normally kill humans. She survived and rapidly recovered from being impaled by Namor's spear and, although with an open wound, she was still able to stand on her feet.

Abilities[]

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Shuri is a highly intelligent individual as she is one of the most intelligent individuals on Earth.
  • Master Scientist: Shuri is known to be an excellent scientist and is an expert in the fields of science, chemistry, physics, medicine, electronics, mechanics, technology and several other subjects.
  • Master Engineer: Shuri is an excellent engineer and is constantly making improvements to Wakanda's technology, such as weaponry, defenses, communications and transportation respectively. She even made several other upgrades to the traditional Black Panther suit, allowing nanites that the new suit is comprised of to materialize around the wearer as well as to absorb kinetic energy.
  • Bilingual: Shuri's native tongue is Xhosa and she can speak fluent English, albeit with a thick Wakandan accent.
