Hero Overview

I don't break rules, I bend them - a lot.

Sideswipe is a brave but often rash warrior. He is almost as skilled as his twin brother Sunstreaker in combat, but is less ruthless. Sideswipe transformed into a red Lamborghini Countach, while his brother, Sunstreaker, transformed into a yellow Lamborghini Countach. Because of his jetpack, Sideswipe was one of few G1 Autobots with the ability to fly. Throughout Seasons 1 and 2 of the cartoon, Sideswipe was voiced by voice actor, Michael Bell.

History[]

Cartoon[]

Sideswipe was part of the initial crew of Autobots aboard the Ark when it crash-landed on Earth four million years ago. He awakened along with his fellow Transformers in 1984, with both he and his brother being reformatted into Lamborghini sports cars. Sideswipe loaned Optimus Prime the use of his rocket pack when the Decepticons nearly escaped from Earth with a starship full of energon.

Sideswipe and Sunstreaker often operated together. When antimatter-fueled Decepticons attacked the Ark on one occasion in the episode "Roll for It", Sideswipe and Sunstreaker took to the air to battle with the incoming seeker jets, in a rambunctious, if ultimately ineffective, display of "jet judo."

When investigating tremors that were shaking the Autobot base, Ironhide's scanner found some interesting objects inside a rock wall. Sideswipe, using his piston-like arms, helped Brawn removed the rock wall and found a cave full of dinosaur bones, the discovery of which would lead to the development of the Dinobots.

Sideswipe disguised as the Stunticon Breakdown. Towards the end of 1985, Sideswipe was a semi-regular in the series, and is among the team of five Autobots who disguised themselves as the Stunticons. Penetrating the Decepticons' camp, the Autobots ran into trouble when the real Stunticons arrived, trying to prove their identities by forming Menasor. With a combination of Windcharger's magnetic powers and Hound's hologram-creating ability, the Autobots were able to appear as Menasor too, but the Deception was soon revealed, though they were still able to thwart the Decepticons' plans.

Early battles on Earth[]

As seen in The Transformers, Sideswipe and his brother Sunstreaker were part of the original crew of the Ark. When the Decepticons attacked the ship, it crashed on Earth, and Sideswipe, along with the rest of the combatants, lay dormant for 4 million years. When the volcano that housed the Ark erupted, the Ark's internal mechanisms revived both Autobot and Decepticons, including Sideswipe.

When the Autobots went to rescue Bumblebee from Sparkplug Witwicky's garage, they were attacked by Decepticons. Against his brother's better judgment, Sideswipe employed his rocket pack to take the fight right to the Decepticon jets. The 'Cons were driven off, but without a source of fuel to recharge on, several Autobots, including Sideswipe, were left virtually empty after the battle. He and Hound had to ride back in Optimus's trailer back to the Ark.

In The Enemy Within, Sideswipe was attacked by Brawn after his mind had been altered after being electrocuted. As Sideswipe was manhanded by his addled comrade, he was confused at why he was being attacked. Sideswipe and the Autobots tracked Brawn down as he rampaged through a nearby town, and managed to return him to normal with another electrical shock. Unfortunately, they had no proof that he was his old self, and Brawn was put through trial by combat against Starscream to prove his loyalty. Sideswipe was depressed when he thought that the duel had ended with Brawn's demise, but was happy to see him alive, his death having been a ruse orchestrated by Mirage and Optimus. Despite being unable to go on missions, in Raiders of the Last Ark, Sideswipe fended off the Decepticons when they attacked the Ark. Sideswipe fended off Rumble with his pile drivers. In Decepticon Dam-Busters, he helped protect Sherman Dam from the Decepticons, although the Autobots could not save it. Sideswipe and his teammates raced ahead of the resulting flood in order to evacuate a nearby town before the waters reached it. In his vehicle mode, Sideswipe transported many humans to safety, having a friendly race against Jazz.

With Sideswipe having sustained damage during the battles and all the Autobots low on fuel, Optimus Prime chose to donate all their fuel reserves to keeping five Autobots at full strength to fight off a Decepticon attack. As a result, Sideswipe was left inactive.

Later adventures[]

Sideswipe was finally brought back on line by Ratchet. He was mentioned (but not seen) as being among the Autobots who accompanied Ironhide in destroying the transmitter the Decepticons were using to contact Cybertron. He was later part of the convoy of Autobots put together by acting leader Prowl to end the Decepticons' control of the Blackrock Aerospace facility. They appeared to recover the head of Optimus Prime, which had been held prisoner by Shockwave, but it turned out to be a dummy who attacked the Autobots along with a squad of Decepticons. They were eventually saved by the real Optimus Prime.

Sideswipe was among the Autobots who defended the Ark against Swoop, who was being controlled by the human scientist Professor Morris. This led to the discovery that the Dinobots had gone feral as a result of their intelligence circuits being eroded by a swamp. Sideswipe led Bluestreak and Huffer in searching for Grimlock, but the Decepticons had arranged for him to battle Sludge. Sideswipe sent out a call for reinforcements but his shuttle was destroyed by the two battling Dinobots, leaving him badly damaged.

Aside from a few anomalous appearances notably being among the Autobots listening to Optimus Prime's speech at the end of Target: 2006, Sideswipe would remain offline until after Grimlock initiated a massive repair programme. He was among the Autobots who massed on the moon to witness the fight between Grimlock and Blaster and took part in the subsequent battle with Ratbat's Decepticons. During the Underbase Saga, he and several other Autobots answered a distress call from Buster Witwicky only to be ambushed by the combined forces of two Decepticon factions. Sideswipe was likely left offline by the battle.

Sideswipe was one of the many Autobots to arrive to Earth on Sky Lynx to Tokyo-03 in the middle of an Angel attack where Starscream's Ghost would possess the Angel and become Angel-Scream. When Optimus Prime scans Evangelion Unit-01 he was worried if there any effects but only to reassure he was fine. Sidewipe would assist in the battle against Angel-Scream where in the aftermath talks to some NERV Agents.
