Hero Overview

It's no use!
~ Silver's ironic line from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
This world was devastated before I was born. A harsh, bleak place, where we live in eternal darkness. Life is a struggle, and people live without hope! How did this happen?! No one will answer me directly, but they always point... to the Flames.
~ Silver the Hedgehog about his origins, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Silver the Hedgehog is a major character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise.

He is a 14-year-old hedgehog who hails from 200 years in the future. He is Blaze the Cat's best friend. His main role in the games is to protect the future by changing the problems in the past with the help from his psychokinesis, which are psychic powers. He apparently has the ability to time-travel, though this is implied to be done with the assistance of future technology.

Silver is a kindhearted and well-meaning individual, driven by a strong sense of justice to right the wrongs of the past to uphold peace, though he is somewhat naïve and immature. Despite the monumental tasks he may have on hand, he is an optimist and will do whatever is required to protect the world.

He is voiced by Pete Capella, Quinton Flynn, and currently Bryce Papenbrook in the English version, and by Daisuke Ono in the Japanese version.

Portrayals[]

In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Daisuke Ono, who also voices Nobuyuki Sanada from Samurai Warriors, Shunsuke Otosaka from Charlotte and Jotaro Kujo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In the English version, he was voiced by Pete Capella between 2006 and 2010, Quinton Flynn between 2010 and 2017 (who also voiced Timon from Timon & Pumbaa, Raiden from Metal Gear, Iruka from Naruto, and Lea/Axel in the Kingdom Hearts), and is currently voiced by Bryce Papenbrook since 2019, who also the voice of Cat Noir and Argos from Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, Makoto Naegi in the Danganronpa series, Inosuke Hashibira in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Guan Ping in the Dynasty Warriors series, Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist, Masaomi Kida in Durarara, Makoto Naegi and Nagito Komaeda in Danganronpa, Meliodas in The Seven Deadly Sins, Kazuto Kirigaya in Sword Art Online, Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, Zidane Tribal in Final Fantasy IX, Shirou Emiya in Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Rokuro Enmado in Twin Star Exorcists, Lance in Glitter Force Doki Doki, Kagura Karatachi in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, and Staz Charlie Blood in Blood Lad. In Sonic 2006, his singing voice was heard in his story's ending song "Dreams of an Absolution" by Bentley Jones (credited as Lee Brotherton).

Appearance[]

Silver, per his name, is a hedgehog with silver or gray fur, white fur as a collar around his neck, his hands sport gloves with gold-banded wrists with blue, glowing lines that help focus his psychokinetic powers when using them to fly, attack, or defend. His boots are aqua blue on the toes, black on the side, and white on the middle with red tongues with gold-banded ankles that also sport the blue, glowing lines for focusing his psychokinesis. He also sports yellow eyes.

Personality[]

Silver is a polite hedgehog with a strong sense of justice, who can be very serious changing his future or when the future is at stake with relentless determination. Silver opposes those who make others suffer and will try to help out in any way he can. Silver does care about his friends, like when Blaze offered to sacrifice herself to seal Iblis away, Silver instead, wanted a favorable alternative to defeat the monster for good. Silver is shown to be naive (which has been elaborated on by Blaze several times,) he can be too trusting, to the point that he never contemplated on the fact that he could be lied to by Mephiles (who tricks Silver into believing Sonic is the Iblis Trigger, which he eventually found out after traveling with Shadow to see what happened 10 years ago.)

He does have a nasty side to him at times, like when someone gets in his way, or when someone's not being very helpful. Silver has shown to be very rude and short-tempered at times, as seen in Sonic Rivals and its sequel. He does have a apologetic side to him, such as in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) by saving and teaming up with Sonic where they were trying to save Elise, despite their initial encounter, but Silver reconciles with Sonic by telling him that it was a misunderstanding and asks Sonic if he could help save Elise, and after Sonic forgives Silver, the two hedgehogs worked together.

Silver also has a love for plants, and thus created a garden of his own in the Emeraldville Ruins, explaining that in his future before the Zombot apocalypse, the vegetation wasn't all that lush. Also, during his visits to the Sonic era, he often marvels at the beauty of nature that is almost beyond his understanding of him.

Silver possesses a competitive side to him and is rather cocky, often giving a smug look when he's in the lead. It's more so seen in the latter two Sonic Riders games. In Sonic (2006) he gives a snide remark when fighting enemies.

All in all, he's a very friendly and likable person, whenever he's not busy trying to save his future.

History[]

Early Years[]

Silver was originally from the future, Silver experienced firsthand the effects of Dr. Eggman's world conquest during Sonic's time, which resulted in all of his time living in fear and suffocating from polluted air. Silver then went back in time to stop Eggman from taking over the world and joined Sonic's Resistance.

Powers and Abilities[]

Silver's main power is his psychokinesis, the ability to manipulate the environment around him with the power of his mind. Whenever using his psychokinesis, Silver and the targets he affects get surrounded in a cyan aura. With it, Silver can telekinetically lift, throw, hold and move objects (or people) easily, and even immobilize enemies. With enough focus, he can even catch multiple targets at once. He can also form constructs out of psychokinetic energies, like lassos and force-fields for protection and encasing targets. Silver can also use his psychokinesis on himself, thereby allowing him to hover and fly.

Additionally, Silver mentions being able to use Chaos Control to warp targets, though he notes that Shadow is more skilled with the ability than him.

Comics[]

Archie[]

Pre-Super Genesis Wave[]

Silver comes from his devastated future to explain that it was caused by one of the Freedom Fighters having apparently turned traitor. When he believes Sally to be responsible after learning of her Roboticization into Mecha Sally, he initially causes Sonic and Amy to become furious with him over his intent to stop her to prevent his future from being destroyed, however, learning that Sally is doing so against her will as Mecha Sally, Silver reconsiders his choice and tries to help, managing to sneak up on her as she was about to kill Sonic and Amy and incapacitates her. Unfortunately, before he, Sonic, Amy, or any of the Freedom Fighters can finally take Sally back to possibly be de-Roboticized, they are caught up in the second Genesis Wave triggered by Eggman and Doctor Wily to rewrite their realities to their liking using the Super Genesis Wave.

Silver ends up being roboticized and turned into a Robot Master himself, dubbed "Silver Man", but is later returned to flesh and blood by Sonic and Mega Man. Unfortunately, Eggman and Wily launch the Super Genesis Wave, and when Super Sonic and Mega Man in his own Super form try to reverse the effects via Chaos Control, while Mega Man succeeds in saving his world and returning it to normal, a spiteful Eggman interrupts Super Sonic, disrupting the effects of Chaos Control and the Super Genesis Wave, creating an irreversible new timeline for the Prime Zone as the multiverse collapses and reboots from the damage, causing the world everyone remembers to be lost forever due to the permanent change to the timeline.

Relationships[]

Blaze the Cat[]

Silver and Blaze are best friends.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Shadow is Silver's rival and friend.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Silver and Sonic met during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). The two were enemies at first because Silver had traveled through and was intending to kill Sonic believing that he is responsible for destroying his world by releasing the Iblis Trigger into the world and was bent on saving the future. But Silver befriended Sonic when he discovered that Sonic was not the Iblis Trigger and that Mephiles the Dark had lied to him. The two worked together to save Princess Elise and when Sonic was killed by Mephiles, Afterwards Silver teamed up with Sonic and Shadow to defeat Mephiles. They don't actually meet until Sonic Rivals, where Silver has traveled to the past to bring Eggman Nega back to the future, but Silver seems to be more competitive to Sonic as they raced each other to see who would get to Eggman Nega first but later they teamed up with each other at the end to defeat Eggman Nega and also in Sonic Rivals 2 to defeat the Ifrit. It appears that Sonic and Silver don't remember each other from their past adventure since the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) were erased.

Silver seems to have a bit of a disliking towards Sonic mostly because he thinks that he is immature and irresponsible, similar to Sonic and Knuckles' rivalry. Silver's attitude tends to annoy Sonic at times as well as seen in Sonic Rivals, when he says: "Yo, Silver, you've got an attitude.". But they will work together and lay aside their differences whenever the time is right. An example is in Sonic Colors after Silver challenges Sonic to a mission, he asks if he needs any help. In Sonic Generations, Silver is the only rival who wants a friendly fight. He also appeared at the Center of Time after Sonic was knocked out by the Time Eater, Silver says to Sonic: "I know you can do this, Sonic!". He also joins the Resistance in Sonic Forces to take down the Eggman Empire after it conquered 99% of the world. Silver is part of the final battle at the Eggman Empire Fortress, where the Resistance emerges triumphant and begins the long process of rebuilding the world following the War to Take Back the Planet.

Amy Rose[]

Amy is a good friend with Silver. Since the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) have been erased, they met in a different way, though it is unknown. But let's say, Amy met with Silver after Sonic saved her in Sonic Rivals.

Espio the Chameleon[]

The two first met each other in Sonic Rivals 2. Before they met, Espio was given an assignment by Vector the Crocodile to find out evidence that Silver was behind the kidnapping of several Chao. At first, Espio treated Silver like an enemy, but as he learned that Silver was working to save the world, he decided to follow his instincts and help him with his mission. During their adventure, the two have built a good relationship as Espio proved his trustworthiness and helped Silver on many occasions. After finishing their mission, the two became best friends and developed a brother-like relationship, and Silver frequently travels to past to visit his best friend Espio, along with his other friends.

Mephiles the Dark[]

Mephiles tricked Silver into thinking Sonic is the Iblis Trigger, but he later realized the truth, and stopped believing on him.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

Tails and Silver are friends.

Eggman Nega[]

Eggman Nega is Silver's archenemy.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Silver and Knuckles have a small rivalry with each other. Normally, they don't pay much attention to each other, though they had heated battles with one another occasionally.

When they first met during the Onyx Island incident, they were initially hostile to each other due to Silver being uncommunicative, but they later put aside their differences and willingly teamed up together. During the Ifrit incident, they were briefly cordial at first until Silver took offense at Knuckles mocking him for thinking saving the Chao could save the world. During the Phantom Ruby incident, Knuckles was the first person Silver warned about Eggman's attack, which led to the War to Take Back the Planet. Silver seems to be one of Knuckles' most trusted lieutenants and they work well together.

Rouge the Bat[]

Silver and Rouge have a small rivalry with each other. Normally, they don't pay much attention to each other, though they had heated battles with one another occasionally. Despite this, they are very good friends and allies.

Infinite[]

Because of the initial belief that Infinite killed Sonic, Silver harbors a deep grudge against Infinite. When Silver confronts him in Mystic Jungle, after Infinite intends to kill Silver to further distill fear and despair in the Resistance, Silver attempts to fight back, unknowingly causing Infinite to drop one of the Phantom Ruby prototypes he was going to destroy, thereby ensuring the Resistance's ultimate victory in the war, and saving his own future in the process. Though he is overpowered, Sonic rescues him from Infinite's final strike, but both hedgehogs have to recover, and Silver mainly remains with the Resistance at their HQ until the final assault on the Eggman Empire Fortress to take out Infinite and the Phantom Ruby once and for all.

Quotes[]

Don't you DARE turn your back on me!
~ Silver's Lion King Reference.
I'm going to change the future with my own hands!
~ Silver in Sonic Rivals 2.
The root of all our problems... I will defeat you, Solaris!
~ Super Silver.
Eggman's forces have everyone terrified. If we want the people to rally, we have to show them that strength doesn't just come from numbers.
~ Silver rallying the Resistance in Sonic Forces

Trivia[]

  • At first it seems that Silver can levitate while bathed in his Psychic powers, but in recent games, he can levitate without it.
  • Unlike Shadow and Metal Sonic (who both have a score to settle) from Sonic Generations, Silver is the only rival boss to fight against Sonic just for the fun of it.
  • The speed chip upgrade for Silver was not included in the final version of the game, which was designed to make Silver run faster, though the description appeared on the Sonic (2006) game guide.
  • Silver is perhaps the most frustrating boss to fight in Sonic '06 (or even in the whole franchise) mainly because his psychokinesis easily grabs Sonic/Shadow, replying "IT'S NO USE....TAKE THIS," which is considered by many to be very annoying(and become a famous meme for silver). He usually throws players towards the corner, which he later follows or stands in front of the player at the corner (especially if the player doesn't recover in time, much to their bad luck) and kills them after saying his second line "IT'S NO USE....THIS WILL END IT" when the player has no rings. Though in Sonic Generations designed the fight to be extremely favorable.
  • Unlike other hedgehog characters (i.e. Sonic, Shadow, and Amy) that are Speed-types, Silver is a Fly-type character.
  • Silver was originally intended to be playable in the first Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games game, but was removed for unknown reasons.
  • Silver is the first character to use profanity in the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comic series. In Sonic the Hedgehog #8, Silver exclaimed "Oh. crap!" upon learning about Neo Metal Sonic's plan.
  • Despite the character's mixed reception, he became a fan favorite, with some wanting an official video game based off of him.
  • Silver's phrase "IT'S NO USE" is ironic due to his nature as an optimist.
