“ | Oh, here we go. I hate how everyone thinks you can solve any problem with 'magic'. There are limits. This isn't some bedtime story. This is the real world. | „ |
~ Simon speaking his mind about the reality |
Simon Aumar is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Doric) of the 2023 fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. He is a half-elf sorcerer. Though he is the descendant of a famous wizard, Simon's self-esteem issues get in the way of his magic. Likewise, he is a fellow adventurer of Edgin Darvis, Holga Kilgore, Doric, and Xenk Yendar.
He was portrayed by Justice Smith, who also played Franklin Webb in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion, Tim Goodman in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and Marc Wydell in Ron's Gone Wrong.
Personality[]
Simon has a very low self-esteem, as well as lacks in confidence in his abilities. He cares about other people's opinions about his skills and so he tends to make self-deprecating remarks, reasoning it was better to tear himself down before others had the chance. Nevertheless, he performs well under pressure.
Physical Appearance[]
Simon is slender and of average height. Being a half-elf, he has somewhat pointed ears and appears boyish and youthful despite his age.
He wears a yellow shirt, purple vest, and brown cape.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Half-Elf Physiology: Simon is a Half-Elf and Half-Human Sorcerer. This gives him access to a lot of magical abilities due to his mystical heritage and ancestors.
- Wild Magic: Despite having a powerful family of sorcerers, Simon isn't that good with his magic which causes it to lash out and it's a force that he could not control but had to learn to master in order to tap into his true potential. As a result, his spells would miscast, fizzle or explode, produce entirely different effects to what he intended, or just not work at all until he was most desperate or threatened.
- Spell Casting: Simon's primary way of practicing magic was through incantation. Although some of his spells failed the ones that didn't were powerful and effective.
- Cone of Cold: The first spell we see Simon cast is Cone of Cold. He does this to aid their escape from the pursuers, who are all on horseback. It's a 5th-level evocation spell.
- Pyrokinesis: He was able to generate a flame at the tip of his finger in front of a room of people and in the final battle he conjures flames to try and take down Sofina's shield spell.
- Smell Manipulation: Simon cast a smell summoning spell to conjure a wiff of freshly cut grass for his audience which they didn't like very much.
- Blur: Simon instead uses Blur as a magic trick to distract an entire room of people he planned on grifting. Blur, like Invisibility, is a 2nd-level illusion spell.
- Magnetism: While Simon performs silly tricks for his audience, he is actually using the 1st-level transmutation spell Magnetism to steal everyone's jewelry.
- Reverse Gravity: The first real clue that Simon is actually a competent sorcerer, Reverse Gravity is a 7th-level transmutation spell, which is also one of the first Dungeons and Dragons spells that Simon unleashes. On the other hand, Simon actually uses Reverse Gravity by mistake while attempting to get away from his irate audience, as he later mentions that he meant to cast Shield.
- Jump and Feather Fall: While these are two separate spells, Simon uses them back-to-back to escape the audience and land safely on the roof and onto Holga's lap. Both Jump and Feather Fall are also 1st-level transmutation spells.
- Speak with the Dead: A 3rd-level necromancy spell typically accessible only to bards and clerics, the sorcerer Simon uses a magical token to cast Speak With Dead. The party uses Speak With Dead to get information from Holga's ancestors at an ancient graveyard, which leads them to find out that the Helm of Disjunction is in the possession of the paladin Xenk Yendar.
- Arcane Gate: In the Underdark, Simon finds out that Holga has been carrying around a Hither Tither staff, which Simon uses to cast the 6th-level conjuration spell Arcane Gate. The party uses it to break into Castle Never and when they distribute Forge's gold to the people of Neverwinter with a portal through Forge's blimp.
- Major Image: The extremely disturbing hologram of Edgin playing his lute was courtesy of a 3rd-level illusion spell called Major Image, which was cast by Simon. Major Image allows for the creation of a naturally-moving image of a creature known to the caster, which in this case is Edgin.
- Dispel Magic: Though only a 3rd-level abjuration spell, Dispel Magic can nullify and end higher level spells like Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum as seen when Simon dispels the said arcane seal using the Helm of Disjunction.
- Wall of Force: What prevents the Meteor Swarm from wiping out the party is a 5th-level evocation spell called Wall of Force and is cast by Simon.
- Shield: Simon casts the 1st-level abjuration spell Shield during the final fight between the party and Sofina.
- Maximilian's Earthen Grasp: Simon casts this spell in order to counter Sofina's own giant, magical hand in their arcane duel during the climax.
- Magic Missile: The classic Magic Missile is a 1st-level evocation spell and was used by Simon against Sofina.
- Chain Lightning: During the final battle with Sofina, Simon performs a 6th-level evocation spell which shocks and nearly electrocutes Sofina, had she not put a shield up.
- Spell Casting: Simon's primary way of practicing magic was through incantation. Although some of his spells failed the ones that didn't were powerful and effective.
