Heroine Overview

You are pathetic and weak!
~ Sindel's Mortal Kombat (2011) Battle Cry.
Come forward if you dare!! I will finish what the Lin Kuei could not.
~ Sindel ready to finish off the earthrealm warriors.

Sindel (also known as Queen Sindel) is a supporting character in the Mortal Kombat series. She is the mother of Kitana, the former queen of Edenia, and in the Midway timeline and New Era, she was on the side of good, but in the WARNER/NRS 2nd timeline, she was on the side of evil.

Her voice was provided by Lani Minella in Mortal Kombat (2011) (who also provided the voice of Sheeva from the same game), Kelly Hu in Mortal Kombat X (who also provided the voices Li Mei from Mortal Kombat 1, Lady Shiva from both Batman: Soul of the Dragon and Batman: Arkham Origins, and Karai from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)), and Mara Junot in Mortal Kombat 11 (who also provided the voice of Lisa Minci from Genshin Impact).

History[]

Pre-Mortal Kombat[]

Sindel is the queen of Edenia and the wife of King Jerrod who while both raised Kitana who is their daughter. Sindel ruled her peaceful world for awhile, however, soon Shao Kahn invaded Edenia and killed her husband and took Sindel as his queen. Jerrod thinks that Sindel agrees in order to protect her daughter Kitana when in reality she has been lying to him all along.

Midway timeline[]

Mortal Kombat 3[]

MK3-14 Sindel-PR1 (1)

Sindel in Mortal Kombat 3.

After Shao Kahn made Sindel his queen they both overtook outworld and Sindel kills herself in order to prevent Kahn from merging the realms. However, Sindel is revived and turned evil; With Sindel alive she and Kahn can invade earthrealm. Nonetheless, Earthrealm is successful in defeating Kahn and Kitana successfully converts her mother to being good and reliving her past self. Sindel then turns against Kahn and vows he will pay for his crimes.

Mortal Kombat 4/Gold[]

While everything was going smoothly everything was fine until Tanya betrayed the Edenian race in favor of corruption. Tanya uses her Neatherrealm fleet to invade her world along with her master and former elder god Shinnok.

Sindel unfortunately gets captured and held in a dungeon, her daughter Kitana escaped and freed her after Shinnok's forces were defeated. Angered and determined, Sindel, made a plan for Kitana to ally them with Shokan armies and they can all overthrow Shao Kahn for good. While they do this Sindel will restore Edenia to what it was before and help her Earthrealm warriors as well.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance/Deception[]

Sindel and Kitana Embrace in MK Deception.

Alas, her restoration would have to wait since the new Deadly Alliance formed by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, which brought disadvantages to Sindel and her friends who were mostly killed in battle and revived by Onaga, with them under his control. Sadly Edenia soon fell to Onaga and Kitana was brainwashed by him; Sindel remained trapped in a dungeon unable to help her daughter and the rest of her caring allies. However there was an ace in the hole as Jade the expert assassin and friend of Kitana freed Sindel and made Kitana sane again. They all embrace and escape Outworld.

Sindel gathers everyone and joined the Forces of Light from all realms as they all prepare for the Battle of Armageddon, however, like everyone else Sindel dies in this battle. in her non canon ending, Sindel was able to gain Blaze's power, and used to revive Jerrod, and together with Kitana formed a triad to protect the realms from tyranny.

NRS timeline[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Sindel ready to finish off Earthrealm warriors

"Come Forward if you dare" Sindel facing Earthrealm warriors.

Sindel, is not shown until more then the first half of the story, Although she is seen in Raiden's visions and mentioned. Kitana, knowing her mother is dead, she believed Shao Kahn was her real father. Around the time Earthrealm was winning against Shao Kahn and his forces, Kitana joined them seeing them more as a Family then her Father ever could; Quan Chi had a plan to ressurrect the formerly dead queen Sindel, in hopes of them invading Earthrealm more easily.

Thus, she was revived and serving Shao Kahn noblely, Shao Kahn kills Shang Tsung and gives Sindel his essence making Her physical strength and magic increase. After the Lin Kuai are defeated Sindel appears letting out a high screech and says "COME FORWARD if you dare i WILL FINISH WHAT THE Lin kuai could not!!", she ultimately slays most of the earthrealm warriors and brutally beats her own daughter Kitana.

Sindel sucking out Kitana's soul

Sindel sucking out Kitana's soul.

Critically injured and beaten, Kitana pleads with her mother and tries to convince her that what she is doing isn't right. Sindel ignores Kitana and starts taking her soul, Nightwolf intervenes and manages to defeat Sindel at the cost of both their lives. Later on, Sindel and along with the people she killed are all apart of Quan Chi's revenents now.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

She first acts as an antagonist as Revenant and then becomes an ally after being resurrected by Fujin and Shang Tsung before proving to actually be on Shao Kahn's side and she has revealed her true self, all this time she was no longer controlled, she has been truly evil all along.

New Era[]

Mortal Kombat 1[]

In the New Era created by Fire God Liu Kang, Sindel is once again a noble and just ruler, serving as the Empress of Outworld with Kitana and Mileena as her twin daughters. Her eldest daughter, Mileena was infected by the disease called the "Tarkat" causing Sindel to temporarily pass on the heirloom to Kitana until Mileena is fully cured.

Sindel would then die fighting her second timeline counterpart while in pursuit of Titan Shang Tsung. Her soul, alongside Jerrod's, would later rest within Ermac's body.

Appearance[]

Sindel has a very magentic look and favors a more dark look with purple lipstick and having no pupils in her eyes. Over the series of games she wears revealing costumes that are color of purple.

Her clothes are fitted like a corset cut-down to her cleavage. In Mortal Kombat (2011) her corset is more revealing and it splits near her midriff. Sindel has a white stream of long hair while the rest is black.

Personality[]

During the time of her being queen in Edenia, Sindel was noble, respectful, and caring to her people; Sindel was very compassionate to the earthrealm warriors as well. She even shows sign of selflessness as she sacrifices her ruling in order to protect her daughter Kitana, from Shao Kahn. However, after Sindel revealed her true self and joined Shao Kahn she became heartless towards anyone who opposed his rulings even her own daughter. After successfully regaining her sanity in the original timeline, Sindel pretended that she has retained her kindness. In the alternate timeline, Sindel was no longer corrupted that even Kitana couldn't reason with her.

Throughout the Mortal Kombat series even in the alternate timeline in her non-canon Mortal Kombat (2011) ending, Sindel pretends that her main goal is to take back everything that Shao Kahn took from her. She also pretends to wish to bring peace and order to all the realms with Edenia being at the center. Sindel wants all the realms united not by merging them or by fear but by having them all working together.

Sindel in the original timeline and new timeline including her revenant form and non-revenant form wishes to have her family reunited. No matter what from or timeline Sindel wants to have Shao Kahn always by her side, she pretends to want her daughter Kitana and her ex-husband Jerrod always by her side. Non-revenant Sindel freed from Shao Kahn's control pretends to want Edenia to rule everything with peace while revenant Sindel wishes to have the Netherrealm rule everything with force and fear.

While Sindel is pretending to be a good noble leader with good intentions but she is also someone who seeks revenge and vengeance against Shao Kahn for everything she lost but she has always been having intentions into joining Shao. Sindel faked that she didn't like that Shao Kahn used her to get what he wanted which was her throne. Even though she lost her husband, home and her rule as leader Sindel chose to marry Shao Kahn and reluctantly gave up everything she had to keep her daughter safe. When Sindel lost her realm her rule and position of power to Shao Kahn she didn't like the feeling of being powerless. However her unwilling support to Shao Kahn allowed her to be leader of Outworld along side Shao Kahn.

Sindel doesn't like losing and giving up what she has this shown when she is lying about being angry at Shao Kahn after he conquered her home. This is also shown after Sindel marries Shao Kahn she does this so she can still be allowed to rule and have power even if it means she chose to marry a tyrant. Sindel while she was to stubborn to give up her throne and world to Shao Kahn with out a fight she was weak willed because she gave into Shao Kahn's rule after her loss and his victory over Edenia. While her husband Jerrod decided to go die fighting Sindel on the other hand chose to surrender to Shao Kahn rather then die like her husband.

While Sindel lied about loving her ex-husband Jerrod, her realm and her people she didn't decide to sacrifice herself to save them like her husband did. She was worried about her life, her safety along but was never worried about Kitana's life and safety but for Shao Kahn's life and safety. However she makes for this many years later by sacrificing herself to Earthrealm safe and to make sure that Shao Kahn doesn't conquer another realm.

Sindel is obsessed with keeping what she has and obsessed with reclaiming what belongs to her. Sindel is privileged just like many people who are born into royalty or who are married to a ruler. Although Shao Kahn was cruel father to Kitana Sindel still lied about making sure that her daughter lived a privileged life even if it living under the rule of a dictator.

Sindel is a strict ruler who looks menacing, she is strong, powerful and doesn't tolerate failure or weakness. Her strength, stubbornness and resistance that she showed while fighting against Shao Kahn during his invasion of Edenia is what made the empire fall in love with her. Everything that Sindel did for Kitana it was to pretend to make sure her daughter still cared on the future and legacy of Edenia to make their way of life survived.

Even if it meant making deals that her people or daughter didn't approve of there is no limit Sindel won't go to no sacrifice is to great for her to preserve what she cares about.

Powers and Abilities[]

Sindel, is very adept in physical combat engaging her enemies in hand-to-hand while also using some of her magic abilities. One of her magic powers is the ability to stretch her hair and use it to tie or intrap her opponents. Another and possibly her most renoun attack is her ability to use a sonic screech to stun her opponents or make their heads explode only if high frequency. She can use her screech to stun her enemies and proceed to beat the dazed enemy. After she gains all of Shang Tsung's powers her Strength and Magic is Doubled and she took out the Earthrealm Warriors without much trouble. Sindel can also levitate and can use this as an advantage in battle.

Trivia[]

  • Sindel fought Black Canary in the popular internet show DEATH BATTLE and lost.
  • In Mortal Kombat 11, Sindel's retconned backstory was met with disdain from the fanbase, due to the fact of the developers changing Sindel from a good figure manipulated and controlled by evil forces to being devious and cruel from the start.
  • She is the first character in the Mortal Kombat series who used the power of flight as both a move used in fights and as a win pose.
  • Sindel was one of several MK3 characters who were not officially named until the game neared completion. During production, she was nicknamed "Muchacha" and "The Bride" by the programmers.
    • The "The Bride" reference is actually rather telling of kung fu cinema's impact on the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole; one of the inspirations for Sindel's character is derived from The Bride with White Hair, a 1993 film from Hong Kong. The title character, Lian Nichang, is shown towards the later portion of the movie as transforming from black haired bride-to-be into a vicious witch with white hair.
  • Her "That was fun!" quote from her Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Friendship was used in the second Mortal Kombat movie.
  • She is the first character in the Mortal Kombat series who used the power of flight as both a move used in fights and as a win pose.
  • Sindel was one of the characters that were sent flying off the pyramid by Shang Tsung's "Flaming Skull" attack in the opening of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
  • In Mortal Kombat: Deception, upon entering her holding cell, Sindel tells Shujinko "You are a bit too old to be in Shao Kahn's military, are you not". This scene mimics the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in which Princess Leia tells Luke Skywalker, disguised as a stormtrooper, "Aren't you a little short for stormtrooper?".
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel can be seen briefly behind (possibly) one of Quan Chi's spawned skeletons, with a sword in her chest.
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), a broken statue of Sindel in the background of Jade's Desert arena.
  • Although she has a pair of completely white eyes, in her Mortal Kombat 3 ending, she actually has black irises.
    • In Mortal Kombat 11, this is also somewhat true when she is in her non-Revenant form.
  • In MK 2011, Sindel, along with Quan Chi, Jax Briggs, and Jade, is one of the few characters whose X-Ray Move does not make the opponent bleed.
    • In Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel's X-Ray Move is one of the few that does not damage the opponent's skull.
  • Sindel is one of the four characters whose special moves are affected by Headless Kombat, the others being Sonya Blade, Kabal and Kung Lao.
    • Sindel is also the most affected character. She loses four moves: High Fireball, Low Fireball, Hair Whip and Yell.
  • In every game except Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel's "Yell" move would cause the opponent to float in the air for a free hit. However, in Mortal Kombat (2011), it just stuns them.
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), if Sindel is transformed by a Babality in her primary costume, she will not lose any part of her hairline, while in her alternate costume, she will lose the most part of her hairline and only her ponytail will stay.
  • In MK 2011, if Sindel performs her "Mouthful" Fatality on a masked character or a Cyber Ninja, a sound will be heard when she inserts her hand in the enemy's mouth. This is possibly the sound of the mask or the armor being torn or broken.
  • In the opening of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Sindel is seen fighting Jarek.
  • Her "Mouthful" Fatality is the first one in which Sindel uses her "Star Scream" powers as a Fatality.
  • Sindel's regal hair brush relic in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is a reference to her Hair Whip powers that had been absent in the move list.
  • Sindel along with D'Vorah, Nitara and Cetrion are the only female characters to have the power of flight.
  • Sindel's Hara-Kiri in MK:D was listed as #8 in a ScrewAttack list of the Top 10 Worst Mortal Kombat Fatalities.
  • In a technical sense, Sindel is one of the few characters to be dead in both the original and current timelines.
  • In Injustice 2, she is mentioned by both Sub-Zero and Raiden who appear as guest characters. Both will compare her to Black Canary, while Raiden states that Starfire reminds him of the Edenian queen.
  • In the new timeline as of Mortal Kombat 11, Sindel’s past backgrounds and pre-Revenant alignment has been retconned.
    • Based on her intro dialogues in MK11, she is likely the only evil character who openly refuses to be Kronika's ally. This makes her a polar opposite to the present-day Jax, who only joined Kronika’s side reluctantly prior to finding out the truth from past Raiden.
  • In MK11, interactions with Skarlet reveal that Skarlet not only wishes to become Shao Kahn's second in command, but also his Queen.
  • In MK11, interactions with D'Vorah reveal Sindel considers Mileena her daughter, similar to Shao Kahn.
  • In MK11, interactions with Sub-Zero reveal more of his Cryomancer heritage, revealing that Sindel banished the Cryomancers from Edenia during her rule with King Jerrod.
    • This is considered to be a retcon, since Sub-Zero's bios from Mortal Kombat: Deception and another interaction with Sub-Zero and Skarlet reveal that Sub-Zero's ancestors were indeed from Outworld.
      • A possible theory about this interaction is that Sindel is lying to him as it is a part of her dubious nature, although this should be taken with a grain of salt.
  • In MK11, interactions with many of the male fighters reveal Sindel to be rather sexually interested in many of them, most notably Johnny Cage.
    • Sindel continues this when interacting with Sonya Blade, to where Sonya responds with annoyance and anger.
    • Ironically, the only male fighter she seems not interested in and rejects is Erron Black, who regularly hits on the female fighters.
  • In MK11, Sindel is one of the few characters whose uppercut is from the use of a weapon and not a literal uppercut, resulting in her being one of the few characters that does not literally uppercut the opponent's head off when performing the "Klassic" Brutality.
  • In MK11, Sindel, alongside her DLC counterparts Shang Tsung, Fujin and Nightwolf, have a role in the Aftermath Story Mode DLC. In the chapter dedicated to her, Sindel shares the lead role with Shao Kahn.
  • In MK11, the "Krushing Blow" version of Sindel's "Scream" can activate on airborne opponent, which in turn will defy the logic of how the attack connects, as the opponent will be in the air then teleport to the ground standing up straight, where their skull becomes destroyed due to the "Krushing Blow" despite being airborne.
