~ Slippy Toad. |
Slippy Toad (Japanese: スリッピー・トード Hepburn: Surippī Tōdo) is a major character in the Star Fox franchise. He is a member of the Star Fox team, and the team's mechanic. He first appeared in Star Fox for the SNES in 1993. He is an ally to Fox and is very comedic.
In Japanese version, he was voiced by Kyōkō Tongū in Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Star Fox Assault, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Smash 4, and by Kei Hayami for the rest of his appearances since Star Fox 64 3D.
In English version, Slippy was voiced by Lyssa Browne in Star Fox 64, its remake, SSB4 and Ultimate, Star Fox Zero, Star Fox Guard and Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Chris Seavor in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Star Fox Adventures and Mike McAuliffe in Star Fox Assault and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Personality and Traits[]
Slippy is generally good-natured and friendly towards most characters in the series, and it even extends to the more hostile Star Wolf Team. His father's mechanic and technological knowledge indicates that Slippy shares this passion with him and have made him a respected and valued ally, he is able to make fix machines and create new beneficial inventions, such as Slippy's creation of the Blue-Marine being made entirely from scrap metal and spare parts which was useful for underwater missions such as Aquas. Yet he is widely known for being a bit less than a competent pilot, having not yet completed his Cornerian Flight Academy training when Fox persuaded him to join the Star Fox Team. Having dropped out too soon resulted in Slippy's Arwing skills being strained, followed by his tendency of falling into danger, a flaw that Falco has picked on and chastised him for over the years.
Slippy also has a certain clumsy, goofball nature to him, such as throwing his wrench to turn off the jukebox, much to Fox's annoyance, asking Fox in a teasingly if he's not shy after he shyly responds to Krystal expressing her gratitude for saving her, and when he was running into his Arwing at the beginning of a rebellion on Fortuna, he comically falls down face-first when getting into his cockpit, in contrast to the others making an elegant leap. In Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins, it was Peppy who falls face-first while Slippy misses the cockpit completely
In the ending of Star Fox Adventures, Slippy is somewhat afraid of Andross, as noted when he says "Not as much as we were..." and was the most shocked and slightly horrified upon hearing about Andross's revival.
Although not nearly to the same extent of his wingmate Falco, he sometimes shows himself to have a sarcastic side, with two notable examples in Star Fox 64 being in Aquas and Venom when going against Star Wolf, the former when he "thanked" Peppy after the latter praised Slippy and insulted him simultaneously by saying "Slippy's not such a screw-up after all", and the latter when ever Andrew or another member pursues him by saying "Hey, nice aircraft guys!" He also does this to Falco in Star Fox Assault during the Sauria mission when he tells him not to mess up, and Slippy retorting him to shut up.
Appearance[]
Slippy's last name suggests that he is a species of toad, but he closely resembles a bullfrog. Slippy is the shortest member in the team, and he and Peppy appear to be "chubby", which is shown by their poor speed stat, while Fox, Falco and Krystal were more slender and faster. Slippy has green and white skin and also has blue eyes.
Slippy wears a red cap that usually has his name imprinted on it and is sitting in between his eye-sockets and a yellow spacesuit with different kinds of equipment including a utility belt and a watch. In games including Star Fox 64 before Assault, Slippy is shown with a jacket much the ones Fox, Falco and Peppy wear and also wears the same tunic with the same black belt with a V-shaped belt buckle and pants and silver boots except the tunic and pants are blue instead of green, orange or red respectively. He is the only character to keep his spacesuit from Assault (although in some cutscenes, he is seen with his other outfit). His outfit in Star Fox 64 3D is much the same as it was in the original, although he, along with Peppy, has been given black gloves similar to Fox's.
