Tomas Vrbada, also known as Smoke is a major character of the Mortal Kombat franchise. He is a Lin Kuei assassin with the power to use smoke and is the best friend of Sub-Zero.
Smoke is portrayed by Daniel Pesina in Mortal Kombat II, as well as both Sal Divita and John Turk in both his cyborg and human forms in Mortal Kombat 3.
History[]
Tomas Vrbada is a member of the Lin Kuei, hailing from the Prague in the Czech Republic. He became the best friend of the younger Sub-Zero, Kuai Liang.
Mortal Kombat II[]
Smoke was originally a secret character along with Jade. In the game's story, Smoke accompanied the new Sub-Zero to Outworld on an unsuccessful mission to assassinate Shang Tsung, after the death of his brother. However, after they returned to Earthrealm, they found that the Lin Kuei have been converted into cyborgs. Smoke and Sub-Zero were horrified and abandoned the Lin Kuei, but Smoke was captured and forcibly converted into a cyborg.
Mortal Kombat III[]
Having become a Cyborg for the Cyber Lin Kuei, Smoke along with Cyrax and Sektor, was part of the Lin Kuei's alliance with Shao Kahn when he invaded Earthrealm, with Smoke himself assigned to kill Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero, believing his friend's soul was buried within the cyborg, managed to remind him of his humanity. Smoke's soul overcome his programming, and joined Raiden's chosen warriors in the struggle against Shao Kahn. In his non canon ending, Smoke used his cybernetic form to bring the fight to Shao Kahn, but his victory was bittersweet, as he had no way to return to his human form. In the main version of events, while battling the Outworld invasion, Smoke managed to defeat Cyrax and Sektor, but was captured by Kahn's forces and imprisoned as a trophy of war.
Mortal Kombat: Deception[]
Smoke made a small appearance in Deception's Konquest Mode, set at an unclear point in the ninja's life. Here, Shujinko encountered the cyborg in Outworld while on a mission. Recognising him as a Lin Kuei member, he tasked Shujinko with passing information to Sub Zero in Earthrealm, in which he was successful. Within the main game, Smoke was discovered by Noob Saibot and was reprogrammed to serve him, but his human soul still remained, albeit imprisoned.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]
Smoke and Noob were defeated in their assault on the Lin Kuei by Taven. Sub-Zero vowed to restore Noob's humanity, but his plans with Smoke remain unknown. It should be noted Smoke is seen as a member of the Forces of Light during the battle of Armageddon, implying Smoke's personality was finally restored, unlike his former master. Smoke joined his old friend and the others during the battle for the power of Blaze, being seen to fight Nitara. However, like the majority of the warriors on both sides, Smoke was killed.
Trivia[]
- As Smoke was a secret character in Mortal Kombat II, he could occasionally be seen hiding behind a tree in the Living Forest, and could make occasional appearances before a match, leaving clues to be able to fight him.
- In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, both the cyborg and human version of Smoke feature, with the latter being unlockable.
- Smoke originally had his own ending before he and Noob Saibot were merged together in Deception. This ending revealed that the remainder of good within his soul incapacitated him within the Netherrealm, forcing his nanobot systems to reformat him, explaining his altered design.
- While the ending itself was cut, Ashrah's ending depicts Smoke malfunctioning in exactly the same way.
