Tomas Vrbada, also known as Smoke, is a major character in the 2023 video game, Mortal Kombat 1, the first installment of the "New Era" in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

He was a member of the Lin Kuei, and the adoptive younger brother of Kuai Liang and Bi-Han (although Bi-Han was more dismissive of him). Following Bi-Han's betrayal, Smoke left the Lin Kuei and became one of the founding members of Shirai Ryu, alongside Kuai Liang and Harumi Shirai, Kuai Liang's wife.

He is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, who also voiced Ben Tennyson from the Ben 10 franchise, Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto franchise, Makoto Yuki from Persona 3, Spider-Man from the Insomniac's Spider-Man series, and Suzaku Kururugi from Code Greass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

Biography[]

Tomas Vrbada was originally a boy from Prague who went hunting with his family, until they fell afoul of the Lin Kuei, who killed them for trespassing. The Grandmaster, horrified at his warrior's actions, adopted Tomas, and he was raised alongside Bi-Han and Kuai Liang as their brother. Smoke would join his brothers as a Lin Kuei in defending Earthrealm, and after being taught by the elder Arcanist Xiaoqing, mastered smoke magic to be equal to his brothers supernatural abilities.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

As part of a secret test for Raiden and Kung Lao, Smoke and the other Lin Kuei played the role of bandits attacking Madame Bo's Teahouse. Smoke thus threatened Madame Bo and her establishment under the pretense of extorting her for protection. When Madame Bo clearly refuses Smoke, he signals for the other Lin Kuei to begin causing havoc. Madame Bo begins a string of attacks, but Smoke quickly turns the tables and sends Madame Bo over the second floor railing and crashing down onto a table below. Kung Lao and Raiden were able to defeat Smoke and the Lin Kuei, and Liu Kang revealed the true nature of the test.

Some time later, as a crisis caused by the sorcerers Shang Tsung and Quan Chi develops, Smoke, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were summoned to Liu Kang's Fire Temple. As Sub-Zero was restless, Smoke advises that they should follow their father's teachings and not rush things but Sub-Zero only warns him to mind his place, reminding him that while he might've been adopted into the Lin Kuei, he doesn't have their blood, with both being shocked at his outburst. After being assigned to infiltrate Ying Fortress to capture Shang Tsung and destroy his Soul Stealers, Smoke observed that aside from the gate, they would have to scale the walls.

During the final chapter, Smoke is selectable as the Final Warrior, and if selected fights his way up the pyramid, and aids Liu Kang in defeating Titan Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. After the battle, Smoke and Scorpion flee from Bi-Han's Lin Kuei to Japan where they meet Harumi Shirai and begin to form the Shirai Ryu clan. However, early on, they found many of the initiates lacking. On night, while on patrol, Smoke was attacked by an unknown assailant, which turned out to be a homeless orphan named Hanzo Hasashi. Seeing his younger self in the boy, Smoke agreed to take him in, was him proving to be a promising first initiate.

Khaos Reigns[]

He was close to Kuai Liang, and looked up to Bi-Han, despite the eldest being somewhat cold to him. He is quietly proud of his abilities, and his skill as a hunter.

Quotes[]

Our clan doesn't govern. It serves.
~ Smoke about the Lin Kuei to Bi-Han.
Heaping pain on others won't help yours!
~ Smoke to Havik.
Kuai Liang and I were working hard to build our new clan. But even with the help of his close friend, Harumi, it was difficult. The biggest problem was finding the initiates. Then, one night, while walking outside Harumi's compound, I was attacked. I thought at first it was a Lin Kuei assassin. But his strikes were uncertain, too angry. My attacker, it turns out, was a boy. Homeless and hungry, his assault was born of desperation. He needed money so that he could eat. It was looking at myself, fifteen years ago. I would've ended up just like him, if the Lin Kuei hadn't taken me in. So I took the boy to Kuai Liang, who also appreciated his fire. We made him our first initiate. The boy's name? Hanzo Hasashi.
~ Smoke's MK1 ending.
