Hero Overview
240px-MTMTESnarl

Snarl is one of the members of the Autobot sub-group called the Dinobots led by Grimlock. He turns into a robotic Stegosaurus. The toy that became Snarl was original part of the Diaclone toy from Takara. According to his bio, Snarl is an Autobot of few words and fewer opinions, Snarl grudgingly follows the orders of Dinobot leader Grimlock and leaves the thinking to others. He's generally unhappy and a loner, and his uncommunicative nature only adds to his feelings of isolation. Only the thrill of battle can elevate his spirits. In fact, few of his comrades experience the joyous heights that Snarl attains while locked in mortal combat. But for him war is an all too brief respite from the twin devils that haunt his miserable existence: the ungainly dinosaur form the Ark has bestowed upon him and the knowledge he may never see his beloved Cybertron again.

History[]

In the original Transformers cartoon series, Snarl was a Stegosaurus Dinobot created by Wheeljack and Ratchet on Earth in 1984. He was created along with Swoop to be the two new Dinobots to go along with the already-created Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge. While Snarl and Swoop were being created, Megatron convinced Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge that Optimus and the Autobots were their enemies and the three original Dinobots kidnapped Optimus Prime. After Wheeljack and Ratchet, with the help of Chip Chase, created Swoop and Snarl, the two new Dinobots were used to rescue Prime from Grimlock, Slag, and Sludge. During that battle, Optimus saved the original Dinobots' lives before the meteorite near them exploded and they then realized that the Autobots were really their friends. Snarl was the only member of the Dinobots to wield an energon sword in robot mode rather than a hand-held gun. It has not been explained why he or the other dinobots were able to be fitted with personalities which can only be found on Cybertron from Vector Sigma. Apparently there is a difference between the brain and personalities in Transformers. Their brains are simple, yet still it is the personalities that make them sentient. It is evident that addition of personalities or "sparks" and its origin was after the fact, and was hoped that this inconsistency would be overlooked.

In 1985, an island with real dinosaurs was found by Powerglide and Bumblebee. Optimus decided that Dinobot Island would be a good place for the Dinobots to train and practice their fighting skills, because the Ark was too small for the giant Dinobots. Megatron and the Decepticons found out about the island and wanted to harvest it for all the energy it produced. The Dinobots were thrown in a pit of tar, but later escaped and, with the help of a group of real dinosaurs, attacked Megatron. Later, the Cybertronian Autobots and Decepticons began to malfunction because they ran out of Cybertonium, a crystalline substance only found on Cybertron. The Dinobots were made on Earth, so they were the only Transformers not affected and were sent to Cybertron to get some. When they got to Cybertron, they disappeared. Spike and Carly went to Cybertron to find them and found Swoop, who led them to the other Dinobots that were captured and working for Shockwave. Eventually they were freed and brought the Cybertonium back so that the Autobot's bodies could be restored.

In 2005, Grimlock and all the Dinobots except Snarl took part in the Battle of Autobot City and against Unicron as seen in The Transformers the Movie. Although Snarl was seen among the Autobots in non-combat scenes in the city, he seemingly disappeared during combat. This is mostly attributed to the lack of synchronization between Toei Animation and the writers, but the subject of what happened to Snarl during the events that unfolded in that battle and the ensuing battle against Unicron is usually regarded with a certain taboo among fans. It can also be interpreted that Snarl was left behind along with Blaster and the othe surviving Autobots to help repair Autobot City as the Autobots suffered a lot of casualties and his strength would be needed to help defend the Autobots who remained. He is, however, seen in very early trailers of the movie, along with his fellow Dinobots.

In the events following the destruction of Unicron and the second Golden age of Cybertron, Snarl is mostly unseen with the exception of a few minor appearances. Snarl was among the primitive Transformers called by Primacron's assistant to battle Tornadron.

Comics[]

Snarl was established near the end of the initial miniseries as a missing member of the Ark crew: A report stated that he and his four comrades were reformatted into Dinobots by the Ark computer in order to battle Shockwave in the Savage Land. He made his first full appearance in Issue #8 when he and the other Dinobots were retrieved by Ratchet. It was revealed that the battle ended with Snarl burying Shockwave under a rockfall shortly before the Dinobots were all sucked into a tar pit. Ratchet recruited them to help him against Megatron: Although the former Decepticon leader easily defeated them, he ended up falling off a cliff anyway.

Snarl was absent from the US comic for some time afterwards, with his story continued in the UK-exclusive story "Decepticon Dambusters". He and the other Dinobots accompanied Ratchet back to the Ark, where most of the Autobots lay dormant, only to be attacked by a Guardian robot left by Shockwave, who quickly took out Swoop. As the storyline continued, Snarl and the others continued to battle Guardian, not realising that destroying him would set off a nuclear bomb inside him. Prowl, Ratchet and Wheeljack, the only Autobots activated, used Optimus Prime's body on remote control to stop the Dinobots. Ultimately, Swoop carried the Guardian clear as he exploded, apparently perishing, and Snarl and the others headed off on their own.

Snarl reappeared in "Dinobot Hunt", where the Autobots went hunting for the four missing Dinobots who, like the already recovered Swoop, had suffered circuit degradation from their time in the tar pit and been reduced to a feral state. Snarl rampaged through a human military base, prompting the base commander to detonate an experimental bomb. The explosion rendered Snarl unconscious and Mirage, Brawn and Trailbreaker were able to take him into custody without difficulty.

Snarl finally returned to the US comic in Issue #19, where he and the other Dinobots broke ties with the Autobots again after Grimlock objected to Optimus Prime's plan to attack the Decepticons and then retreat in order to analyse combiner technology. In the subsequent "In the National Interest", Snarl and the other Dinobots agreed to help Sludge and his friend human journalist Joy Meadows expose the truth of the Autobot/Decepticon war to the public. They were attacked by the Decepticons, with Snarl taking down Scrapper in the melee but then being ambushed by Laserbeak. Although the arrival of the human robot Centurion turned the tide, Soundwave and Laserbeak were able to destroy the humans' footage and intimidate them into ending their plans. In "Fallen Angel", Snarl helped battle a time-displaced Galvatron.

In Issue #27, Snarl and the other Dinobots returned to the Ark following the death of Optimus Prime to stake a claim for Grimlock to be new leader. Finding the Autobots under attack from Trypticon, Snarl was happy to sit back and watch until Grimlock attacked Trypticon on his own. Snarl and the others piled in, with Snarl personally destroying Trypticon's assistant Wipe-Out, and Grimlock was proclaimed Autobot leader. In "Grudge Match", Snarl and the other Dinobots rescued Swoop from the Predacons, with Snarl taking down Headstrong.

Snarl would continue to occasionally appear among Grimlock's entourage. In Issue #36, he participated in Grimlock's plan to use captive humans to lure out the renegade Blaster and the pursuit of Sky Lynx when he interfered. In Issue #41, he accompanied Grimlock in meeting the Nebulan Autobots led by Fortress Maximus and was one of the few to cheer for Grimlock when he and Blaster fought for leadership. Ending up under the command of the returned Optimus Prime, Snarl was part of the team put together to challenge Galvatron in "Time Wars" but was among the present-day Autobots shunted into limbo when Red Alert and a number of other Autobots time-travelled from the future. In Issue #50, he was part of a joint Autobot/Decepticon team led by Grimlock and Scorponok who defended Tokyo from the Underbase-powered Starscream and among those deactivated during the battle.

Snarl returned in Issue #69, where Grimlock removed him and the other Dinobots from suspended animation, eventually reviving them with nucleon. After returning to the Ark and finding it deserted, they headed to Cybertron with several more revived Autobots to join the battle with Unicron in Issue #75. In the final arc, Snarl would remain one of Grimlock's closest associates after he became Autobot leader again, battling Cybertronian demons with him and retrieving stolen Decepticon ships to evacuate the Autobots from the apparently doomed planet. In the final issue, following the Decepticons to Klo, Snarl quickly followed Grimlock in pursuing the first Decepticon they saw into an ambush and was thus one of the first deactivated. He was probably revived by the Last Autobot.

Snarl appeared in Marvel UK's Earthforce storyline. He debuted in "Two Steps Back" where he and the other Dinobots were ambushed by Shockwave's Decepticons, who wanted to know how they were active again. Snarl gave Starscream a severe beating during the battle. He, the other Dinobots and a number of other older Autobots soon joined Grimlock's Autobot Earthforce, left to protect the planet while Optimus Prime took the rest of the force into space. He took part in a practical joke on Grimlock, sending him out into the arctic waste in the belief Shockwave had challenged him to single combat. He had a featured role in "The Living Nightlights" where he accompanied Wheeljack in investigating Sleepfast, a group of nightlights designed to brainwash humans. They learned the mastermind behind it was Mindwipe and managed to overload his circuits by turning on all the lights.

In "The 4,000,000 Year Itch", Snarl joined Sludge and Swoop in concealing Slag's berserker rage from a visiting Optimus Prime. He last appeared in "Assassins", where Grimlock and Wheeljack learned he had a wasting disease, corrodia gravis, and would die without a transplant from another Transformer. He was saved when Starscream agreed to help in return for the Autobots saving him from the Decepticon Mayhem Squad.

The post-movie version of the character appeared in "The Legacy of Unicron", first taking part in the battle on Cybertron ordered by Cyclonus and Scourge under Unicron's control, then accompanying Rodimus Prime to Junk and battling Unicron-controlled Junkions.

Powers and skills[]

His unique design makes Snarl particularly useful in sunny, arid environments. The large golden plates protruding from his spinal assembly are solar collectors. Although he can operate without sunlight, solar energy can increase his strength tenfold and his endurance to a virtually limitless degree. A swipe of his tail can shatter a 20-foot concrete cube. His heavily armoured hide makes him resistant to most missile fire. Snarl's dependency on sunlight makes him extremely vulnerable to attack at night. Although he can use the same fuel the other Autobots use, he operates at only a fraction of his strength when he does. He is also very slow and his uncooperative behaviour patterns sometimes hinder his effectiveness in dangerous situations. Snarl is unique among the Dinobots in that his head is not located near the head of his dinosaur mode. He is also the only Dinobot without wings created from body panels. Instead his tail splits to form "wings" that are more like horns. In the animated series Snarl uses a sword instead of ranged weapons, although the toy comes with an Energon Sword, Electron Cannon rifle and a rocket pod. Snarl is also one of the most powerful Dinobot and also sometimes the strongest.
