Biography[]
Early Life[]
Sokka was born sixteen years prior to the series to Chief Hakoda and Kya of the South Water Tribe. Two years later, his sister Katara was born and unlike his younger sister, Sokka was a non-bender. When Sokka was young, he managed to pass his trials of being a capable leader. However, when he left the rent, Sokka overheard Hakoda discussing with Bato how close his son came to failing. This greatly upset Sokka, who felt like his father didn't believe in him.
During a Fire Nation raid on the village, Sokka and Katara lost their mother, Kya to Southern Raiders and his father went off to war. Sokka was left in charge of watching over his sister and Wolf Cove in his father's absence. They were raised by their paternal grandmother, Gran-Gran.
Season 1[]
Aang[]
While he and Katara went out fishing, they were dragged by a stream of water to an iceberg where Aang is finally freed from it. Out of reluctance, he and Katara take him to the Southern Water Tribe. The next morning, Sokka warned the children not to get near Aang until he saw Appa for the first time. When the Fire Nation were on their way to the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka was shocked to find out Aang was the Avatar and accused him of being a coward for running away from his responsibilities. Sokka considered surrendering Aang to the Fire Nation, but Katara convinced him not to because he was their last hope. With no other choice, Sokka decided to challenge Zuko for a one-on-one fight but was easily outmatched and almost got himself burned alive until Aang stepped in to protect him. Before Aang was taken away by the Fire Nation, Sokka became surprised he called him the bravest person he ever met. He and Katara went to take Appa with them and rescued him from the Fire Nation, thus forming the Team Avatar.
When the Team Avatar arrives at the Southern Air Temple, they are horrified about what happened a hundred years ago, especially seeing Gyatso's skeleton corpse Aang has an emotional breakdown so much that he triggers the Avatar State until he calms down. Later, he and Katara are seen listening to Aang's decision to embrace his duty as the Avatar.
Warriors[]
When Aang suggests they should go to Kyoshi Island, Sokka wants to leave him behind but Katara convinced him not to because they have to be there for him if they want to save the world. He later became angry after discovering a flying lemur had eaten the food in Katara's bag. Before they leave, she and Sokka watch Aang give a proper burial for Gyatso. While they're setting off for Kyoshi Island, Sokka becomes upset that Momo joins them, bitterly saying he tastes just like chicken.
When the Team Avatar first arrived at Kyoshi Island, Sokka entered the temple which got themselves captured by the Kyoshi Warriors until it was stopped when the statue of Kyoshi flashed lights under Aang from its eyes before they were brought to Mayor Yukari. Later, Sokka talks with Suki about their commonality in being warriors and protectors of their respective villages. The next morning, Sokka instantly became jealous of Suki's abilities and he tried to show off what he could do until he was outmatched. He later watches Suki train with the other Kyoshi Warriors before he starts training with her. After finished his training, they began to grow closer and almost kissed until Zhao and the Fire Nation arrived at Kyoshi Village. He and Suki went to fight against the Fire Nation until they became outnumbered. However, they later witnessed Aang (possessed by Kyoshi) arrive and defeat Zhao and his soldiers, forcing them to retreat. After the Team Avatar are leaving Kyoshi Island, Sokka encourages Aang that he's not alone and they're doing their mission to save the world together.
Omashu[]
While flying on Appa, the Team Avatar saw a young boy flying with his glider landing in Omashu, which is where they would go. When they got to the Omashu, they managed to get past the gate with the help of a turnip farmer. When they got up to the young boy, Aang realized he was not an airbender and the boy introduced himself as Teo. They also met Teo's father, a mechanist named Sai. Seeing many people getting hurt by the bombings of the supposed Firebenders, Aang decides to stay in Omashu to help people as the Avatar.
While Aang and Teo fly up to the mountain and Katara meets Jet and the Freedom Fighters, Sokka stays behind to help Sai until Aang returns to present him a blasting jelly and robes from the turnip cart that reveals Jet to be the mastermind behind the bombing incidents. When Katara returns back to Sai's home, Sokka argues with Katara when she tries to explain that Sai's the one who's behind the bombings. After Katara discovers Jet's true nature and intentions, the Team Avatar goes to stop the explosion but they are stopped by Zuko. While Aang fought Zuko all by himself, Sokka and Katara went up to the palace where Katara used the Water Ship to stop the suitcase from exploding.
Into the Dark[]
Sokka and Teo called out Sai for working with Fire Nation, but the Mechanist tried to defend himself by claiming he was only doing it to protect Omashu from them, even if it meant for the sake of his son's safety. Later, Katara returns and informs that Aang is being held in prison. After Sai explains what the Earth Kingdom prison is about, he and Katara enter the secret tunnel where they meet singing nomadic minstrels and learn about the love story between Oma and Shu which led to the creation of Omashu. In the tunnels, the two Water Tribe siblings are trying to find a way to the palace to rescue Aang and when they argue with each other, they are chased by a Badgermole, where they realize it navigates through emotions. They later save Aang and Bumi from getting crushed by falling debris before the Team Avatar leaves Omashu.
Spirited Away[]
After they escaped from the Fire Nation soldiers while on the run, Team Avatar spotted a burned-down forest that was already destroyed by the Fire Nation. Team Avatar later met a young girl from a village where several people went missing including Shi-yong. Aang later agrees to help save the people.
When Team Avatar gets to the forest where the shrine to the spirit is, Katara and Sokka are taken to the Spirit World as result of Aang's method through meditation. However, they were chased by an angry spirit named Hei Bai who got them separated, and Sokka ended up encountering a white three-tailed fox. Sokka later ended up at the Fog of the Lost Souls where he was taken back to the Northern Water Tribe when he thinks he passed an ice-dodging test before he overheard his father talk back about him behind his back. He was later captured by Koh along with his sister Katara and the villagers.
Masks[]
After Aang returns to the Spirit World to give the totem back to Koh, Sokka, and Katara regain their consciousness after they are released from Koh's captive along with the others.
The North[]
The Team Avatar arrived at the Northern Water Tribe where they were greeted by its people including Chief Arnook and Pakku. He also first saw Princess Yue in person. During the feast, Sokka keeps staring at Princess Yue before walking into the kitchen where they begin to talk with each other. Seeing Yue's headpiece, causes Sokka to recognize her as a white fox while he's at the Spirit World. The next morning, he was asked by Hahn to help join the fight. While they're talking, Hahn reveals that Yue has broken off their arranged marriage Arnook put them together when they were children and he's fine with it. While he's at Kuruk's temple, Sokka discovers that Yue became a half-spirit and a half-human after she was healed by the Moon Spirit's energy. Later, Sokka and the others were witnessing the fight between Katara and Pakku until they noticed the Fire Nation's arrival.
Legends[]
After Team Avatar managed to ambush the Fire Nation ship, they realized how much army they needed to take down. During the battle against the Fire Nation, Sokka was tasked by Chief Arnook to protect Yue. Later that night, he becomes devastated at seeing Momo get heavily injured after saving a girl from getting crushed, but later shows relief after the winged lemur is healed by the Moon Spirit. When Zhao, Iroh, and the Fire Nation soldiers arrive at the spirit oasis, Sokka, Yue, and Aang are horrified to see Zhao killing the Moon Spirit. While Aang merged with an Ocean Spirit and transformed into a giant Koizilla, Sokka tried to stop Yue from sacrificing herself to revive the Moon Spirit, but she later did which restored the Waterbenders' abilities and ended the Siege of the North. Following the aftermath of the battle, Sokka apologized to Chief Arnook over Yue's death.
Appearance[]
In contrast to his animated counterpart, this Sokka is sixteen in Season 1 as opposed to 15 and has brown eyes instead of blue. However he still retains his brown hair and tanned skin. He wears a blue kimono like tunic split in the sides, blue pants, brown boots, braces and belt. He wears a blue parka adorned with white fur when he is in cold climate. When in battle, he wears a brown shoulder pads and chest plates. Sokka's hair is slightly longer and he keeps it in a warrior wolf's tail.
Personality[]
Sokka takes his duties of protecting Wolf Cove and his remaining family seriously due to his father's absence since he was just thirteen years old. He is protective towards his sister such as forbidding her from Waterbending out of fear that the Fire Nation will kill her if she is discovered. He is more than willing to turn Aang over to the Fire Nation and willingly abandon him due to the Avatar State nearly getting him and Katara killed. He also doesn't want Katara to Waterbend in fear of her being killed by the Fire Nation like their mother. Over time, however, Sokka becomes protective of both Katara and Aang as the oldest of the group.
Despite his initial reluctance, Sokka considers Zuko to be a danger to them all aftee seeing how obsessed the Fire Prince is to capture Aang. He finally shows Aang he has Sokka, Katara, Appa, and Momo's support in this fight. During the journey, Sokka eventually realizes that Katara is a capable young woman and backed her up when she was challenging Pakku. He later praises his sister for her skills and tells Aang he is silly for thinking he can protect Anga Qela all by himself. Sokka is also prone to making witty or sarcastic remarks. He initially doesn't get along with Momo, with Sokka threatening to eat the little creature. In turn, Momo antagonizes him by stealing the boy's fruit and landing on top of his head. However, he truly showed concern for Momo when he was hit by a falling debris rock and was relieved when Yue cured Momo.

Trivia[]
- His sexism is also toned down in the series. When he first meets the Kyoshi warriors, Sokka gets jealous of Suki, thinking she is a better warrior than him rather than being annoyed that she is a woman. The reason for this change is unclear, although it's possible due to the live-action series having to remove plotlines due to time constraints or due to the fact that both Sokka and Katara's jerkish traits are toned down significantly.
- In the original cartoon Sokka was only 15 but in Netflix's remake he is 16. This is also similar to Zuko, who was also aged up to 17. Sokka and Zuko were most likely aged up to better suit their actors' ages.
