~ Solana to Spenser in one of her letters. |
Solana (ヒナタ Hinata Jap.) is the optional playable female character of Pokémon Ranger video game. However, she is also involved in the story if the player chooses to play as the male character Lunick. Solana also serves as a deuteragonist in the Pokémon anime. Her job is to harness the power of certain Pokémon and utilize their abilities to help defend nature, hunt down Pokémon poachers, and aid in crime thwarting.
Solana is voiced by Rhonda Krempa who also voices Kenny in the anime.
Appearance[]
Solana stands out from many other female protagonists in the Pokémon games, as she appears to be in her teenage years, likely around 16 years old, unlike the usual preteen age of other female characters. Solana has fair skin, long light blue hair in an upturned ponytail (which does not seem to be tied with a holder of any kind), and red eyes. She is also slender and fit, has long legs, and is tall (which is backed up by the fact that someone calls her a "big girl" early on in the game). Despite her size and stature, Solana dons a form-fitting Ranger uniform that appears slightly oversized on her, as noted by Spenser.
Solana's Rank 3 Ranger uniform consists of an open red short-sleeved jacket with white cuffs and yellow lapels/collar as well as having her Ranger rank patch on either shoulder. Underneath her jacket, she sports a white high-neck top over a sleek black spandex bodysuit featuring striking gold accents along her waistband and sides and high-hip leg cuts akin to that of a one-piece leotard. For accessories, Solana wears a red headband over her forehead, a white belt slung on her hip that holsters her Catcher Styler device, and black/red and white fingerless gloves that match her jacket and leotard. As for legwear, she wears very long thigh-high black socks with gold borders at the tops and red and white high-top shoes with black lines. Solana is surprisingly physically strong for a female, as she is capable of running very fast and handling very strong Pokémon with her Styler.

"<Player>, <player>… OK, I've memorized it! Welcome to our team! We'll be working together from now on. Let's do our best! Oh, and this is my partner Pokémon. Plusle! Come on, say hello!" "This building is Ringtown's Ranger Base. Come on, let's go in!" |

While the playable version of Solana has no spoken dialogue, her personality can readily be seen through her actions and the dialogue of NPCs. Personality-wise, Solana is energetic, driven, and has a courageous heart. She is selfless and will readily do anything to uphold her duty as a Ranger, even if it means putting herself at risk. She is also a talented writer and is very good at expressing herself through letters. The NPC version of Solana remains consistent, but her personality shines through her dialogue, offering players the opportunity to interpret and project their own personalities onto her, as is common with protagonists.
In the Anime[]
Solana's anime counterpart is an athletic quick-thinking young woman and very dedicated to her profession. At first, she harbored a strong aversion to enlisting civilians for her missions. This sentiment was evident when she declined the offer of assistance from Ash and his friends during her initial appearances. She made it clear that her reluctance stemmed from her desire to prevent harm to anyone in case the situation took a turn for the worse. As time goes by, Solana gradually warms up to Ash and his group, forming a strong bond as they support her in pursuing her goals. On another occasion, in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! In Part 1 and Part 2, she recommended that Kellyn work alongside Ash and the others to save the Aura Sphere Riolu.
Biography[]
Beginnings[]
Originating from the enchanting region of Fiore, Solana meticulously crafted seven heartfelt letters to Ranger Leader Spenser before the game's events. In each eloquent letter, she passionately conveyed her aspirations of becoming a Pokémon Ranger and providing aid to those in need. Solana's adeptness at expressing herself through the written word left a lasting impression on Spenser. He admired her dedication to physical training, unwavering commitment to becoming a Ranger, selfless acts of kindness towards others, and harmonious coexistence with Pokémon while valiantly defending nature.
In games[]
Solana is the female character in Pokémon Ranger. However, she has a role in the story even if the male character is chosen. Solana will have a Plusle as a partner, whether she is the protagonist or not. She is often seen alongside the male character: some of the secondary characters assume that there is a romantic connection between them. Upon receiving Spenser's response, Solana dons her freshly pressed uniform and rendezvous with him at the harbor of Fall City on the following Sunday. There, after being introduced, Solana courageously saves a wild Plusle's life after it harmlessly pranks a wild Houndoom. Impressed by her skills and dedication, Spenser presents Solana with an official certificate, solidifying her new status as a Ranger. After Solana takes the Ranger's Oath, Spenser calls his Fearow to soar them to the settlement of Ringtown. However, they are shocked when the Plusle that Solana had saved grips her leg just as they take off. After they touch down, they eventually have to release the Plusle, still shocked that it managed to cling to Solana's leg the entire way. After solving a series of problems in the Lyra Forest and forming an emotional connection with the Plusle from before, Solana officially begins her duties as a Ranger. She helps dozens of people throughout the Fiore region, fights back the evil Go-Rock Squad, and eventually hones her skills to the point that she becomes one of the best Rangers in the Pokémon World.
In anime[]
Solana first appeared in The Green Guardian episode, in which she accompanied Ash and her friends as he tried to help the injured Celebi. In the aftermath of a massive flood, Solana and her partner Plusle meet and intercept Ash, Brock, May , and Max in a forest off Cycling Road and attempt to prevent them from going any deeper into the forest. However, they explained that Ash's Pikachu sensed something and they were following him. After calling the Ranger Union, she led them to find Pikachu. As they got deeper into the forest, Solana sensed Celebi was nearby and captured three Linoone so they could use Slash on the growing vines. Upon finding Pikachu and Celebi, they gained Celebi's trust and helped it recover, only for it to be captured by Team Rocket in their mecha. As Solana freed Celebi, she commanded Plusle to use Thunder Wave to destroy the mech and watched Ash and Pikachu send Team Rocket blasting off with the latter's newly mastered Volt Tackle. After Celebi healed the forest and returned to its own time, Solana called the Ranger Union and told them her task was complete before parting ways with Ash and co.
She later appears in A Deoxys in Crisis and The Loneliness of the Deoxys where she meets Ash and her friends again and she becomes involved in an incident that she searches for Deoxys. She met Ash and co. again while looking for a meteorite while overlooking a cliff and refusing to let them come as she considered it too dangerous. After finding the cave where the electromagnetic disturbances were coming from, she discovered Max had followed her and, in turn, he had been followed by Ash, Brock and May, leaving her no choice but to let them come along. They soon found Deoxys at the end of the cave. She was unable to use her Capture Styler on it since Deoxys needed to be in its Normal Forme for it to work. She, Ash, Brock, May and Team Rocket were shocked when Deoxys disappeared with Max and Meowth. She then travelled to the area of the sun's collision with a geomagnetic disturbance before returning to the cave with the others, where they discovered the meteorite was the source of the disturbances and exploded, with the group escaping the cave before it did. She attempted to capture Deoxys again and succeeded in doing so, only after Ash's Sceptile weakened it, healing it from the pain it experienced. After Deoxys left, Solana told the Ranger Union of the success of her task before departing again.
Solana made a cameo appearance in the opening for Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea where she, amid a forest fire singlehandedly rescued a small group of Pokémon with the combined help of a Marill, Azurill, and an Azumarill put out the fire with Water Gun while she tends to a Sentret in her arms.

Capture Styler (formerly "The Capture Loopy-Looper"): Solana, like other Rangers upon the completion of their training, uses a Capture Styler device created by Rangers Union founder Professor Hastings to capture Pokémon temporarily. Unlike Trainers who catch Pokémon with a Poké Ball, a capture performed with a Styler allows Solana to gain the assistance of wild Pokémon temporarily. The Styler, a cell phone-like device, launches a capture disc that creates a beam of energy. This energy transmits the Ranger's feelings of friendship to the Pokémon when the energy loops them. When the Ranger's friendship and intentions are fully conveyed to a Pokémon, they join them as temporary allies. It is similar to a remote-controlled toy top. A spinning, top-like device called a Capture Disc is launched which is controlled from the main device. There are other functions of the Capture Styler with the main one being capturing Pokémon. Other uses include the Ranger Browser, the Ranger's equivalent to the Pokédex, the Glossary, the save function (only available when near a save machine), and the retire option, allowing a complete restart of the mission the Ranger is currently on.
Trivia[]
