Background[]

Solid Snake was born in 1972. He was a creation from the Les Enfants Terribles project and the son of the legendary soldier, Big Boss, along with his "brothers" Liquid Snake (his twin) and Solidus Snake. After being taught to be a soldier by multiple foster parents and being named David, David was inducted into the Green Berets, leading to him joining the FOXHOUND unit, lead by Big Boss. He received the code-name 'Solid Snake' and was trained to be an amazing soldier. At some point, Big Boss told Snake the partial truth that he was his father.

Metal Gear[]

Under the long distance command of Big Boss, Snake's first FOXHOUND mission was in 1995, where he had to rescue the group's member, Grey Fox, after he was captured and held prisoner in an enemy base by Outer Heaven. He then discovered the war machine Metal Gear, a huge tank on legs that can launch nuclear warheads anywhere, is one of the weapons Outer Heaven is using. With the help of resistance members Schneider, Diane, and Jennifer, Snake succeeded in rescuing Dr. Madnar and his daughter Ellen, and destroyed TX-55 Metal Gear. However, he also discovered that Big Boss was the leader of the Outer Heaven Uprising. On the 100th floor basement, Snake then killed the man he believed was Big Boss before retiring from FOXHOUND.

Solid Snake[]

However, four years later in 1999, Snake was called back into FOXHOUND by its new commander, Roy Campbell. The mission was to rescue Dr. Kio Marv from a base in Zanzibar Land and destroy a new rumored Metal Gear. During the mission, Snake was advised by Master Miller, Geroge Kasler, and his anonymous "Number One Fan". After finding another spy named Holly White, Snake searched by Marv, but was tricked by a disguised Black Ninja. After battling him, Snake was shocked to discover he was in fact Schneider, who had been rescued by Zanzibar Land's president, who he implied to be Big Boss. The dying Schneider gave Snake clues about where to find the real Dr. Marv. After discovering Dr. Marv can only speak Czech and Slovakian, Snake had to find Marv's bodyguard, Gustava Heffner, then ran into a hostile Grey Fox, resulting in the death of Heffner and Marv.

After fighting off the treacherous Madnar, Snake used Gustava's brooch as a key to retrieve the OILIX formula. Snake destroyed Metal Gear D, and fought and defeated Grey Fox in a minefield, who admitted in his dying moments his reasons for joining Big Boss, and that he had been the "Number One Fan" who had helped him. Immediately after, Snake confronted Big Boss, and after hearing Big Boss's belief in eternal war, disgustedly vowed to kill him once and for all. With advice from Miller, Snake was able to piece together a makeshift flamethrower and set him alight. Snake escaped the facility with Holly, fending off enemy troops in the jungle until they were extracted by helicopter, and went back into retirement.

Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes[]

Yet again in early 2005, Snake was called back for another mission by Campbell. Getting sent to Shadow Moses Island in Alaska, Snake was supposed to stop a group of terrorists that are threatening to spread chaos with yet another Metal Gear nicknamed REX, sculpted from FOXHOUND and led by Snake's evil twin, Liquid Snake. When intercepting the facility, Snake befriended the engineer Hal Emmerich, better known as Otacon, and the FOXHOUND recruit, Meryl Silverburgh (who is actually Campbell's niece, whom later on in the series finds out is Campbell's daughter). During this, much to Snake's surprise, he finds out that an enigmatic cyborg ninja is following him, providing him with tips.

It was then the ninja revealed that he is in fact Grey Fox, whose "corpse" was recovered and sculpted to be a robotic killing machine. After beating FOXHOUND's Revolver Ocelot, killing the psychic known as Psycho Mantis, killing the beautiful but deadly Sniper Wolf, and beating the shaman power house Vulcan Raven, Snake, with the help of a now assisting Grey Fox, defeats Liquid (at the cost of Grey Fox's life) and destroys Metal Gear REX. In the end, it is seen how Revolver Ocelot had his forearm severed by Grey Fox earlier. He then uses a deceased Liquid's arm for a replacement, as Liquid was ironically killed by FOXDIE. Snake and Meryl, who were in a now close relationship, escaped the destroyed Alaskan base and lived happily only to later be separated. It was also during this time that when Snake was injected with FOXDIE, it was by a vengeful Naomi Hunter who wanted payback against Snake for what he did to Big Boss and Gray Fox, but upon learning of Snake's true motives, Big Boss being Snake's father, and Gray Fox helping him save her and the world from nuclear annihilation by Liquid Snake and the FOXHOUND terrorists, she forgave Snake, apologized for letting her anger and lust for revenge blind her to the truth, and told Snake to live his life to the fullest until the FOXDIE killed him, before she was arrested for high treason and imprisoned, then was busted out by Revolver Ocelot, now known as Liquid Ocelot, and vanished from public view.

Sons of Liberty[]

Snake and Otacon found the anti-Metal Gear NGO, Philanthropy, with the goal of eradicating all Metal Gear technology. In late 2007, it was discovered that the US Marines were making another Metal Gear, nicknamed RAY, made to counter other REXes. Snake snuck onto the Marine's ship to find proof of their construction, only to run into Revolver Ocelot, who stole RAY, sunk the ship, and escaped, but not before Snake found out that, through the nano-machines in Liquid's arm Ocelot is using in place of his severed one, Liquid can possess Ocelot, making the hybrid: Liquid Ocelot. Snake was thought to be dead after the ship's sinking, so he was replaced by the young soldier, Raiden. That was until two years later, when Snake infiltrated The Big Shell disguised as Navy SEAL Iroquois Pliskin, and going with the identity throughout most of the game.

He met Raiden, still pretending to be Pliskin. They were attacked by the Dead Cell member Vamp, and Snake helps Raiden to disarm the C4 planted around the Shell's struts. He later met Solidus Snake, another brother/clone of Snake and Liquid, whom Raiden dealt with. Finally, Snake met with Liquid Ocelot again, but of course, he escaped, but not before Snake planted a tracker on RAY.

Guns of the Patriots[]

War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines. War - and its consumption of life - has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control, all in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction, and he who controls the battlefield, controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control, war becomes routine.
~ Solid Snake's opening narration of the game

After the Big Shell Incident, it was found out that Snake was suffering rapid aging from Werner's Syndrome, and he will most likely die in a year, even having the disease, FOXDIE, that was injected into him in 2005 by Naomi, that will spread when it becomes a pathological weapon from mutating. Five years later in 2014, Snake was assigned to do one last mission before his death at the request of Roy Campbell and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC): Assassinate Liquid Ocelot before he does damage with his collection of PMC armies, Outer Heaven, with the deadly Beauty and The Beast Unit.

In the first act, Snake is deployed in the Middle East to deal with the UK-based Praying Mantis PMC currently in open battle with the local militia forces there. While exploring, he meets Drebin 893 and is injected with nanomachines to help him use ID-tagged weapons better, especially his M4 Custom he was given by Drebin personally. It is later he witnesses the brutal slaughter of a unit of militiamen by the Beauty and the Beast Unit when they got too close to the Praying Mantis main camp. He makes it in himself, but just as he spots Liquid and prepares to take the shot, Liquid activates something that causes the Praying Mantis PMC troopers to suddenly collapse into emotional fits. Even Meryl Silverburgh and her Rat Patrol Team 01 are affected, except Johnny Sasaki. However, Naomi, an old friend from Shadow Moses who was the one who injected FOXDIE into Snake, returned, appearing before Snake when he collapses from the effects as well, leaving him a syringe she injected herself with before departing with Liquid.

In the second act, she contacts Snake and Hal "Otacon" Emmerich to warn them of Liquid's plan and her being held hostage in a lab in South America, asking them to come rescue her. When Snake reaches the lab after slipping past the French-based Pieurve Armament PMC troops engaging the South American rebels assaulting their headquarters that sat in front of the lab, she has Snake be treated to some medical tests in regards to his condition. She revealed that Snake's rapid aging is not from a disease, but, being a clone, is his natural life span. She also reveals that the FOXDIE she injected him with originally back at Shadow Moses has begun to mutate within Snake's body. Within three months, Snake will become a walking pathological doomsday device, lest he choose suicide to prevent it, as FOXDIE will die with the host should they die before it can fully mutate. After Naomi tells Snake the name of Liquid's plan being "Guns of the Patriots", she is evacuated out of the lab by Pieurve Armament troops while their female Haven Trooper counterparts and Beauty and the Beast Unit member Laughing Octopus keep Snake distracted from immediate pursuit. Once Snake defeats them and can begin pursuit of Naomi, guided by advice from Raiden, he soon reaches the heliport where Naomi was about to depart with Vamp. After plugging Vamp with a single headshot and then returning fire with the Pieurve Armament troops defending the helicopter as it takes off, Snake and the PMCs are soon suffering the same effects from the Middle East when Liquid attempts his takeover of the Sons of the Patriots System again. However, Drebin arrives with his Stryker to help get Naomi and Snake out of there, and after fighting past the now zombie-like PMCs, along with Gekko and powered suits, they reach the nearby town, but the Gekko catch up to them, and Drebin crashes his Stryker. Luckily, Raiden arrives to draw the Gekko away from Snake and Naomi while they flee to Otacon's chopper. Some Gekko still go after Snake, and he's forced to fight his way through the local marketplace while avoiding friendly fire among the panicked civilians fleeing the Gekko, who are wise enough not to fire on civvies, even if Snake is hiding among them, and get through to Otacon's chopper. Climbing aboard with Naomi before the Gekko catch them, Snake soon helps Raiden when he sees Raiden is captured by the Gekko and being confronted by Vamp, but though Raiden wounds Vamp enough that he collapses from his injuries, Vamp soon recovers thanks to his nanomachines, but not before Raiden escapes with Snake, Otacon, and Naomi, but also severely wounded, needing a blood transfusion of artificial white blood before he slips into autotoxemia. Before passing out, Raiden tells Snake to head to Europe to find someone named "Big Mama".

In the third act, following Raiden's info, the group, now joined by Naomi, head to Eastern Europe, not only to follow Liquid, but to also locate Big Mama, who possesses the corpse of Big Boss. Naomi and Sunny take Raiden to Dr. Madnar to get the dialysis equipment needed to heal him, while Snake has a reunion with Meryl and Rat Patrol Team 01 before beginning his search for Big Mama and her Paradise Lost Resistance Army. Tailing one of the Paradise Lost members and protecting him from being caught by the US-based Raven Sword troopers patrolling the streets due to a curfew that was in effect, Snake is soon led to the cathedral where he meets Big Mama, who provides much backstory about the Patriots, Les Enfants Terrible, and the split in the Patriots due to conflicting views between Big Boss and Major Zero, leading to Gray Fox killing Dr. Clark (Para-Medic), and Ocelot torturing Donald Anderson (Sigint) to death back at Shadow Moses, leaving Zero the only survivor of his branch of the Patriots. Big Mama later shows Big Boss' remains to Snake, before it is discovered that Naomi has returned to Liquid, and the Paradise Lost forces have been compromised due to a trio of Dwarf Gekko/Scarabs having followed Snake to the church and transmitted the location back to Liquid. With the Raven Sword PMC forces closing in, Big Mama, Snake, and the Paradise Lost forces are forced to flee, splitting up with taking several decoy vans to draw off the pursuing PMCs, with Big Mama, Snake, and five Paradise Lost members fleeing with the real van. During the chase, the four Paradise Lost members on motorcycles with Big Mama wipe out and crash, killing them, leaving only the member driving the van left. Raging Raven, the second member of the Beauty and the Beast Unit, joins the chase with her UCAVs and FROGs, but though Big Mama and Snake outmaneuver her and escape, reuniting with the van, a missile strike from one of the Slider UCAVs causes the van and Big Mama to crash, with Big Mama being severely wounded when she is impaled on a metal spike from a security gate she slams back first against. Despite her wound, she's more worried for the van and the Paradise Lost member that was driving it. After Snake confirms the driver didn't make it, he arms Big Mama with the member's FN FAL assault rifle to defend herself with, while he goes up into the tower to deal with Raging Raven. After he defeats her and claims her MGL-140 grenade launcher, he rejoins Big Mama, and learning that the van they were escorting was a decoy as well, they prepare to use the sewers to get to the Volta River to meet up with the surviving members of the resistance preparing to transport Big Boss' corpse to safety by boat, unaware that a Scarab witnesses their escape into the sewer. When they reach the Volta, they find Liquid waiting for them, with the Paradise Lost getaway boat an overturned, flaming wreck, to Big Mama's despair. Surrounded by FROGs, with Vamp and Naomi on Liquid's gunboat, Snake tries to protect himself and Big Mama, but Liquid easily disarms him of both his M4 Custom and M1911 Operator while leaving Snake's stun knife stuck in his shoulder, before revealing that he is also in possession of GW, the Patriot AI that was presumed destroyed during the Big Shell Incident by Otacon's sister Emma's worm cluster. Using it as a backdoor and Trojan core to slip past JD and the other surviving Patriot AIs and their security defenses, Liquid plans to use GW to launch his insurrection after destroying JD with a nuclear strike, with every intent to finish what Big Boss and Major Zero started. However, as he takes his leave afterwards, he is surrounded by Meryl, Rat Patrol, and a large coalition of United States Army soldiers and Marines that have him bracketed by land, sea, and air. Not at all afraid of the massive number of guns being trained on him, Liquid moves to give a signal. Fearing it, Meryl orders everyone to take aim, and despite Snake shouting for Liquid to stop, the moment Meryl shouts for her forces to open fire, Liquid activates GW and disables all their guns, jamming the triggers so they can't fire them. He then disables the helicopters hovering overhead, causing them to crash, has one of his FROGs fire on Rat Patrol with her FN P90, then causes all the American troops to suffer similar effects to what happened to Liquid's PMCs in the Middle East and South America, including Rat Patrol again. With the U.S. forces helpless, Liquid slaughters them with his FROGs as Snake protects Big Mama, and Naomi watches in horror at the carnage she's unleashed. By the time Liquid orders his elite female soldiers to cease fire, most of the U.S. soldiers and Marines are dead or wounded. After firing a salvo from his gunboat's cannons at Rat Patrol's boat, Liquid pulls alongside to return Big Boss to them, before drawing a Thor .45-70 to shoot and destroy Big Boss, causing Snake, who was trying to save Big Mama as she put her own life in harm's way to protect Big Boss, to be severely burned on the left side of his face as Big Boss' remains are destroyed.

So long, Snake!
~ Liquid Ocelot

After Liquid leaves, Drebin arrives to tend to Snake and the others, while Big Mama, despite Snake's efforts, dies from exhaustion and her wounds.

In the fourth act, following the carnage from the Volta, Snake is on his way back to Shadow Moses Island, as Liquid is on his way there with Naomi and Vamp to acquire Metal Gear REX's railgun to launch a nuclear warhead not tagged by SOP to take out JD. After dealing with some reminiscing from his previous visit there and seeing how much it changed since the Shadow Moses Incident, Snake reaches where he had fought Sniper Wolf, only to find himself fighting the next Beauty and the Beast Unit member in Crying Wolf and her escort of FROGs. After a difficult fight of cat and mouse, Snake defeats her and claims her railgun to use himself. Making his way via an alternate route to REX's hangar, he arrives to find the railgun already gone, and Vamp and Naomi waiting for him. Vamp decides to entertain himself by fighting Snake personally, but Snake soon manages to subdue Vamp an inject him with suppressor nanomachines to stop his regenerating ability. Raiden arrives to face Vamp himself while Snake deals with the Gekko that have shown up, including Suicide Gekko armed with nuclear demolition charges to destroy REX and the hangar. Using Crying Wolf's railgun to keep them at bay, Snake holds them off long enough for Raiden to deliver several mortal blows to Vamp, before administering a final slash to finish Vamp off. As Vamp convulses as his nanomachines try to heal his wounds, Naomi appears with a syringe to use on Vamp to finally kill him. When Otacon hesitates to use it to avenge his sister Emma, Vamp grabs it and injects himself, allowing him to finally die. Naomi then turns the syringe on herself to commit suicide, as she was already suffering from terminal cancer, so her nanomachines had only been keeping the malignant tumors at bay for so long before she decided to kill herself to atone for her sins. Otacon is too overcome by grief to attempt to escape, having the Metal Gear Mk. III taser Snake when he tried to help, but once Otacon finally overcomes his mourning for Naomi, he helps get REX online, so with Snake piloting it and Raiden riding with them, they attempt to escape before the Gekko overwhelm them. Unfortunately, when they reach the harbor at the end of the escape tunnel, Liquid appears in Metal Gear RAY to fight Snake and REX. Despite RAY having the advantage, Snake and REX are able to defeat it, before REX collapses and deactivates, causing Snake to injure himself with a dislocated shoulder and bleeding cut on his forehead. Liquid survives though, and as Snake limps after him, Liquid's flagship, the Arsenal Gear Outer Haven, rises from the ocean to pick up Liquid. Snake fires futilely at Liquid with his M4 Custom, but his dislocated shoulder prevents him from accurate fire, and Liquid escapes, preparing to use Outer Haven to destroy the pier and crush Snake, who had collapsed to his knees and apparently went catatonic, refusing to budge. Only Raiden's timely intervention, at the cost of an arm, snaps Snake out of his daze when Raiden shouts for him to get clear and Snake crawls backwards to safety before Raiden's cyborg strength gives out and he's crushed by Outer Haven. Thankfully, Mei Ling arrives with the USS Missouri and forces Outer Haven into retreat when she fires on the Arsenal Gear with the Iowa-class battleship's main 16-inch batteries, though Liquid scoffs at the attempt, calling the old WWII battleship a "worthless fossil". After Liquid withdraws, Snake is picked up and transported back to the Missouri for medical attention.

In the fifth act, the Missouri is hurrying after Outer Haven to intercept it before it can use REX's railgun to take out JD at perigee above the Bering Strait. Drebin has hitched a ride to arm the U.S. sailors and Marines with non-ID guns and other weapons for their impending battle, and Snake, joined by Meryl and Johnny, will catapult aboard Outer Haven to upload a virus into GW to stop Liquid's plan. Though Snake makes it aboard, Meryl lands in the wrong place, spraining her ankle, and Johnny ends up falling into the ocean. Snake is forced to slip past the FROGs alerted to his intrusion, along with Gekko, to reach the hatch he needed to open to slip inside the ship. Once inside the command center, he is forced into fighting the final member and leader of the Beauty and the Beast Unit, Screaming Mantis, while protecting Meryl when she ends up being used by Mantis against Snake. After Snake defeats Screaming Mantis and deals with the spirit of Psycho Mantis before he is banished back into the void by The Sorrow, he leaves Meryl behind to guard his back while he heads through the missile bays to reach the final microwave corridor to GW, dealing with an unending army of Scarabs that try to stop him. Once past those, he has to deal with one last group of FROGs who decide to finish off Snake with their machetes when they see how vulnerable he was. Thankfully, Raiden, now without both of his arms, arrives to help Snake, but though Raiden offers to navigate the microwave corridor himself as he could tank it easier due to his cyborg body, Snake refuses and asks Raiden to cover him while he does it. Accepting his decision, Raiden promises to give the FROGs hell and stall for as long as he could do so. With that, Snake enters the final descent to the corridor, and after initially balking at the heat released when the door opens, Snake begins making his way through to GW. As his ammo cooks off, his suit is ripped open, his Solid Eye explodes, and the moisture in his body boils, Snake is able to stagger, crawl, and drag himself all the way through to the door, where once inside, he throws up before collapsing with a pained wheeze before recovering somewhat to see GW itself. While Otacon has the Mk. III plug in to upload the virus, Snake watches, before sensing movement, and finds the server room being invaded by Scarabs. He does his best to fight them off with CQC and his M4 Custom, but the Scarabs soon begin to gain the advantage in numbers and overwhelm Snake, with some managing to grab onto him and zap him with their tasers to weaken him. Just as it looks like they will overtake him and go after the Mk. III next, Otacon successfully uploads the virus, and the Scarabs instantly shut down and go inert, while elsewhere, the FROGs overwhelming Raiden, Meryl, and Johnny collapse as they are overwhelmed by the return of their suppressed emotions, and all of Liquid's forces attacking the Missouri shut down or are incapacitated, allowing the Marines to take the surviving FROGs into custody. Shortly thereafter, Otacon finds the virus is taking out JD and the other AIs in TJ, TR, and AL as well. A pre-recorded video from Naomi then appears to explain the situation to everyone. Having learned of the Patriots' plan to take control of the civilian population as well, Naomi was obligated to stop it, thus the virus, named "FOXALIVE", is taking out the Patriot AIs while ensuring the survival of modern civilization. As for Snake, he appears to stop breathing as the video ends, and is brought out by Otacon, where Liquid then takes Snake to the sail of Outer Haven to reveal that Snake actually helped Liquid as his so-called "insurrection" was a cover for Snake and his allies to do what Liquid wanted them to do: Free the world from the shackles of the Patriots. After providing some more backstory about the Patriots, the Philosophers' Legacy, and more, Liquid then reenergizes Snake with some syringes so they can have one last face-off, using moves from several of the previous Metal Gear titles until they are so exhausted they are just throwing punches at each other until Snake finally overpowers Liquid and beats him. In that moment, Revolver Ocelot resurfaces to be himself in his final moments, telling Snake "you're pretty good" before expiring. Snake is then airlifted back to the Missouri by Otacon as they contemplate what they gained and what they lost by what's happened recently.

Finally, after a very long mission, Snake killed Liquid Ocelot in fighting despite being beaten by the latter's reinforced physique and saved the Earth from the war economy. About to kill himself in front of Big Boss' grave so his FOXDIE wouldn't spread, Big Boss himself stopped his son from doing so. It was explained that he survived their last encounter, Big Boss' corpse was really Solidus Snake's, Ocelot used several tactics to make him simply believe he was Liquid to trick the Patriots, and Big Boss is about to be killed by the new strain of FOXDIE that Drebin had injected Snake with back in the Middle East, which was uprooting the old FOXDIE, thus preventing it from becoming pathological, and was the real reason behind Big Mama and Revolver Ocelot's deaths. About to die, Big Boss tells his son to retire for good, because "the world does not need snakes." After having Snake light his final cigar, Big Boss died on his own grave. Snake quits smoking, retreated with Otacon and Sunny (Otacon's foster daughter) and live enough to see the future he helped to create.
