Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the SEGA franchise that has the same name. He is also SEGA's mascot. Sonic's rival in the gaming industry used to be Mario, but now they are seen as friendly competitors ever since Sega became third party and started releasing their titles for Nintendo systems.
Sonic is a 15-year-old hedgehog known for his fast speed (hence his name), and his laid-back and cocky attitude towards serious situations. His arch-nemesis is Dr. Eggman, an evil scientist who plans to conquer the world. However, much like Mario and Bowser, Sonic always foils his various schemes, no matter how hopeless or dire the situation may be. Sonic's best friend is Miles "Tails" Prower, who at times acts like a little brother to Sonic and aids him in any way he can. Knuckles the Echidna is his another close friend, but was also his first rival, though their rivalry is now much friendlier. Another one of his friends is Amy Rose, who harbours an one-sided crush on him and desires the marry him.
Sonic has also had many voice actors throughout his history. In Japan, Sonic has been voiced by Jun'ichi Kanemaru since 1998. In his first speaking role in Sonic's Schoolhouse, he was voiced by Meg Inglima. In the cartoons, he was voiced by Jaleel White, although in Sonic Underground, his singing voice was provided by Samuel Vincent. From 1999 till 2004, he was voiced by Ryan Drummond. He was later replaced by Jason Griffith, who had previously voiced the character in the English dub of Sonic X and who also voiced Tom on Chaotic. He kept the role until 2010 when he was replaced by Roger Craig Smith, who voiced Sonic until stepping down from the role in 2021; Smith also voices Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series and Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil and Marvel vs. Capcom series since Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. In the 2020 live action movie, he is voiced by Ben Schwartz, who also voices Skidmark in Turbo, Dewey Duck in Ducktales, Randy Cunningham in 9th Grade Ninja and Leonardo in 2018 reboot of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Sonic is the main protagonist in all the games, other than in Shadow the Hedgehog where he is the tritagonist.

Sonic is often shown as a character who wants nothing short of adventure. He absolutely enjoys adventure and goes on one every chance he gets. If nothing interesting is going on, he flat-out bolts. He is always fun-loving and is always trying to make the best of things, and is always willing to help others. He is incredibly determined to do the greater good and is always described as hating evil just as much.
He has an indomitable will, which was showcased multiples times throughout the series. He never holds grudges, and quickly forgives former enemies (an example being Knuckles the Echidna and Silver the Hedgehog), despite their initial encounter.
While he loves adventuring, Sonic has shown moments of relaxing (i.e. taking a nap or sitting down somewhere and enjoying the scenery). Sonic lives in the here and now, never dwelling on the past and just takes it in stride. He really cares about his friends, as he never lets them come to harm's way (via saving Tails or Amy from Dr. Eggman's clutches).
In contrast to his cockiness, Sonic has shown to be modest when it comes to titles, telling Shahra that he was gonna blush (shown in Sonic and the Secret Rings), or in Sonic Advance 2, where he becomes shocked by Cream the Rabbit calling him mister (and because of her politeness). Sonic has a high amount of charisma since many people respect and look up to him.
Sonic is a resident of south island and loves adventure. He has been foes with Eggman for most of his life.
Super Smash Bros
Sonic is introduced in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl where he along with Solid Snake become the first third party characters introduced into a Smash game. In the game's adventure mode, The Subspace Emissary, he stopped Tabuu from transforming the good guys into trophies and helped the rest of the heroes defeat him and restore the world to where it once was.
Sonic returns in the game Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS becoming the series first third party veteran to return in the game.
Sonic returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate along with every character in the series to date. In the World of Light, he tried to escape Galeem's Beam of Light by helping Pikachu, but was vaporized. He must be defeated to be awakened and unlocked.
He along with Tails were infamously a part of a hoax that alleges them as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee though the hoax was eventually proven false, however it was stated the Sonic could of been added in to the game but the plan eventually fell through.
Eggman is sonics greatest foe. He will not stop until Eggman gives up for good.
Mario is Sonic the Hedgehog's friend and rival.
Miles "Tails" Prower is Sonic's best friend and sidekick, as well as his most faithful and loyal friend. Besides Eggman, Tails is one of the figures in Sonic's life who has often shaped his destiny.
Amy Rose is one of Sonic's oldest and most loyal friends, and his self-proclaimed girlfriend.
Metal Sonic is Sonic's robotic alter ego, created by Dr. Eggman for the sole purpose of destroying him.
Knuckles is Sonic's best friend after Tails and one of his closest friends. They have known each other for a long time, but their relationship is somewhat complicated, the two of them having been summed up once as "best frenemies". When Sonic first met Knuckles, they started off as enemies, with Knuckles trying to keep him from stopping the Death Egg's re-launch. However, when they discovered that Dr. Robotnik had tricked Knuckles, the two of them joined forces to keep Robotnik and his robots from stealing the Master Emerald, and they departed on good terms, befriending each other.
Sonic and Knuckles are much like oil and water. While Sonic exemplifies the wind and is laid-back, cool and free, Knuckles exemplifies the mountain and is stern, serious and unmovable, which causes them to argue a lot. Because of their differences and ways of life, they don't understand each other and they don't always see eye to eye. They share a competitive rivalry and they often end up fighting when clashing, though their rivalry has become more friendly over time, being now a more a play between the two. With Sonic's speed equaling Knuckles' strength in every way, their fights are always climactic.
Knuckles sees himself as Sonic's rival, though it has been implied several times it is because be envies Sonic's free lifestyle and self-reliant nature. Sonic meanwhile, always welcomes a challenge from Knuckles and enjoys teasing him for fun because of his serious nature, and will even try getting him angry so he can fight him.
A majority of their confrontations have been caused by Dr. Eggman, who would trick Knuckles into thinking Sonic (and to a minor extent, Tails) is up to unscrupulous activities; though, as time passed, Knuckles has stopped falling for Dr. Eggman's lies and is generally more aware of his deceptions. Whenever Sonic discovers Eggman has tricked Knuckles, he always chides him by calling him "knucklehead", which Knuckles does not take too well, though they always make peace of each other at the end of the day.
Despite their differences, both value their friendship than their rivalry and both are willing to risk their lives for each other. The two of them are connected by a hot-blooded friendship and according to Tails, they are "funny" together. While Sonic doesn't hold back on Knuckles' shortcomings, they deeply acknowledge each other and Sonic knows he can count on him to do what is needed to succeed. Over time, their relationship has improved greatly, though Sonic is still somewhat reluctant to admit when Knuckles is right and he is wrong. While Knuckles at times rebukes his help and claims he could do better, Sonic just rolls with it and is merely glad to help him. The two are also great and loyal teammates, having worked together multiple times, being called "Fighting Buddies" in Sonic Advance 3. For better or worse, Sonic will also be there to give Knuckles needed, if not harsh, consoling whenever he is in doubt. Additionally, in Sonic Lost World, Sonic was crestfallen when he thought Knuckles and the others had died from the Extractor.
Shadow the Hedgehog is Sonic's arch-rival. Shadow is one of Sonic's toughest rivals, as he closely matches Sonic in speed and other abilities, and their fights' outcomes are unpredictable. Shadow's formidability makes him one of the few people Sonic takes seriously.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic and Shadow met as enemies because Shadow unintentionally framed Sonic when he stole a Chaos Emerald. Both claimed the other was copying them, which sparked a rivalry. Seeing Shadow use Chaos Control, Sonic soon learned to utilize the technique himself with a false Chaos Emerald. In their seeming final clash, Shadow soon began to see there was more to Sonic than resembling him as Sonic freely answered his query of him. When the late Prof. Gerald Robotnik's doomsday plan threatened to destroy the planet, Shadow (realizing his true promise to his friend Maria) allied with Sonic. In the final battle with the Final Hazard, Shadow stated that he may have discovered the ultimate lifeform was Sonic, showing how much respect he had grown for him. When Shadow seemed to have perished, Sonic stated Shadow was "a brave and heroic hedgehog", and as he departed the Ark with the others, he uttered "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog" as parting words of respect to his worthy adversary and ally.
Sonic would learn Shadow was actually alive in Sonic Heroes, when his Team Sonic encountered Shadow's Team Dark. Their teams clashed over who would get to Eggman and because of Shadow's amnesia made him believe Sonic was imitating him again, but in the end, they worked together again to defeat the rogue Metal Sonic.
Shadow is basically a polar opposite to Sonic in every way except appearance, and their different morals and views of justice cause them to clash frequently. While Sonic is sociable, free-spirited, and playful with black and white morality, Shadow is aloof, brooding, and violent with a blue and orange morality. While Sonic has some limitations in his goals, Shadow will stop at nothing to get what he wants. While Sonic seems to be becoming faster than Shadow, the black hedgehog seems to be becoming stronger than blue one. They don't care about each other's views and will use their conflicting differences as another reason to fight. In almost every encounter, they have clashed in ferocious and bitter battles. While their rivalry has developed and become more friendly, it's still fierce.
Despite the hostility, there is a mutual respect in their arch-rivalry (prominently shown in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)), and more than once have they joined forces for the greater good. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow's duo and Sonic's trio worked together to return to their proper time period, with them even admitting they had to. Later on, Shadow would be the one to save Sonic from Silver the Hedgehog's second attempt on his life, with Sonic silently giving him a thumbs up as a sign of gratitude. Shadow showed slight vulnerability at Sonic's death at the hands of Mephiles the Dark, and stated that they would have stood a chance against Solaris if Sonic was alive. Shadow join in the search for the Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic.
Overall, while they will go into intense battles, they will become steadfast allies to save the world, becoming an unbeatable team together, and acknowledge each other as heroes in their own right.
In recent games, Shadow is more confident in Sonic doing what is right while Sonic is more acceptant of Shadow's violent nature.
Cream the Rabbit is Sonic's close friend, who is basically like a younger sister to him.
Blaze the Cat is one of Sonic's friends and most valuable allies.
Sonic and Silver the Hedgehog first met during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
Chip is a dear and good friend to Sonic.
Jet the Hawk is Sonic's rival in speed.
The Deadly Six are some of the worst and hated enemies Sonic has ever faced; they are the one of the few enemies who has caused Sonic to lose cool and laid-back attitude with his enemies.
Infinite is Sonic's enemy.
Avatar is Sonic's friend.
