Sonic the Hedgehog, simply known as Sonic, is the titular main protagonist of the franchise of the same name and the mascot of the video game company Sega.
He first appeared in the original Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) where he is introduced as a 15-year-old heroic blue hedgehog, born with his main power and ability to run super speed (hence his name), which allows him to move at the incredible supersonic speeds, by running and traveling faster than the speed of sound, and possesses his lightning-fast agility and reflexes to match his speed. Sonic can primarily attack his enemies by curling into a concussive ball called Spin Attack, and he is laid-back and cocky with a big attitude towards serious situations and is mostly heroically brave and fearless.
His arch-nemesis is Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, an evil scientist who frequently plans to conquer the world. However, Sonic always foils Eggman's various schemes, no matter how hopeless or dire the situation may seem to become. Sonic's best friend is Miles "Tails" Prower, who at times acts like a little brother to Sonic and aids him in any way he can during their many adventures. Knuckles the Echidna is another close friend, but was also his rival, though their rivalry is now much friendlier. Another one of his friends is Amy Rose, who harbors a crush on him.
Following his first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic became SEGA's mascot, and his iconic rival in the gaming industry used to be Mario, the mascot of Nintendo, but now they are seen as friendly competitors ever since Sega became third party and started releasing Sonic games for Nintendo systems. Mario and Sonic even had their very own crossover series where they compete in the Olympic Games.

Sonic has also had many voice actors throughout his history. In Japanese, Sonic has been voiced Takeshi Kusao in Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car and SegaSonic the Hedgehog, then by Jun'ichi Kanemaru since Sonic Adventure in 1998 and also voiced Henry the Green Engine from Thomas & Friends franchise.
In English, his first speaking role in Sonic's Schoolhouse, he was voiced by Meg Inglima. From Sonic Adventure to Sonic Advance 3, he was voiced by Ryan Drummond. He was next voiced by Jason Griffith from Shadow the Hedgehog to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, who previously voiced the character in the English dub of Sonic X, and also voiced Shadow the Hedgehog and Jet the Hawk in the same franchise, as well as Tom Majors on Chaotic. Sonic is currently voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who has taken the role since Sonic Colors, who also currently voices E-123 Omega in the same franchise, another version of himself in the Sonic Boom series, Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series, Nikolai in Regular Show, Batman in Batman Arkham Origins and Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil, and Marvel vs. Capcom series since Resident Evil 5.
Appearance[]
Sonic is a slim anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur that covers most of his body, and peach skin that covers his arms, muzzle, insides of his ears and front torso. He has small, triangular ears on top of his head, six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back behind his shoulders, and a short tail. For attire, Sonic wears red boots with a white strap, cuff and gold buckle each; and a pair of white gloves with sock-like cuffs on the hands.
Back when he was younger, up until the Chaos incident, Sonic was shorter and stubbier, had a round head and an equally round torso, and black eyes. Following said crisis, he has grown taller and thinner, and developed green eyes. Prior to the Neo Metal Sonic incident, he was also often shown to have peach-skinned eyelids, until they eventually were portrayed as blue as well.
In Sonic Prime, because of Nine's (a Tails from a alternate universe) Regulators, Sonic's attire varies. He currently wears sleek red sneakers with white tongues and white accents and glowing blue highlights. His gloves gain grey highlights and strap-like cuffs. In Boscage Maze, his shoes and gloves are green, themed after camouflage. In No Place, his shoes are yellow, and his gloves are brown. Finally, in The Grim, his shoes are silver.
Overview[]
Sonic is a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog with attitude and plenty of personality who lives up to his name by being able to run at superhuman speeds. One day on South Island, he noticed all of his animal buddies began disappearing, and the culprit was none other than Dr. Eggman.
After foiling the doc's plans, Sonic would then make it his business to do in whatever evil plan the doctor cooked up, establishing their long rivalry. Over time, Sonic has faced bigger and larger threats alike while making a whole slew of allies along the way.
Sonic is described as like the wind; unpredictable, and always moving from place to place and never settling down for long. Laid-back, carefree, and armed with a wit as sharp as his quills with an ego to match. He also has a compassionate side and deep down, a heart of gold that always wishes the best for others.
Powers and Abilities[]
Sonic the Hedgehog's years of battle have made him a master, self-taught, skilled, powerful fighter, and a champion of peace, ever since his never-ending battles with his arch-enemy, Dr. Eggman, despite not having undergone any known training. Sonic has defeated Dr. Eggman, giant robots, demons, god-like beings, and his rivals on his own; gone up against those with far more combat experience; and even beaten individuals who equally match his speed. It has also been stated and most evident showing Sonic is steadily growing stronger; during the Time Eater incident (Sonic Generations), Sonic beats Perfect Chaos on his own where he had previously required the power of the super form to beat him. He even told Infinite upon holding his own against him, compared to the previous time they fought, Sonic becomes more powerful every second. This confirms that Sonic is far more powerful than he lets on.
His victories over Emerl at the Gizoid’s maximum potential and Perfect Chaos in his base form are prime examples of his true power. Regardless of his blocks and his countless size, Sonic ranks amongst the most powerful characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Powers[]
- Superhuman Speed: Sonic's main trademark and greatest strength, is his super speed. He has proven himself the most powerful and highly skilled to be in class of his trademark super speed, the most innate talent that the blue hedgehog has ever possesses, Sonic has been nicknamed and credited as the best and well-known as "the fastest thing alive", “the world fastest supersonic hedgehog”, or just simply as “the world’s fastest hedgehog”, and he has proven even as the fastest being in the universe. Sonic had the power and ability to instantly run at super speed, and can accelerate more faster than the speed of sound by moving at supersonic speeds that exceeded in Mach 1, which is at the blistering speed of about 768 mph, and can run backward just as well as he can forwards. Due to such speed, Sonic can scale vertical surfaces and ceilings, run over water, outspeed lasers, run through Dr. Eggman’s robots by knocking them out, and even cause the ground to explode and lift off in his wake. Even then, Sonic can take his speed even further; by revving up in one place, he can take off at turbo speeds in an instant, speeding up, and can run at supersonic speeds called Mach Speed. He can also envelop himself in a blue energy field called the Sonic Boost, a powerful supersonic speed projectile that allows him to run and accelerate at full supersonic speeds, allowing him to smash straight through his enemies, destroying them and can also smash against the other obstacles that are in his way, in a beyond the sound barrier on both the ground and in midair for a short time; he can use the other similar variant version of his Sonic Boost which is called the Sonic Boom, that allows him to dash at his enemies at supersonic speed by drawing up wind around him, before using it to launch himself forward with a burst of speed so great that it breaks the sound barrier, and can also use another variant of his Boost, by using his Soul Gauge that allows him to boost with the most destructible speed called the Speed Break which allows him accelerate to such speeds that he creates a sonic boom, while streaks of fire are released in his slipstream. Sonic can also create afterimages of himself as he enters in super-speed/hyper-speed mode allowing him to surpass his regular running super speed as he can run and move faster than the speed of sound. Sonic had the power of his super speed, not only by smashing straight through his enemies or the obstacles like a living projectile, but is able to fly at immense distances through midair at high speed. Using his certain techniques, Sonic can achieve light-speed momentarily at the speed of light such as Light Speed Attack and Light Speed Dash. Sonic can control his trademark super speed as shown; he can easily attack and dodge robots with his incredible speed and his enhanced agility, jump, reflexes, and mobility.
- Superhuman Agility and Reflexes: Sonic possesses astounding kineticism and precision, and has the reaction time to match his speed. He has profoundly enhanced acrobatic skills and enhanced agility, along with incredible lightning-fast reflexes that lets him avoid any incoming obstacles with precise and delicate movements, and dodges. As seen in his first meeting and first fight with Silver the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic can even detect attacks beyond his field of vision due to his sharp reflexes. When launched into the air, he can also pull off several tricks before landing. Sonic also has incredible enhanced jumping skills, capable of jumping up to several hundred meters, even with extra weight.
- Superhuman Stamina: Sonic has demonstrated complete mastery of his speed in any other environment and can use it for both high-speed offense and defense. Not only can he run at maximum tilt in straight lines, but he can also run in full tight circles and can go through sharp turns with full control over his momentum. Sonic’s speed allows him to run more at greater speeds, as far as his enhanced stamina goes, Sonic's powers and abilities of his trademark super speed, is seemingly limitless and more immense, as he is never winded from running.
- Superhuman Strength: Sonic possesses his enhanced strength. He can push and lift things bigger and heavier than himself, run without extra weight slowing him down, smash through Eggman’s robots, metal and rock, and damage his powerful foes. His strength is shown as Sonic overwhelms Eggman’s pilot transport vehicle called Egg Mobile, and his giant robots; Death Egg Robot, Big Arms, Giant Eggman Robo, Egg Viper, Egg-Cerberus, Egg-Genesis, Egg-Wyvern, Egg Dragoon, and god-like monsters; Chaos, Biolizard, Iblis, Solaris, Ifrit, Dark Gaia, and Mist Dragon countless times his size. It is unknown how to determine whether Sonic’s power comes from his speed, strength, agility, or combination of both. Sonic's strength particularly lies in his legs; with a single kick, he can knock out entire Egg Gunners, and can topple the Egg Golem and send Badniks flying. This does not mean that Sonic's arms are not strong either; he has enough strength to tear those robots apart with his bare hands, Sonic can punch through Egg Fighters as he dashes through them with his speed, he can even punch through collapsed wall. Sonic is strong and powerful enough to routinely trades blows with the tremendously strong Knuckles the Echidna, and is considered as equals with the similarly powerful Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic's signature spinning maneuvers can easily smash through obstacles, and he has demolished a mountain top with chains durable enough to hold the little planet in place. Sonic's arms are very powerful too; He can smash and defeat the hordes of large robots and other powerful enemies with his fist, and can throw a small rock with his supersonic speeds.
- Superhuman Sense: Sonic's quills can sense nearby dangers, which they warn him about by creating a tingling sensation. A similar precognitive ability of his that allows him to sense nearby danger comes in the form of sneezing. Sonic has also demonstrated the ability to transfer his speed throughout various parts of his body, allowing him to immediately set off from stationary positions and even channel it into objects to speed up their movements and make them pierce through solid objects as he does while running.
- Superhuman Durability Sonic has frequently demonstrated extreme resilience to damage thanks to his enhanced durability. He can survive getting caught in the crossfire from all angles by Eggman's robots (which only knocked him out cold briefly), withstand the force of a massive explosion and a Hyper-go-on-based void unscathed, being pummeled with swords, in the Angel Island incident, Sonic is able to resist a powerful punch from Knuckles the Echidna from his foot, smash through several robots with his fist without discomfort, and take a ruthless pummeling from the Time Eater. Additionally, Sonic has more than once survived impacts from falls at extreme heights, bordering at the edge of space, only to shake it off when landing, and has even withstood atmospheric entry.
- Spin Attack: Sonic's main trademark and core offensive maneuver is his Spin Attack, a powerful technique where he curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk and directs himself at his targets. With it, Sonic can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed and hit with enough force against his enemies and to pierce colossal boulders. Highly adept in its usage, Sonic can utilize his several trademark variants of the Spin Attack for both grounded and aerial maneuvers, including Spin Jump, Spin Dash, Homing Attack, Light Speed Attack, the super-charged Focused Homing Attack, and Drop Dash: Sonic can use his Spin Attack to perform Spin Jump; that allows him to jump and perform a mid-air Spin Attack while jumping high and spinning at the same time and can also use it to destroy enemies while jumping in mid-air, Sonic can use his Spin Dash; that allows Sonic to master a revving spin attack by crouching down and curl up to spinning charging ball rapidly from a standard position before blasting off at high speed rolling attack, Sonic can use his Homing Attack; which allows Sonic to perform a Spin Attack in a mid-air and launch his lock-on targets to strike his enemies nearby, Sonic would use his Homing Attack to perform a Light Speed Attack; which allows him to attack within range at the speed of light, making it the most powerful version of his Homing Attack combined, Sonic can also perform a Focused Homing Attack; which is similar to Sonic's original Light Speed Attack technique that allows him to immediately lock-on to multiple enemies to strike them up to six at once, Sonic can also use a new version of his Spin Dash called Drop Dash; that allows him to jump and a perform a rapid spinning ball in a mid-air before landing on a ground and blast off at the incredible high speeds.
- Chaos Control: Sonic has also demonstrated the ability to harness Chaos Emerald energy for his own use; with a Chaos Emerald, Sonic can perform the chaos power; Chaos Control, and occasionally gain a boost in power.
- Time Travel: Sonic has the interesting ability to travel through time in Sonic CD by using Time Warp Posts. He does this by gaining speed and maintaining it when passing one, which causes flashes of light to come out of his body before warping to the past or the future.
- Mental Link: After Mecha Sonic attempted to switch his mind with Sonic's own on Scrapnik Island, Sonic began to hear the thoughts of the robot and feel its emotions. He used this to sympathize with Mecha Sonic and help it better itself. Sonic has only shown this ability in the IDW Publishing comic series and is unknown if he still retains it.
- Prismatic Energy: In the Netflix series Sonic Prime, One of the most mysterious powers that he has gained after shattering the Paradox Prim is being able to travel between shatterspaces, something which can happen with or without needing to touch a Prism Shard. In order for Sonic to travel shatterspaces without a shard, he must be able to accumulate enough speed to open a small portal through whatever shatterspace he's in. This portal will send him into the void which houses the gateways to each shatterspace. After being given regulators from Nine, Sonic's gloves and shoes also adapt to the terrain of the shatterspace he is in. In Boscage Maze, his glove and shoes can sprout out claws that allow him to climb surfaces and be used as weapons, in No Place, his shoes act as hovercrafts that allow him to walk on water, and in The Grim, his shoes can create a hexagonal path that allow him to run in midair and create a hexagon shield. Nine later upgrades Sonic's regulators so he can communicate with the fox and not be instantly sent to the void after touching a Prism Shard.
Abilities[]
- Hand-To-Hand Combat Skills/Martial Arts: Even without using his Spin Attack, Sonic is a master and skilled hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist. He mostly relies on his fast footwork since the majority of his power lies in his legs, although he has been known to use his fists and arms too, albeit in a rather straightforward manner. Sonic is able to engage his opponents on his own with his incredible full hand-to-hand combat skills and martial art skills with his speed and intensity against his rivals and other several opponents; Sonic is able to match his speed against his friendly rival, Knuckles the Echidna, who is the stronger combatant as Sonic's speed is able to match against Knuckles' strength very equally in combat, Sonic engages his fight against his robotic doppelgänger and his first rival, Metal Sonic, who can copy Sonic's speed and other techniques, Sonic is also able to match his speed against his look-alike, Shadow the Hedgehog, who is the only one who is shown equal to Sonic's powers and abilities but neither of them are outmatched as they withstand in equal combat, Sonic is capable of fighting against Silver the Hedgehog, who only relies on his psychokinesis in combat in which Sonic easily defeats him by foot sweeping him in the leg. When fighting Emerl, who copies Sonic's abilities, Sonic quickly overpowers him in hand-to-hand combat in seconds, Sonic even beats Zavok in close combat in a final showdown.
- Fighting Style: Sonic’s fighting style is mostly derived from break-dancing attack moves which utilize Sonic's legs to their fullest, allowing him to deliver swift and wide-ranged kicks such as using his similar martial art move called Capoeira. Sonic uses his hand-to-hand combat skills and martial art skills to perform his punching and kicking before unleashing his powerful delivery blows, more several blows, fast-spinning kicks, and final blows at his opponents. He may not be the material of strength, but Sonic makes up for it in speed in combat, which Sonic use to deliver lightning-fast strike attacks in a short time. Sonic has also been known to use flying forward kicks, split kicks, and scissor kicks. Sonic was also shown during the scabbard of Excalibur incident to excel in swordsmanship. Even as a rookie swordsman, Sonic could beat a dragon and after receiving formal training, he could best master swordsmen like the Knights of the Round Table. In addition to using advanced techniques, Sonic can apply his speed to his swordplay for quick and swift slashes, and become a buzzsaw by spinning with his sword, enabling him to slice clean through several enemies. Sonic has also learned the martial art of Lin Shao Kung Fu, though he is yet to be seen using it. Sonic is also shown in Sonic Frontiers to be able to defeat his enemies, using his full quick hand-to-hand combat and martial art attacks, powerful barrages, and homing attacks. For his more powerful attacks, Sonic uses his Spin Attacks, Spin Dashes, and Homing Attacks. Sonic applies his various martial arts and techniques to attack his opponents. Many of his techniques are based on his Capoeira movements and break-dancing attack movements, in this way Sonic can launch strong and powerful punches and kicks. Many of Sonic's fighting moves are based on hedgehogs' tendency to roll up into a ball for protection; he can use it to attack his many enemies. Since Sonic’s first appearance in the first and original Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) up until then, Sonic's main offensive maneuver is the Spin Attack which he attacks mostly whenever he runs or jumps. Sonic coils and spins into a spiky ball with which he can break, move or crush enemies or obstacles. In the following games he would use other attacks based on his main attack. Two of his new attack versions of Spin Attack would soon become his main attacks: the Spin Dash introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the Homing Attack, which was officially introduced in Sonic Adventure. Sonic’s combat skills made him a more experienced and powerful fighter that he can defeat more enemies with his mix of his trademark speed, spin attacks, and combat skills.
- Indomitable Will: Sonic possesses an indomitable force of his indomitable will, which he has been possessing his unbreakable and incorruptible spirit; in situations where most others would give up and where he is severely outnumbered and outgunned, Sonic never loses faith in himself and never surrenders. This trait enables him to keep on fighting when utterly exhausted or after taking an abnormal amount of damage. His indomitable strong will even let him withstand mind-controlling powers, like the corruptive influence of Dark Gaia. Even when possessed by the Ifrit, Sonic was arguably able to occasionally regain control.
- Driving Expert: Sonic has extraordinary skill in operating vehicles. He has excellent skills at piloting a plane called Tornado which he originally owns, although he leaves it to Miles “Tails” Prower who is a skilled pilot, and Sonic is shown capable of water bike surfing on vessels like the Wave Cyclone. He is also experienced in a variation of sports such as boarding and surfing, and other recreational activities like grinding. As shown during Dodon Pa’s Grand Prix, Sonic is also an expert at driving sport cars such as his original vehicle called Cyclone, and his frequent main vehicle which is none other than Speed Star. He has even demonstrated that he is capable of driving his car sideways and backwards just as well as he can forwards at full speed, and can be able to keep up with other expert drivers like Shadow the Hedgehog while driving from these directions.
- Extreme Gear Rider: Sonic has proven himself as a world-class Extreme Gear rider capable of riding on his Blue Star. He is said to move faster than he can run on an Extreme Gear and can go head-to-head with the legendary Wind Masters like Jet the Hawk. Sonic seemingly has a knack for Extreme Gear riding, quickly grasping the controls on his first try and later developing advanced techniques despite being self-taught. After the second World Grand Prix, Sonic can be considered the best Extreme Gear rider in the world, having beaten Metal Sonic in a race, who at that point was an "unbeatable" rider with the skills of the world's finest Extreme Gear riders at his disposal.
Transformation[]
- Super Sonic: By using the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can enter a Super State that gives him the ability to transform him into a most powerful god-like golden-yellow super form called Super Sonic. Easily one of his most powerful forms and his frequently used transformations, Super Sonic is one of Sonic's main strongest and current forms. In this transformation, all of Sonic's powers and abilities far surpass his normal ones; his trademark super speed increases more powerful and more faster that he can freely run at such speeds and fly at speeds, his incredible strength increases so powerful that he can defeat powerful enemies, he has more enhanced agility, and Sonic’s hand-to-hand combat skills increase more greatly in punching and kicking in this form and can outmatch his enemies at few seconds in close combat. This transformation has also grant him godly-powers; He had the ability to fly at high speeds as he combines his powers and abilities with his similar techniques to increase their size and power; which is that he can use his Super Sonic Boost, the enhanced version of his Sonic Boost, to fly at greater speeds, and is nearly invulnerable. However, there is a drawback, as his transformation consumes a lot of Ring Energy, meaning it cannot be maintained for long.
- Super Sonic 2: In Sonic Frontiers, after Sonic clears all the trails set of him by the Master King and achieves mastery over his Cyber Corruption, Sonic can power up his Super transformation even further to become Super Sonic 2. In this state, Super Sonic's abilities are further enhanced.
- Super Sonic Cyber: A extremely powerful form that Sonic achieves when he lets loose the full power of his Cyber Corruption while in his "Super Sonic 2" state. Sonic briefly uses this form to destroy The End which seemingly depletes the energy of his Cyber Corruption and presumably prevents him from becoming Super Sonic 2 or Super Sonic Cyber again.
- Hyper Sonic: By using the power of the seven Super Emeralds, Sonic can achieve an extended and more powerful multi-colored form of Super Sonic called Hyper Sonic. This form basically shares the same traits as Super Sonic, except Hyper Sonic commands greater power and all of his Super State abilities are greatly enhanced, with it, he can achieve light speed and agility movements and commands his incredible strength to smash through walls. He can even perform a flash and devastating attack that destroys almost anything in his way and, depending on its usage, allows him to gain more speed or height which allows him to achieve at greater lightspeeds, and just like his Super Sonic form, he also has the ability to fly at great speeds.
- Hyper Mode: A enhanced variant of the super transformation. Sonic is capable of using this mode for a brief time on his own by drawing power from the Chaos Emeralds. In Hyper Mode, Sonic's speed, strength, agility, and power are greatly increased.
- Darkspine Sonic: By using the power of the World Rings of rage, hatred, and sadness, Sonic can undergo a transformation into the darker and indigo demonic form version of himself called Darkspine Sonic. He had the ability to fly in this state, and has greater speed, strength, agility, and unlimited usage of his Soul Gauge powers and as well elemental abilities over flames, wind and darkness and also a demonstrated profound and brutal form of hand-to-hand combat, being capable of delivering powerful punches and kicks in rapid succession. In this form, Sonic can create concentrated flames on his hands and feet to create destructive force behind his attacks and form miniature, yet powerful explosions of flames, and can perform Speed Break and Time Break. However, because of the intense emotions sealed inside the World Rings that Sonic uses to transform, he becomes slightly darker and more violent.
- Excalibur Sonic: By using the power of the four sacred swords, Sonic is able to transform into a golden-yellow knight form called Excalibur Sonic. This form grants Sonic a strong golden armor with a red cape, the ability to fly, and has greater speed, strength and the power to wield the legendary sacred sword Excalibur. He had increased strength, allowing him to deflect massive sword strikes from powerful enemies with an ease, and the ability to fly at great speed. In addition, Sonic retains his skills in swordsmanship, allowing him to parry the crushing sword strikes and deflect projectiles with just Excalibur and use his ultimate advance attack. He also gains increased acrobatic skills and reflexes that enables him to make spinning rolls in midair to avoid attacks.
- Sonic the Werehog: After unwillingly absorbing the corruptive energies of Dark Gaia, Sonic gained the power to turn into a werewolf-like form named Sonic the Werehog at nighttime. In this state, Sonic gains his speed (but just physical speed), and still gains his lightning reflexes and agility, but his super speed was exchanged for his enhanced speed instead, meaning that he can run in all four at physical speed. He also gains super strength, sharp claws, extendable arms, and limited energy control, and has a feral moves of combat techniques and abilities of his ferocious, devastating, and powerful attacks. While his strong will prevents him from becoming fully corrupt like most others would, Sonic does gain some minor feral behavior. He permanently lost this form when the energy that granted him his Werehog form was re-absorbed by Dark Gaia.
- Color Powers: By harnessing different variants of Hyper-go-on from Wisps, Sonic is able to use the most specific Color Powers to transform into a certain form, such as a drill, a laser or even a fireball, each one possessing its own unique abilities. So far, Sonic has been able to transform into the Cyan Laser, Yellow Drill, Blue Cube, Green Hover, Pink Spikes, Purple Frenzy, Violet Void, Orange Rocket, Red Burst, Indigo Asteroid, Magenta Rhythm, Crimson Eagle, Ivory Lightning, Gray Quake, Black Bomb, and Jade Ghost. However, these transformations require a steady supply of Hyper-go-on to be maintained.
- Shatter Sonic: A transformation of sorts that Sonic gains by harnessing Prismatic Energy from shards of the Paradox Prism.

Trivia[]
- He is the first ever hero to be headlined!
- Although he rarely spoke in the 1990s save for two early arcade games, the comics and animated media, he was first voiced by Jaleel White, who is known for voicing him in the original Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons like in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog television series, and last being Sonic Underground. However, White is nearly the first ever voice actor of the character, Takeshi Kusao was his very first voice actor starting in Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car which was one year before AoStH's pilot episode was produced that first casted Jaleel White as the character.
- One of the few things that can actually scare Sonic is an enraged Amy chasing him with her Piko Piko Hammer.
- His Sega World Sydney artwork, Sonic Boom and movie counterparts have blue arms (as opposed to flesh colored).
- In the original cartoon, there were also occasions where his arms are incorrectly colored blue.
- Despite water being his biggest weakness in the vast majority of continuities, he was perfectly able to swim in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Sonic Colors is the only canon game in which Sonic can swim, although it's portrayed as him jumping infinitely.
- Curiously, the creator of Sonic thought that hedgehogs couldn't swim, but actually they can swim, so it was his mistake to think that Sonic couldn't either (but it still stays in because it will be a big problem to change something established).
- There is a genome named "Sonic hedgehog" after the character.
- Sonic likes to use cars and vehicles to run on races, but he does not need them to be fast.
- Every time Sonic appears in a band, he is either playing the guitar, or a Disc Jockey.
- At one point in Sonic Unleashed, Eggman called Sonic a "hedge-pig". This may be a reference to the fact that "pig" can be synonymous with "hog" and "hedgepig" means "hedgehog" in Shakespearean language.
- In 1993, Sonic was the first video game character to be seen in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
- In 2011, a second balloon based off of Sonic's modern design appeared in the Thanksgiving Day Parade to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary.
- His favorite food is chili dogs.
- According to Takashi Iizuka, Sonic's eyes are connected.
- He along with Tails were infamously a part of a hoax that alleges them as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee though the hoax was eventually proven false, however it was stated the Sonic could have been added in to the game but the plan eventually fell through.
- Sonic makes his appearance in Ready Player One. He can also be briefly seen waiting in line for access to a portal in the OASIS. Sonic is also being seen during the final battle in the OASIS.
- He was born on Christmas Island.
- He lives on a planet named Mobius, although the name was not used by Japanese sources save for Sonic Spinball, his planet is usually referred as Earth or Sonic's planet. the name was originally used in the western manuals for the original games and later in the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics and cartoons. While being rarely used since the early 2000's, it was also used in the live action films (albeit unmentioned, likely due to the Sega Mandates, though it was apparently intended to be mentioned in the second film according to an early storyboard, which was used in the sequel's novelization) were his original homeplanet is actually named Mobius, interestingly enough. In some media, his planet Mobius is a future version of Earth, such as in the Archie comics.
- Sonic is a nomad, something which was reaffirmed in Tailstube #4 when Amy says that Sonic does not have a home. He probably just moves constantly and only stays temporarily in certain places, but never has a home.
- Unlike Mario, Sonic has many more versions of himself in media, not only from official Sonic material, but also from crossovers.
- Sonic's favorite sport is baseball.
- Despite Sonic being a male, and a young adult, and often being voiced by a male voice actor, in some non-canonical media that is targeted towards younger audiences like the educational game Sonic's Schoolhouse and the Sonic in Sydney live shows from the mid-late 1990s, he was voiced by a female voice actor rather than a male, making him sound like a female, a young boy, or young teenager. They were however doing an impression similar to Whites version of the character. And in some dubs, specifically Asian ones of the original cartoons, Sonic was also voiced by a female actor.
- Sonic and Mario are best known for their friendly-rivalry and friendship, and they always get along with each other.
- Sonic remembers the events of 2006, considering that in the Japanese version of Team Sonic Racing, he says that Silver when they first meet he was saying things like: I will destroy you! but Silver does not remember that. It's implied, that Sonic mocks low popularity and rankings of this game.
- To celebrate Sonic's 30th birthday, he officially became a virtual YouTuber, voiced by his official Japanese voice actor Jun'ichi Kanemaru.
- Sonic's favorite anime is Sonic X, as revealed in the "Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter Takeover #4". Ironically, it is a show that recounts his adventures. This could imply that Sonic is aware that there are alternate versions of himself, considering that the shows and comics take place in the same multiverse.
- Although Sonic is still 15 years old, this is contradicted multiple times as it is said that years have passed. In the Sonic Colors manual where it is said that Eggman took years to build his interstellar park, Infinite says that Sonic has beaten Eggman for decades, or that Amy is older than her classic version. All this would make him theorically much older (although the part with Infinite could be interpreted as him breaking the fourth wall as they technically fought for decades in real world time).
- Sonic, in the visual novel The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, wears clothes with no pants, meaning that while he will not wear pants, that does not mean he will not wear any kind of clothes.
- Originally, by the time of the release of the original game, Sega of America had little to no exposure of Sonic's original Japanese design, his Western box art design, despite being largely the same as the former, has notable changes of a mohawk-like single row of spines on his head as opposed to three rows, a two-spined single row down his back as opposed to two single-spine rows, and lacking a visible tail and shinier blue fur. This design would even be carried over into the original Sonic cartoons and the first eleven issues of the Archie Comics, it was also adapted for the first eleven issues of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.
- This mowhawk style was later referenced by his live action counterpart, when he was fooling around and making messes while throwing a personal party at home, messing with his quills through alternate quill-styles till he found a style he liked, being a mohawk.
- His pose seen on the box art of the original Sonic game may have been referenced by his classic counterparts 3D artwork, as he is doing a similar pose, pointing his finger and facing to the viewer albeit mirrored. Not only just that, its possible that Classic Sonics design (in Sonic Generations) was partially based off his one seen on the American covers due to his swifting ears and a glabella line in between his frowning conjoined eyes and visible brow ridges.
- In addition, its also been claimed here that this design of Sonic was based off his title screen sprite seen in the Sonic the Hedgehog Tokyo Toy Show demo build from 1990 due to the shade of blue.
- Original media such as the Early Sonic Canon would show that he was originally a brown hedgehog that would meet a polite and respected scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor (who would transform into Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Eggman) showing how his fur turned blue from brown via running on it to pass the time, he eventually broke the sound barrier, crossing all known limits of acceleration and moving at the speed of light. These backstories have however been scrapped entirely due to the North American Sonic Canon being abandoned since the release of Sonic Adventure 2.
- And in some continuities, Sonic was originally an evil hedgehog known as Cinos (Sonic spelled backwards just like Robotnik spelled backwards as Kintobor), but was turned good by Kintobor, who was turned evil himself.
- The detailed design of Sonic was aimed to be something that could be easily drawn by children and be familiar, as well as exhibit a "cool" attitude, representative of the United States at the time. Sonic's blue pigmentation was chosen to match Sega's cobalt blue logo, and his shoes evolved from a design inspired by both Santa Claus and Michael Jackson's boots with the addition of the color red, which was inspired by the contrast of those colors on Jackson's 1987 album Bad; his personality was based on then-presidential candidate and later President of the United States Bill Clinton's "Get it done" attitude during the 1992 presidential campaign.
- The character is claimed by many to be more popular in Anglosphere than in Japan, its being said that he is not that popular in Japan unlike Mario. Alongside the other main characters, he is also referred as fans to be more of an American character than Japanese or otherwise Japanese American, since many Sonic media like the cartoons and comics are produced in Western regions such as mainly the US and the UK, similar thing goes to other Japanese video game characters like Mario and Pac-Man.
- To help sell the idea to Sega's higher-ups, Ohshima pitched the concept framed by a fictional fighter pilot that had earned the name "Hedgehog" due to his spiky hair, and had decorated his plane with images of Sonic. When this pilot retired, he married a children's book author, who wrote stories about the Sonic character, the first which became the plot for the first Sonic game; Ohshima stated that this influence can be seen in the logo of the game, which features Sonic in a pilot's wing emblem.
- Sonic and Shadow are the only characters in the franchise to use the word, "hell."
- In the DC X Sonic the Hedgehog crossover comics, when The Flash first encounters Sonic the Hedgehog, he mistakes him for Krakkl, a DC Comic's character and ally of The Flash Family who is seemingly based off Sonic the Hedgehog.
