~ Sonic talking to Dr. Robotnik while being chased by him and being introduced in the US promotional comic. |
Sonic the Hegdehog is the main protagonist of early western lore of Sonic the Hedgehog media.
By the time of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, they had little to no exposure of Sonic's original Japanese design, while the appearence is relativley the same as the orginal, some big changes to Sonic's design were done too, such as a shinier blue colour for his fur, sharper eyes, a brow in between his eyes, and a mohawk-like hairstyle which all went used in the western box art releases for the original games (designed by artist Greg James Martin who also did a similar thing for other video game and television series artworks in the West such as changing the designs in said region from Japanese video games). They even developed a new canon under the name as the Sonic Bible, a collection of internal documents detailing the supposed backstory of the game. Notably, these documents established things nowhere to be seen in Japanese sources, such his home planets name being called ''Mobius''(which would also be reused in other Western media such as the cartoons and comics and far later on in the 2020 live action film), these versions of the character's backstory state that he was originally a brown hedgehog who would encounter and befriend a kindly scientist named Ovi Kintobor who would transform into the evil Dr. Robotnik via a laboratory accident. They also appeared to contain information that were never used again after that, the first draft stated Sonic was a normal hedgehog living in Nebraska with his mother and five sisters, and that his true name was Sonny Hedgehog. However, all of these changes and backstorys were slowly abandoned as time moved on, causing the Japanese canon to began to be adopted worldwide.
This version of Sonic was used as the base for majority of the western Sonic media, such as as the first 11 issues of the Archie comics, Sonic the Comic, and the original cartoons such as the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), and Sonic Underground.
Appearance[]
Sonic's design is relativley the same as the original Japanese design, however, the major notable changes are that he has a shinier blue colour for his fur, sharper eyes, a brow in between his eyes, and a mohawk-like hairstyle. In most Western Sonic products throughout the 1990's, all of this stayed the same.

Trivia[]
- Originally, unlike in the United States, the box art of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) in European regions such as the United Kingdom was actually given the Japanese design of Sonic, alongside Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. As for the release for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), this was quickly changed to their American designs.
- His pose seen on the box art of the original Sonic game may have been referenced by his classic counterpart's 3D artwork as he is doing a similar pose, pointing his finger and facing to the viewer albeit mirrored.
- Not only just that, its possible that Classic Sonics design (in Sonic Generations) was partially based off his one seen on the American covers due to his swifting ears and a glabella line in between his frowning conjoined eyes and visible brow ridges.
- Its also been claimed here that this design of Sonic was based off his title screen sprite seen in the Sonic the Hedgehog Tokyo Toy Show demo build from 1990 due to the shade of blue.
- His mowhawk style was later referenced by his live action counterpart, when he was fooling around and making messes while throwing a personal party at home, messing with his quills through alternate quill-styles till he found a style he liked, being a mohawk.
- In the Vigin Books continuity, Sonic and Tails inadvertently altered Sonic's origin by exposing the hedgehog's past self to the same incident that created Robotnik, turning him into an evil hedgehog known as Cinos (Sonic backwards, just like Robotnik's real name Kintobor being the latter backwards), but the timeline was seemingly corrected when Sonic managed to absorb Cinos by touching him, as he was a temporal duplicate.
