Sophia Leonides is the deuteragonist of Agatha Christie's novel The Crooked House.

She was portrayed by Stefanie Martini in the 2017 film adaptation.

Biography[]

Sophia is Charles Hayward's fiancée. She goes on dates with him, but he is forced to go to war, so he suggests that she freeze their relationship so that she does not worry about him if something happens to him. Sofia agrees and tells him where she can be found if he wants to look for her. After the war ends, Charles finds her, but she is in mourning. Her grandfather, Aristide Leonides, recently passed away. However, death is very strange. Aristide was a diabetic, and instead of insulin, someone injected him with a medicine for his eyesight. The police are investigating the incident to see whether it was foul play or not. Sofia asks Charles to help her, because his father is a policeman. Charles agrees. All family members suspect that the murder (if it was a murder) was committed by Aristide's new wife Brenda or Sophia's siblings' tutor named Lawrence (however, deep down, no one believes it). Everyone tends to believe that Brenda and Lawrence are having an affair. This is later confirmed. Someone is also trying to kill Sofia's twelve-year-old sister Josephine. She is taken to the hospital, and Brenda and Lawrence are arrested. However, at this time someone tries to poison Josephine, but her nanny dies. Josephine refuses to say what she knows. Her great-aunt Edith takes Josephine for a ride in the car. However, the car soon gets into an accident. Josephine and Edith die. Soon, from Edith's letter and Josephine's notebook, it turns out that it was Josephine who killed Aristide and the nanny. Realizing this, Edith, in order to avoid scandal, killed Josephine and committed suicide. Brenda and Lawrence are released. It also turns out that Aristide bequeathed his fortune to Sophia. She decides to marry Charles.

Personality[]

Sophia can be considered a positive version of her cruel sister Josephine. If Josephine is a monster in the body of a child who kills for petty reasons and stirs up family scandals simply out of boredom, then Sophia is much more kind-hearted. She is the only one of her family who does not have envy or recklessness. She is not a Drama Queen like her mother Magda. Her grandfather Aristide, being a rather insightful man, understood this and therefore bequeathed his property to her. The rest of the family were not very surprised by this and it is implied that they were even happy, since Sophia was loved by her family and was not spoiled.
