Hero Overview

I'm just a nice guy and people get the wrong idea sometimes.
~ Soren after betraying Rayla.
Soren: These are big doors, but we just have to push them open. We can do this!

Callum: It takes two giants to open these, there's no way we can--
Soren: Never give up! At times like this, the only strength that matters is the strength in your heart.

~ Soren telling Callum to not give up on pushing the gate to Umber Tor.

Soren is the tritagonist of the 2018 Netflix fantasy animated series The Dragon Prince.

Soren was the first child of Lord Viren, the High Mage of the kingdom of Katolis, and the elder brother of Claudia. Unlike his father and sister, Soren had no aptitude for sorcery and chose to become a member of the elite Crownguard tasked with protecting King Harrow.

Soren is voiced by Jesse Inocalla, who also voiced Marcos in the same series.

History[]

Background[]

During Soren's childhood, he became sick with an unknown illness that nearly killed him, but Viren saved his life using dark magic. His mother, disgusted by Viren's use of it, decided to leave him and gave the choice to her children as to whether they would go with her or stay with Viren. With Soren staying with his father, his sister Claudia did the same because she promised to protect him.

One day, one of Barius' cats Biscuits died, so Soren, Claudia, and possibly Barius, made a small ceremony for her. He would later find out that Claudia made her first dark magic spell by creating an illusion of Biscuits, which Soren disliked because he believed that Claudia couldn't get over the cat's death, but Claudia still liked it and told Soren that he didn't it because it was made of dark magic, and she tells him that dark magic could do anything.

Sometime later, Viren's mentor Kpp'Ar went missing, Claudia found out that he left a surprise for her and Soren in Kpp'Ar's puzzle house, so she tried to convince Soren to go, which he reluctantly accepted. While looking through the puzzle house, they found a stone giant, which led to them leaving the house and deciding that the place was too dangerous. The next day, Claudia remembered that the stone giant seemed sad, and while she tried to convince Soren to go back there, he refused because he believed the puzzle house was too dangerous for them, and told Claudia not to go there, although went there anyway.

Book 1: Moon[]

When Soren became the new head of the Crownguard, he made sure nothing happened to King Harrow. When the Moonshadow Elf assassins came, he did everything he could to protect King Harrow, but they were not enough when King Harrow was killed. Immediately afterward, his father, Lord Viren, sent him and his sister Claudia in search of Callum and Ezran.

Viren wanted him to kill Callum and Ezran when they were found, but he kept this from Claudia. She later used dark magic to activate a tracking spell that would lead them to the princes and the rest of team Zym.

Book 2: Sky[]

The tracking spell led Claudia in Soren to the Moon Nexus, where they came across Rayla, who was doing a second round of patrol. Claudia began playing a small flute that put Rayla to sleep. The siblings approached the Elven girl, and Claudia urged Soren to finish her off. However, Soren thought that slaughtering Rayla in her sleep wasn't noble or sporting for his taste. Claudia reluctantly started playing the flute only for Rayla to suddenly bounce up and push Soren away from her. The young elf revealed that she stayed awake by poking a moon rose thorn in her thumb. With that out of the way, Rayla and Soren engaged in a one-on-one battle with each other before Callum rushed in to stop them.

The siblings proceed to find a way to bring the princes back home, even with Soren claiming that the boys' father is still alive and wants them to come home. He also struggled to follow his dad's orders to take out the princes so Soren plans to make it look like an accident. His first attempt was to create a zipline for Zym and Ezran to ride down on. Soren sees a loose screw, and Rayla caught him in the act when she sees the zipline and makes him ride on it. His first attempt falls and Soren is forced to ride down on it and fix the screw loss.

Despite Claudia trying the tactic of using friendlier methods, Soren convinced her they had to take the two princes home by force. They pretend to join the team on their quest to end the war between human and magic kingdoms. However, Rayla, Ellis, and Ava create illusionary versions of Callum, Ezran, and Azymondias, only for Soren and Claudia to fail in their mission to capture the princes. Fortunately, Team Zym escapes on Phoe-Phoe and Corvus frees them from Claudia and Soren's grasp. The two then arrest Corvus, calling him a traitor.

The siblings and their captive make it to a town where it is being intimidated by Pyrrah, a young dragon. He decided to bring the young dragon down. After Soren provoked Pyrrah, she started firing at others. Soren set Corvus free so he could help innocent civilians. When Soren's plan backfired, Claudia brought Pyrrah down with Griffin's eye. Claudia and Soren see the Moonshadow elf, Rayla, there to defend the dragon as her responsibility to be the daughter of two Dragon guards. However, Soren mocks the girl for her unnecessary heroics. Fortunately, Callum uses dark magic by literally taking a page out of Claudia's spell book and freeing Pyrrah from her chains.

When Soren sees Rayla Trying to get the dragon to move, he holds her at sword point and starts mocking her for saving a dead dragon. However, Pyrrah awakens and seeks revenge on Soren for bringing her down. She throws him up against boulders, causing him to suffer from spinal damage, temporarily paralyzing him. After Ezran and Zym show up, Pyrrah presumably recognizes the infant Dragon as the Dragon Prince and she subsequently leads. Claudia started to cast a dark magic spell that would capture Ezran and Zym but Soren called to her for help. Forced to choose between following her father's orders to capture the egg or saving Soren, Claudia chooses the latter.

At the hospital, despite his paralysis, Soren takes comfort in this because it means he won't have to go after the princes like his father ordered him to. Later Claudia fully healed her brother from his paralysis. by sacrificing a baby deer, much to his horror. After leaving the hospital, Soren tells Claudia that they both failed their missions

Book 3: Sun[]

Later, he and Claudia were arrested for being involved in Viren's conspiracy, but they did not end up in a dungeon.

And then when Viren came to power, he decided to help Ezran escape because he didn’t want Ezran to be disappointed. And when Viren stole the Sunfire Elves with the horrible power with which he transformed his army into the Army of Darkness, Soren decided to leave because he knew Viren was about to change.

After leaving, he searched for Callum, Ezran, and Rayla to tell them the bad news that Viren was coming after Zym with his army. Then when the friends were deciding whether to fight or flee, Soren got to suggest to them that they would fight Viren, and so they did with the help of their friends. The battle was fierce, but they managed to defeat Viren and his Army of Darkness and save Zym.

Through the Moon[]

Soren would then go to a ceremony in the Moon Nexus, with Soren later sparring with Allen, only for Rayla to appear and knock out Allen and try to do the same to Soren to humiliate him, but she fails. Rayla would then talk to Soren about Viren, with him starting to question if he should be glad that he didn't kill his father, as Viren was an awful person and that he was still out there.

Soren would later become Corvus' mentor by training him to become a member of the Crownguard, after they ended their training, Corvus talked about how he used to live among trees before he met Amaya, and Corvus accepted becoming a new member of the Crownguard.

Book 4: Earth[]

A few months later and roughly two years after the battle of the Storm Spire, Soren goes to a council meeting where Ezran tells the council that Zubeia is coming to Katolis and would stall Callum alongside Corvus while the others are having a birthday party for him, but Callum fails to understand why they are not telling him something and started to believe Ezran was in danger and tried to talk to Ezran, but Corvus and Soren were able to convince him that it was something, so Callum told them to meet at his office. In there, Callum saw Ezran's room turn dark, causing Callum to fly to Ezran's room, only to find out they had a birthday party for him, with Soren missing the birthday song.

Soren would later appear in the ceremony made for Zubeia, with him entertaining her with jokes after Callum didn't appear since he overslept. Later, they would go to the valley where Ezran and Callum's parents were buried, and Ezran planned to show Zubeia a picture that would represent the peace between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms.

However, someone tore the face of Zubeia from the picture, causing Soren to angrily order the person to show himself, saying that they would get eaten by Zubeia for what they did. Because of how far he went, Ezran decided to calm him down, and would make a speech about the pain he felt and that people needed to keep the pain inside them so peace could happen.

They would see a message Ibis sent about how Aaravos had returned, so the Team went to the Storm Spire with Aaravos' mirror. They would then find Ibis' body, with them making a small ceremony and turning his body into birds.

They would then try to inspect Aaravos' mirror, with Aaravos possessing Callum. While possessing Callum, Aaravos would taunt the members of Team Zym, calling them pathetic children, with Soren he called him the failed whose father wished he had never been born.

Aaravos would then destroy his mirror, and Zubeia decided to go to Rex Igneous to find where Aaravos was imprisoned, so all the members of Team Zym, except Azymondias himself who Zubeia ordered to stay in the Storm Spire and went to the mountain where Rex was named Umber Tor.

They would find out that the only way to Rex was through a gate that was too small for Zubeia to fit in, so she wished them good luck and went back to the Storm Spire. While entering the mountain, they find out that there were Earthblood Elves named Drakeriders who hunted dragons for sport and would likely attack them.

During the time Soren and Rayla went to search for how to get to Rex Igneous, Soren attempted to talk to Rayla about her relationship with Callum but she refused to talk to him about it. They later found a Drakerider beating a dragon for fun, and while Rayla reluctantly left to make sure their cover wasn't blown, Soren went to save the dragon and defeated the Drakeriders, but he got captured by a group of Drakeriders and was sent to be eaten by the dragon he saved by throwing them in a pit.

However, Soren was able to become friends with the dragon and they were able to escape from the pit. While searching for where Rex Igneous was, he finds Claudia, they then have a fight, where Soren risks his life to save Claudia from a fall. However, Soren decided to hold Claudia with roots.

During this, Soren tried to convince her to stop trying to free Aaravos, but Claudia refused and told Soren that his dragon and elf friends were just manipulating him and that Aaravos was the only being who saw potential in humans. Soren would be held by roots that Terry used after he appeared and the latter freed Claudia.

After Soren saw his father again, Soren went to shock and started yelling "no" repeatedly, causing either Claudia or Viren to gag Soren with a small piece of cloth. That night, he was put in a cave close to a fireplace where Viren stayed with him while Terry and Claudia went to find objects to use for a magic spell. During this, Soren would start suffering from hallucinations of Viren, and when he started having trouble breathing, Viren calmed Soren down and tried to help him breathe.

Soren, however, refused his father's help and asked him why he didn't stay dead. When Viren tried to speak to Soren, he was interrupted by Aaravos' homunculus, with Claudia and Terry then appearing after this with the items they needed to use a magic spell, when Viren refused to do the spell, Soren was shocked, since he never saw his father hesitate in his life.

At Umber Tor, Claudia would put every member of Team Zym sleeping through a spell, but Soren was able to wake up Rayla, with her then waking up Rex Igneous by stabbing him in his left paw to stop Claudia from getting the map to Aaravos.

This would lead the rest of Team Zym to wake up, and they were able to escape from the cave since it started to collapse. They then hugged each other after Zubeia saved them from Rex Igneous. Later, Soren would go with Ezran, Zym, Zubeia, and Corvus to the Storm Spire to find the Siren Stone inside the Arcus Vault so they could meet Domina Profundis. There, he would challenge Corvus to see if he was faster walking down the stairs to the Arcus Vault than Pyrrah flying down to it.

In the end, Pyrrah won, but Corvus still told Soren that he never lost the workouts. While searching for the Siren Stone, Soren found an armor and decided to wear it. After finding the stone, Soren and Corvus would grab it and go to meet Domina Profundis with Ezran and Zym.

Book 5: Ocean[]

After arranging a meeting with the Dragon Queen of the ocean, Domina told them about the Archmage Akiyu, a Tidebound Elf who knew the location of Aaravos' prison.

Later, Soren would help in rescuing Callum and Rayla at the Bookery of Lux Aurea, with Amaya and Corvus staying behind so the group could escape from several corrupted banthers. While escaping from the Bookery, Zubeia was bitten by one of the banthers, which Soren would later notice was infecting her body, so he told her to rest, but she still decided to help the crew get to the tidepools where Akiyu lived and hid the infection from the rest of Team Zym.

In the tidepools, giant carrion gulls surround the group, but they are saved by a Tidebound elf who calls herself Tidebound Tina. They would then ask Tina if she knew Archmage Akiyu, with her affirming that and using a shell to make it look like she was talking with Akiyu through it, before telling them that Akiyu didn't want to meet with them. Team Zym, however, decided to go see Akiyu anyway, and due to not being able to convince them to turn back, "Tina" tricked the group (except Soren) into entering the mouth of a giant monster.

Soren tried to free them and asked Tina to help, but she refused and told them that the crew shouldn't have tried to find Aaravos. However, before the rest of Team Zym was digested, Azymondias electrocuted the stomach of the creature and forced it to throw them out. Callum then realized Tina was Archmage Akiyu, who told them that the reason she tried to have them killed was because she made a promise to a human mage called the Jailer that she would rather die than give anyone the information about Aaravos' prison.

Team Zym was able to convince her to reveal its location to them, however, by telling her that there were already people aware of the prison's location and were trying to free Aaravos, with Akiyu writing the location on a map and giving Callum an amulet that would help them breathe underwater, before demanding that they left her cave. The crew would then wait for Zubeia to appear so she could bring them to the location of Aaravos' prison at the Sea of the Castput, but due to her injuries, she was unable to leave the Storm Spire.

Noticing that Zubeia wouldn't show up, Rayla decided to go to the town of Scumport so they could get a ship, and while Ezran and Callum went to make a deal with the pirate lord Finnegrin so he could bring them to the Sea of the Castout, Rayla, and Soren would try to find someone else that could help them with little success. However, during this, they were able to find the former pirate Villads, who was an ally of Team Zym and was willing to get them to the Sea of the Castout.

When Ezran and Callum came back, the former told the group that Finnegrin had something that he shouldn't have, so the crew planned so they could get a box that was in Finnegrin's office. The plan was that Soren faked being a rich businessman to trick Finnegrin into following him to Callum and Villads, who would cause a distraction long enough for Rayla to steal the keys to Finnegrin's office and allow Ezran to get there and take the box before escaping.

It was successful, and at Villad's ship called the Ruthless, Ezran revealed that what was in the box were baby glow toads. This would lead to Finnegrin going after them, however, and while they made multiple attempts to escape from him and his ship, Finnegrin was able to capture the group. During their time captured, Soren was able to inspire Finnegrin's bodyguard Elmer by understanding the pain Elmer had been through because of Finnegrin due to knowing how it felt because of Soren's abuse by his father, and was to convince him to up to Finnegrin, leading to Finnegrin's demise and Team Zym and Finnegrin's crew being freed from his control.

Villads then brought Team Zym to the Sea of the Castout, and while Ezran, Callum, and Rayla went to get the pearl where Aaravos was imprisoned, Soren stayed in their boat and took care of the group's animals, after they got the pearl and defeated Claudia, Soren helped them get back to the boat.

Book 6: Stars[]

Personality[]

I know what this is like, I know how you feel. (Finnegrin)'s cruel. But you don't have to be.
~ Soren empathizing with Elmer and convinces him to stand up for himself.

Soren is a prideful individual, always liking compliments that people give him, he also can make dumb decisions due to his pride, as he attacked a dragon that was passing through a village because he thought he was going to attack it, which caused him to put the village on fire and presumably killing several people.

Soren wants to make his father proud of him no matter what, and when he hears that he wants the prince dead, he starts to ask himself if he is a bad person and is happy that he got heavily injured because he didn't want to hurt anyone else.

It's revealed that the reason why he bullied Callum was that he feels jealous of his relationship with his stepfather Harrow, due to him having a healthy and kind relationship unlike his abusive one with Viren, who manipulates and emotionally abuses him and treats his sister Claudia with more affection. In the two-year time skip, Soren is on better terms with Callum and while he calls him nicknames like "Step Mage," it's done out of teasing rather than out of malice

Soren would later rescue Ezran after he was imprisoned and helped in the battle against Viren's army, defecting from his side after understanding that he was on the wrong side. His sense of morals is shown to now matter a lot to him, as he refuses to allow his father to kill Ezran and "kills" Viren to save the latter (although it was later revealed that it was an illusion made by Claudia), which he immediately regretted it, but he understood that he needed to be stopped due just how awful he was.

Two years after the battle of the Storm Spire, Soren, while still dimwitted and arrogant, shows more morals than he did before. He refused to leave a dragon he didn't even know to be captured by a Drakerider, especially after Rayla told him to, and was more reasonable to Claudia and even risked his life when Claudia was about to fall off a cliff, despite the two being enemies at that moment. Soren also believes that Claudia can change and believes that she was just blinded by Viren like he was. During the Team's adventure, Soren has become considerably wiser, as he warms Callum the temptation of magic when he sees him obsessing over the same mirror Lord Viren once did. He also tried giving Rayla advice on her relationship with Callum, even telling her how Callum felt isolated during her absences. However, his advice is still misguided due to Rayla getting confused by his advice.

After he was captured by Claudia, Terry, and Viren, it's revealed that Soren "killing" Viren still haunts him, and suffers from self-hatred because of it, as he has a hallucination in his mind taunts him by questioning him why he did "kill" his father. When he sees Viren again and comes to accept that he is alive, he refuses his help in helping Soren breathe and asks him why he didn't stay dead.

Abilities[]

Unlike his father and sister, Soren doesn't use dark magic due to his negative feelings towards it.

  • Skilled Combatant: As the causing of the Crownguard, Soren is well versed in single combat and able to lead those under his command to battle. His skills are highly noticeable because of Soren's status as the youngest Crownguard in Katolis History. He went to great lengths to defend King Harrow and fight off the assassins as long as he could.
  • Skilled Swordsmanship: He is also one of the greatest swordsmen in the Dragon Prince universe. Soren was even appointed to teach Callum how to swordfight. However, he sometimes underestimates his opponents, as seen when he was fighting Rayla. Despite Soren claiming that knocking someone off the ground by swiping a sword underneath their feet, Rayla tried to use the move on him during their fight in Season because it worked for her when she incapacitated several guards in the second episode.
  • Strategist/Tactician: Despite being labeled a goof, Soren is talented on the battlefield and tactics. In Season 2, he knew to ask for a city's heavy, anti-siege weapon. However, Soren's plan to take down the dragon, Pyrrah, went wrong when he provoked her to attack, even though Pyrrah was merely flying over to intimate the townsfolk. In the events that followed, Soren and Claudia's attempts to fight Rayla and retrieve the dragon failed. Callum performed a dark magic spell to free Pyrrah from her chains and knocked Soren into a rock, causing him to suffer from paralysis until Claudia healed him. In Season 3, Soren devised a plan to smuggle Ezran and Bait out of Katolis. However, Ezran disagreed with the past of Soren's plan to put them in a burlap sack and instead suggested Soren smuggle them in a nearby hay cart instead.
  • Expert Equestrian: Soren owns a horse that he rides. In Book 4, Soren shows his horsemanship when he rides a dragon, Squeaky and they escape.

Trivia[]

  • Soren's paternal grandparents are deceased; Viren confirmed this upon briefly becoming king.
  • Viren notably is exasperated with Soren; with Aaravos claiming Viren wishes Soren wasn't born due to being a disappointment. But as of now, it is unknown if Viren thinks of Soren in that light. If what Aaravos said is true then that would make Viren and Soren's relationship much worse.
    • In season 5, it's revealed that deep down Viren does care for his son as he risks all his power to cure him from an incurable illness. And Aaravos confirms that he would not kill Soren or Claudia to make his resurrection permanent.
  • He maintains a stubble even after the time skip, a visual representation of his maturity from straight-up doofus to reliable knight.
  • Soren had spinal damage from being thrown into a rock by a dragon; rendering him paralyzed for life. Claudia used the life of a young deer to heal him.
