Sparda is the overarching protagonist of Netflix 2025 dark fantasy animated series Devil May Cry. He was the legendary dark knight who slain the beasts of Hell to protect mankind, as well as the father of both Dante and Vergil.

History

The Dark Knight

Two thousand years ago, when Earth and Makai were still joined, Sparda stood as the trusted knight and supreme commander of Mundus’s demonic legions. But in a moment that would reshape history, Sparda turned against his dark master. Choosing to defend humanity over conquest, he rose up against Mundus and the forces of the underworld.

Realizing that victory alone could not guarantee Earth’s everlasting safety, Sparda made the ultimate sacrifice. Channeling the power of his enchanted sword, along with his mystical amulet and blood, he forged a quantum barrier to sever the link between the human and demon realms.

With the worlds divided, Sparda chose to remain in the human world, fading from history and becoming a legend among mankind.

Later life and Dissapearance

In time, he met and fell in love with a human woman named Eva. Together, they would bring two sons into the world—Dante and Vergil, born of both demon and human blood.

But fate had other plans, and Sparda would vanish before ever meeting the sons destined to carry on his legacy.
