~ Spencer Introducing himself |
Spencer is a recurring character in Thomas and Friends, the main antagonist of Hero of the Rails, and a minor anti-hero in The Great Race.
He is a big silver streamlined LNER A4 steam engine who belongs to the Duke and Duchess of Boxford. He is also Gordon's arch-rival.
In the UK dub, he is voiced by Matt Wilkinson, and in the US dub, he is voiced by Glenn Wrage.
Personality[]
Spencer is very arrogant, snooty, selfish, vain, egotistical, narcissistic, bossy and pompous and considers himself to be above doing menial duties such as shunting. He is very proud of his speed. Although the engines on Sodor were impressed by him when he first arrived on Sodor, due to the fact that he would later belittle them, the engines grew to hate him, especially Thomas and Gordon.
Most of Spencer's traits were recycled from other big engines, who share his the same personalities as him.
- Spencer takes on most of James' negative traits such as his vanity and narcissism. Interestingly, both James and Spencer are both cared about their paintworks and hates being dirty and pulling goods train.
- Spencer also acts more like Gordon by acting egotistical, pompous and arrogant who thinks he's strongest and best and also hates being dirty and pulls goods train.
Gordon and Spencer strongly dislike each other. This is mainly because of his pompous behaviour, which exceeds even that of Gordon's—whereas Gordon does not let his ego completely consume him, Spencer does. His arrogance has also shown that he is not willing to take advice from other engines, which only results in him needing help from those he shrugs off.
Biography[]
He is a handsome, shiny, silver tender engine who is privately owned by the Duke and Duchess of Boxford, in Thomas And Friends. One reason he is famous is because he is based off of the famous British Railway's Class LNER A4 4-6-2 locomotive, for example, the Mallard! Like his cousin Gordon, he is grand, pompous, arrogant, and only cares for himself. He even thinks he is too important to pull freight cars, and usually shows disrespect towards Thomas and the other engines, which can be seen in the movie Hero of the Rails, whereas his villainous side is more developed, and when he sees Hiro, he tries all he can to have him scrapped, but his vain and selfish ways give him bad karma when he falls into a marshland while chasing Thomas trying to stop him from telling Sir Topham Hatt about Hiro. After Hiro and Thomas rescue him, Spencer apologises to them, and they all build the summer house together. Since after that, Spencer is more shown to be less of a villain, he is a former villain, though still narcissistic, arrogant and pompous, but seems to have gotten on well with the Sodor engines from time to time, to the delight of Thomas fans.
Trivia[]
His name is possibly a reference to Bert Spencer who was the right hand man of the A4 designer Sir Nigel Gresley.
