“ | Who am I? Are you sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody said it was a happy little tale... if somebody told you I was just your average ordinary guy, not a care in the world... somebody lied. But let me assure you, this like any story worth telling, is all about a girl. That girl. The girl next door. Mary Jane Watson. The woman I've loved since before I even liked girls. I'd like to tell you that's me next to her. Aw, heck, I'd even take him. | „ |
~ Peter Parker at the beginning of the first movie; The first words in the entire trilogy. |
“ | Whatever comes our way...whatever battle is raging inside us, we always have a choice. My friend Harry taught me that. He chose to be the best of himself. It’s the choices that make us what we are...and we can always choose to do what's right. | „ |
~ Peter Parker at the end of the third movie; The last words in the entire trilogy. |
“ | The night Ben died, I hunted down the man who I thought did it. I wanted him dead. I got what I wanted. It didn't make it better. Took me a long time to... learn to get through that darkness. | „ |
~ Peter Parker to his alternate self |
Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, is the titular main protagonist of Sam Raimi's superhero film trilogy of the same name and the tritagonist of the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
He is a high school student who was bitten by a genetically altered "super" spider while on a school field trip. Endowed with the proportionate powers and abilities of a spider and following his uncle's tragic death, he intended to use his abilities for good; thus becoming the crime-fighting superhero to the public, Spider-Man.
He is portrayed by Tobey Maguire, who also played David in Pleasantville, Sam Cahill in Brothers, Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, and also voiced Lou in Cats & Dogs, Tim Templeton in Boss Baby. In the Japanese dub of the movies, he was voiced by Manabu Ino.
Personality[]
“ | No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try. The ones I love will always be the ones who pay. | „ |
~ Peter Parker. |
Peter Parker, as Spider-Man, is shown to be a brave and righteous hero with an indomitable sense of justice and responsibility. Since the death of his wise and beloved Uncle Ben, Peter's vow of responsibility had led him to a path of heroism and humanitarianism. To those in the authorities, Spider-Man was shown to be an outlaw and vigilante, someone just as dangerous as those he brought in. This was because the authorities mistrust Spider-Man at first, due to his vigilantism, but he continued to fight crime in New York City.
Over the years, Spider-Man gradually became respected by the authorities, those are the NYPD and NYFD, as well as the citizens of New York City, despite J. Jonah Jameson considering him as a masked menace in the Daily Bugle newspaper. Spider-Man is individualistic as he works by himself, this was caused when he was a social outcast in his youth. This gradually lessened when he became best friends with Harry Osborn and then the boyfriend of Mary Jane.
Peter was originally shy and awkward towards his lifelong crush Mary Jane Watson, as he had a hard time talking to her and making conversations with her. Since he didn't want her to get hurt by his enemies, he wanted to be friends with her, but after Mary Jane discovers his superhero identity, she decides to be with him no matter what risks can be caused.
When the Venom Symbiote bonded with him, it unleashed his dark and vengeful side when he fought Sandman in the subway in a relentless way. The suit possessed him which made him beat up Harry at his pent home after he blackmailed Mary Jane to "break up" with him and taunted him about how his dad saw him as a failure, including throwing a pumpkin bomb at him, disfiguring the right side of Harry's face. Under the influence of the symbiote, he temporarily became arrogant and aggressive when he revealed Eddie Brock's fake photos to the Daily Bugle, getting him fired and unintentionally striking Mary Jane at the Jazz Club. He realized that the symbiote was controlling him, making his friends suffer the same way it did for Peter. He did the right thing by rejecting and getting rid of the symbiote in a church, returning to his true personality.
After defeating Venom and Sandman along with the death of his best friend Harry Osborn, Peter realizes that whatever battle-raging inside himself and everyone he loves, he and his loved ones always had a choice. This was when Harry taught him and he will always choose to do what was right. Peter has a caring side when near the end of Spider-Man 3, he eventually decides that it was time to mend his relationship with Mary Jane, which she returned as the two rekindled their romance and were back as a couple.
In Spider-Man No Way Home, Peter returns years later through a spell, teleporting him to an alternate universe, he had become the most experienced out of all his counterparts due to all the years he spent as being Spider-Man. Parker had fought the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the New Goblin, and Venom during those years, with each enemy testing his morals. Due to this, he is also the most mature of the three Spider-Men. Slightly more quiet and reserved but still nonetheless willing to joke and be lighthearted. He also still possesses a strong sense of responsibility, as shown by how he still held guilt over indirectly causing his uncle's death. As a result of the events he has faced in his life, Parker developed a strict sense of justice and a code against killing people, including his villains, as he stopped his counterpart from killing Norman Osborn out of revenge for him killing one of his loved ones as Green Goblin because he knew deep down, there was still goodness within Osborn as well as having the guilt of Harry's death still on him as he reveals with his conversation with Ned. The empathy he shows to his enemies is even sometimes reciprocated as is the case with Otto Octavius, with whom he is on very good terms, as Octavius even helps the Spider-Men during their battle against the other villains.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Peter didn't appear, he made a cameo appearance through a Archive Footage, displaying the death of Ben Parker and how his death is a Canon Event.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Spider Physiology: Due to being bitten by a genetically altered super spider, Peter Parker had now gained the proportionate powers of a spider. He has increased strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes, healing, and highly acute senses. He has a "spider-sense" that alerts him to danger, produces organic webbing from his wrists, and scales on walls. His powers include:
- Superhuman Strength: Spider-Man possesses superhuman strength enabling him to lift approximately Hundreds of tons or more when extreme distress. Spider-Man's physical strength is sufficient to lift and throw objects as heavy as most standard automobiles with ease. He must also pull his punches and kicks unless fighting someone of similar or greater physical durability. Otherwise, his blows would prove fatal to a normal human being. Spider-Man's physical strength also extends into his legs, enabling him to be able to jump to a height of several stories in a single bound. Spider-Man has shown impressive feats of strength. Such as when he was able to hold a cable car full of children with one arm and show no sign of stress. He was also able to send Flash Thompson flying many meters with a single punch. Also, Spidey was able to support the warehouse where Doctor Octopus was holding his secret experiment. Also, Spider-Man has managed to overpower multiple men with ease. And his strength temporarily increased when he was connected to the Venom Symbiote. He even prevent his MCU counterpart from killing Green Goblin by grabbing hold of the latter's glider, after his MCU counterpart bested Goblin in his final battle with him.
- Superhuman Speed: Spider-Man can run and move at speeds that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. Spider-Man moves faster than the eye can see. As shown during his fights with Green Goblin as well as him quickly stopping MCU Peter from killing the latter even though he was far away from the site of their final battle.
- Superhuman Stamina: Spider-Man's advanced musculature produces fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity than any ordinary human. This allows him to exert himself physically for much longer periods before fatigue begins to impair him. At his peak, Spider-Man can physically exert himself for several hours before the build-up of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to impair him.
- Superhuman Durability: Spider-Man's body is physically tougher and more resistant to some types of injury than the body of any normal human. His body is more resistant to impact forces than anything else. He can withstand great impacts, such as falling from a height of several stories or being struck by an incredibly strong opponent, that would severely injure or kill a normal human with little to no discomfort.
- Superhuman Agility: Spider-Man's equilibrium, dexterity, and flexibility are all enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. Spider-Man is extraordinarily limber and his tendons and connective tissues are twice as elastic as the average human being's, despite their enhanced strength. He has the combined agility and acrobatic prowess of the most accomplished circus aerialists and acrobats. He can also perform any complicated sequence of gymnastic stunts such as flips, rolls, and springs. He can easily match or top any Olympic record in gymnastics apparatus such as flying rings, climbing ropes, horizontal bars, and trampolines.
- Superhuman Equilibrium: Spider-Man possesses the ability to achieve a state of perfect equilibrium in any position imaginable. He seems able to adjust his position by instinct, which enables him to balance himself on virtually any object, no matter how small or narrow.
- Superhuman Endurance: Spider-Man's endurance is far beyond that of any normal human being, his pain tolerance, tenacity, vitality, and willpower is surpassed that of any normal human being.
- Superhuman Flexibility: Spider-Man is more flexible than normal humans, He can bend his body in ways that normal humans would need to train for years to do so.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Spider-Man's reflexes are greater than normal humans; for example, he can dodge or counter any attack, including gunfire, even at point-blank range. Spider-Man's Spider-Sense also greatly further amplifies his superhuman reflexes because he can preempt danger before it happens.
- Superhuman Senses: Spider-Man's senses are far more greatly developed than normal humans, he no longer needs his glasses after the spider's bite. He can sense, hear and see beings and objects near to and distant from him much like any spider would.
- Spider-Sense: Spider-Man possesses precognitive danger senses, as he can quickly dodge any form of attacks after sensing them; it warns him of any form of danger to oneself and others by the manifestation of a tingling sensation in the base of his skull, and links with his superhuman kinesthetics, enabling him to evade most injuries unless he cognitively overrides his automatic reflexes. The precise nature of this sense is unknown. It appears to be a simultaneous clairvoyant response of phenomena (from falling safes to speeding bullets to thrown punches) which has given several hundredths of a second warning, which is sufficient time for his reflexes to allow him to avoid injury. The sense can also create a general response on the order of several hours: he can discern the nature of the threat by the sensation and the severity of the danger by the strength of his response to it. Spider-Man's spider-sense is directional and can guide him to or away from hidden or disguised weapons and enemies. Sudden and extreme threats can cause his spider-sense to react with painful intensity. The spider-sense also gives him psychological awareness of his surroundings, any form of sneak and surprise attack is useless against him, Spider-Man can also sense and dodge attacks directed randomly or by a computer. Using his spider-sense to time his enhanced reflexes, Spider-Man can casually dodge attacks up to and including automatic weapons fire, even at point-blank. His spider sense is sufficiently well-linked to his reflexes to the point that a threat can trigger them even when Spider-Man is asleep or stunned. His spider-sense has helped him preserve his secret identity since it alerts him to observers or cameras when changing into or out of his costume. The spider-sense does not react to those who Peter does not consider to be a threat, such as Aunt May. Spider-Man can choose to ignore his spider-sense through intense concentration, though it gets difficult as more threatening the danger is, and it can lose some effectiveness if he is exhausted or distracted. Spider-Man's fighting style incorporates the advantage that his "spider-sense" provides him. His body begins to produce more adrenaline after the sense is triggered, an extension of the "fight or flight syndrome". Spider-Man's spider-sense can also be used to psychologically see his surrounding environment, even when blinded or in extremely dark conditions, allowing him to navigate without worry or fear. Even under normal conditions, his spider sense also helps him navigate darkened rooms, instinctively avoiding obstacles or hazards, or potentially noisy unstable floorboards, walls, or ceilings that may betray his presence. With his spider-sense, Spider-Man can ascertain non-threatening information, such as detecting the concealed presence of loved ones.
- Night Vision: Due to his superhumans, he can see clearly in any form of darkness.
- Accelerated Perception: Spider-Man can also sense, hear and see beings and things so fast and process information, and persevere and think much faster than normal humans. Spider-Man can sense, see and hear being and things so fast that they appear in slow motion.
- Adhesive-Sticking/Wall Crawling: Spider-Man can mentally control the flux of inter-atomic attractive forces on surfaces he touches, allowing him to stick to any surface, no matter how rough or slippery. He has conscious control over this ability, and it is simple and instinctive for him to use. This ability is so far limited to Spider-Man's body (especially concentrated in his hands and feet) and other objects, with an upper limit of several tons per finger. The full nature of this ability has yet to be established but it seems that he is capable of using this combined with his strength to uproot objects from their place without having to fully use his hands.
- Biological/Organic Webbing Generation: In the Sam Raimi Trilogy, Spider-Man was also gifted with the ability to organically produce his silk webbing from glands within his forearms, depending on his body's health and nutrition. These organic webs have many of the same properties as his comic book counterpart's artificial webbing, though they require a week to decay rather than decomposing in two hours, Thanks to their similar properties, it appears Spider-Man can utilize his organic webbing in any way he could with his artificial webbing. The silk is released through a spinneret near each wrist containing a central web spigot orifice used for web-slinging and draglines, supplemented by several radial minor spigots for other types of webs connected to specialized glands, Spider-Man can release long, thin strands of organic webbing in the form of web lines and drag lines released from a pair of ampullated glands located in each forearm and released through a major web spigot in each wrist. By firing a thin strand of webbing at a nearby object, usually a tall building or object, then swinging with a said strand of webbing, Spider-Man can blend captured criminals (even those with superhuman strength) to be picked up by police officers, as well as covering a small area with an extremely sticky blob, trapping or ensnaring escaping criminals or vehicles. He can cast extremely large webs across two certain points as sticky nets to ensnare escaping criminals. Spider-Man can travel vast distances quickly. When Spider-Man swings across a city on his web lines, his spider-sense guides his aim, allowing him to travel at high speeds at hundreds of feet above street level with minimal concentration, confident his web lines will find secure anchor points. A pair of flabelliform glands located within his forearms release a variety of elastic, sticky ensnarement and are released through minor web spigots in each wrist, firing a thicker "rope" of webbing, Spider-Man can cover an opponent's eyes, blindfolding them, or smother a handgun or a small bomb. He can also shape his webbing into various shapes and structures, such as parachutes, statues or dummies, baseball bats, full-size operational gliders, gloves, nets, air-proof domes, bandages, slings, bulletproof shields, plugs, patches, and even hammocks. The process is effortless for him, as he states it's like breathing.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Spider-Man rapidly regenerates from physical injuries faster, more extensively, and efficiently than that of any normal human being is capable of and he is also able to rapidly recover from injuries that would normally kill normal humans. Miner and moderate injuries rapidly heal in a matter of minutes and serious and severe injuries in a matter of hours, after getting his powers, he soon discovered that he no longer needed his glasses, and his vision was more acute without them, His eyesight was superhuman, he rapidly healed the stab would by Harry to the abdomen with only a little blood to come out without scarring. All the cuts he received from his battles healed in a matter of hours. Thanks to his regenerative power he is more resistant to the effects of alcohol and drugs and retains his athletic physique with minimal exercise. It is unknown if the power slows down the aging process.
Abilities[]
- Genius-Level Intellect: Peter Parker is very smart as he is an expert in all kinds of science. Peter goes from a science whiz in high school to a laboratory assistant of Dr. Connors and a brilliant Columbia University physics student who is at the top of his class as he becomes secure with his dual roles.
- Science Major: His knowledge of science has impressed the likes of Norman Osborn, Otto Octavius, and Doctor Connors. Considered a genius by Harry and Gwen, he has shown himself to be knowledgeable in mechanics, quantum mechanics, photonics, nuclear fusion, acoustics, and nanotechnology.
- Photographic Memory: Thanks to his high intellect, Peter can remember anything he studies or memorize anything by looking in a book, taking a glance at a chalkboard, or hearing what people say to him. He was able to remember the formula that helped to cure the Green Goblin of his powers, as he had "studied it for a long time."
- Skilled Photographer: Peter is a very skilled photographer. He use this skills in his part time job in Daily Bugle to take photos of himself.
- Master Acrobat: Thanks to his superhuman agility, reflexes, and strength, Peter is a very skilled acrobat and gymnast. He is skilled in all kinds of acrobatics and gymnastics as he uses these to dodge gunfire.
- Expert Combatant: Peter became a highly skilled fighter during his vigilantism career, His fighting style resembles a combination of several fighting styles such as boxing, wing chun, karate, taekwondo, capoeira, judo, krav maga, muay thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and professional wrestling. he has a proclivity for incorporating his elevated physical strength, outstanding agility, athleticism, and webs into his unique combat, all added by his early awareness of danger. Peter has defeated criminals, Flash Thompson, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom, In battle, Peter tends to punch opponents, as seen with Flash, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman.
- Expert Marksman: Peter is also highly accurate when he projects his webbing. He usually shoots to blind, silence, and restrain opponents in battle or stealth.
Weaknesses[]
- Spider-Sense Disruption: Spider-Man's spider-sense can lose its effect when he is close to the Venom Symbiote, due to him being a host to the Venom Symbiote. The symbiotic life form can block his spider-sense which enables Venom to tackle Spider-Man without warning him, making Venom a deadly foe.
- Emotional State: If Spider-Man becomes emotionally stressed; he will temporarily lose his superpowers, which reverts him to his normal state; which is before Spider-Man is bitten by a genetically modified super spider.
- Ethyl Chloride: Perhaps as a side of Spider-Man gaining his powers, he is susceptible to the pesticide ethyl chloride.
- Bad Luck: Not exactly a typical weakness, but Peter Parker's life is a very complicated one. His superhero duties make it hard for him when he tries to get to his college classes, work, and even Mary Jane's play on time. Sometimes he can be late for his work at the Daily Bugle, college classes, dates, and going to see Mary Jane's acting plays, due to his crime-fighting activities. This has put strains on his relationships with his loved ones and he struggles to maintain his relationships with his Aunt May, Harry Osborn, and Mary Jane Watson.
Reception[]
Throughout Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, the character and Tobey Maguire's performance received widespread critical acclaim from both fans and critics, praising his character development and the focus on balancing his double life as a superhero and civilian. Maguire received numerous awards and nominations for his role, with the Saturn Award for Best Actor and the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss (Kirsten Dunst, upside-down kiss). Many critics and audiences alike claim him to be the greatest and most faithful live-action version of the original comic book character. Tobey's successors in the role, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland even praised Maguire's performance.

Trivia[]
- In Peter David's novels, there are a few differences from the movie:
- The beginning of the novelization of Spider-Man has Spider-Man visiting a cemetery to try and stop a bunch of raving teenagers, though they get away.
- There is an extra chapter of him moving in with Aunt May and Uncle Ben while being told that his parents dies in a plane crash. When Peter is told of how his parents died from Uncle Ben, Peter theorizes Red Skull killed his parents.
- When Peter defeats Flash Thompson in school Flash is left bleeding heavily from his face.
- Instead of taking a leap of faith and shooting his web at a construction bar, he shoots first and then swings on his web while trying not to give out a "Tarzan yell".
- Unlike his comic book version, he did mention that he loved Mary Jane since childhood in the first movie, while in the comic book, he didn't love her until after Gwen's death, which made him realize that he does love her. So he didn't go on a TV show other than wresting to win the money to impress Mary Jane with a car in the first movie while in the comic book, he was on a TV show after wresting with the guy. He only fought 5 villains in Spider-Man Trilogy while in the comic book, he fought various villains. He didn't realize that Flint was responsible for his uncle's death in the third movie, while in the comic book, it was just a thief from the TV show backstage.
- Also, in the original comics, Spider-Man used mechanical web shooters with artificial webbing he designed himself, unlike the Raimi Series Spider-Man who could shoot webbing. This change was due to Sam Raimi's decision of making it more realistic since a high schooler could not have created something government scientists could not (considering that in comics, Peter Parker is quite genius).
- His middle name is never revealed to be "Benjamin" like in the comics.
- It was revealed that Tobey was gonna come back as Spider-Man again if Spider-Man 4 wasn't canceled in 2010, but it didn't work out with Sam Raimi.
- Spider-Man 2 filmed the Train scene in Chicago to incorporate it in New York because of the Directors' decision.
- Many of Tobey's quotes in the trilogy were made into memes. Most notably, "Look at little Goblin Junior. Gonna Cry?" and "I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye".
- The studio had expressed interest in actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Furlong, Jude Law, Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Klein, Wes Bentley, and Heath Ledger for Spider-Man. Furlong had been considered by James Cameron for the role in 1996, while Sam Raimi joked about Prinze that "[he] won't even be allowed to buy a ticket to see this film." Also, actors Scott Speedman, Jay Rodan, and James Franco were involved in screen tests for the lead role with Franco later being cast as Harry Osborn.
- Ironically, Tobey Maguire said he had never read a Spider-Man comic book but took the role because he liked the script.
- One of the chief difficulties that Tobey Maguire experienced in the now-famous upside-down kissing scene was that his sinuses kept filling up with water as it was performed in driving rain.
- By signing on for two sequels, Tobey Maguire secured himself a paycheck of $26 million.
- To acquire his bumped-up physique, Tobey Maguire went through a strict five-month regimen of exercise, weight training, and martial arts six times a week, as well as eating a high-protein meal four to six times a day.
- When Sam Raimi first offered to cast Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, the studio was initially very reluctant. That was until they saw Maguire's test and they saw that the actor had bulked up for the role.
- Spider-Man's webbing in the film is made out of foam materials and a fishing line.
- It was also enhanced with CGI.
- Tobey Maguire had to have his Spider-Man outfit slightly remodeled as the original design had not made any allowances for when the actor needed a bathroom break. A vent was added to enable him to perform without having to take the entire costume off.
- During the fight between the Green Goblin and Spider-Man near the end, Willem Dafoe accidentally clipped Tobey Maguire on the chin with one blow.
- When used in the trailer, the shot of Peter doing a long backflip onto a car hood was digitally altered to put him in his Spider-Man outfit instead of his wrestling outfit.
- When two studio executives were shown shots of the computer-generated Spider-Man, they believed it was Tobey Maguire performing the stunts.
- Both Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe incorporated a Yoga technique called Ashtanga into their training regimens for this film. "Ashtanga" translates into English as "eight-legged," like a spider.
- Zach Hudson, the stunt double for Tobey Maguire, fractured his leg after a stunt went wrong and he slammed into a brick wall.
- Tobey Maguire was approached for the film largely as a result of his performance in The Cider House Rules (1999). Sam Raimi felt that Maguire's performance in the film embodied much of the character and personality traits he was looking for in Peter/Spider-Man.
- Josh Hartnett turned down the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Frankie Muniz and Topher Grace were considered for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Grace would later play Venom in the third film. Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he later appeared with Tobey Maguire in The Great Gatsby (2013).
- Wes Bentley was considered for the role of Peter/Spider-Man and was widely viewed as the choice of most fans for the part.
- Before Tobey Maguire was cast, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elijah Wood, Edward Furlong, Jude Law, Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Klein, Wes Bentley, and the late Heath Ledger were considered for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
- One of the scenes that Tobey Maguire performed for his screen test was the final one in which Peter Parker rejects Mary Jane.
- The train fight between Doc Ock and Spider-Man was the idea of director Sam Raimi and the first major sequence to be filmed.
- Tobey Maguire's participation was in doubt at one point because he was suffering severe back pains. Jake Gyllenhaal, was lined up to play Spider-Man and had already begun preparation, but Maguire decided to take part after all. However, according to the DVD commentary, the "My back!" joke after Peter falls from the roof was purely coincidental, as it was written into the script before Maguire's problem arose. Gyllenhaal would go on to play Spider-Man's enemy Mysterio fifteen years later in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
- Funnily enough, the "My back!" joke returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
- When Peter dumps his Spider-Man suit in a garbage can, it's an exacting homage to a panel from "Spider-Man No More", Issue #50 from The Amazing Spider-Man. As in the film, the outfit is found and brought to J. Jonah Jameson, then reclaimed by Spider-Man who leaves a note like the one in the movie.
- Peter rents above a TV repair shop. He doesn't live with Harry anymore since Norman's death, and Harry moved back into his father's townhouse. Harry's obsession with Spider-Man was too much for Peter to bear. This is the reason why he gets annoyed with Harry at his birthday party.
- There are several visual references to the first film in the sequel:
- Peter runs into a burning building to save a child.
- Peter runs across a rooftop before trying (and failing) to shoot his web.
- Peter putting out the trash in Aunt May's backyard and speaking to Mary Jane.
- Spider-Man lying incapacitated on the sofa of his enemy.
- POV of Peter Parker looking through his glasses and seeing a blurred image.
- Peter while being possessed by the Venom symbiote has spawned several internet memes, many people calling him "Emo Peter" or "Bully Maguire".
