~ Peter to Hope. |
Peter Benjamin Parker, also known as Spider-Man is a character in the 2021 Disney+ animated series, What If...?, appearing as the main protagonist of the fifth episode What If... Zombies!? He is a different version of Spider-Man who survived the quantum virus outbreak that occurred in 2018, caused by Hank Pym bringing his infected wife from the quantum realm. He later joined the surviving heroes to form the Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group, and tried to find a cure to end the virus.
Peter is voiced by Hudson Thames.
Biography[]
Background[]
The history of this version of Peter Parker is similar to his Earth-199999 counterpart, being born in the 2000s to Richard and Mary Parker and later being raised by his uncle Ben and aunt May with his Uncle dying somewhere during his childhood. He would later be bitten by a spider that gave him superhuman abilities, and decided to use his gifts to protect New York under the alter-ego "Spider-Man". Before 2018, Peter was mentored by Tony Stark, whom offered him a membership in the Avengers. Parker would turn it down, however, deciding to remain in New York City since he had the title of "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man". While attending high school, Parker was a member of an A/V club that watched horror movies, which came in handy when the zombie apocalypse started.
What If...?[]
In 2018, Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne succeeded in bringing Janet van Dyne back from the Quantum Realm, but discovered that she was infected with the quantum virus. Janet went on to infect Hank, and the two caused an outbreak across the world, which resulted in the Avengers failing to prevent its spread in San Francisco. Aunt May would become infected as well, but it is unknown if Peter was forced to neutralize her or simply evaded his aunt when she turned. Following the start of the outbreak, Peter would meet with Happy Hogan, Winter Soldier, Okoye, Sharon Carter, and Kurt Goreshter, and they formed a survivor group and tried to find a cure. Additionally, Spider-Man started to create survival videos on how to survive the apocalypse.
During this time, Spider-Man encountered the Wasp and helped her rescue Bruce Banner, who had returned to Earth, from the zombified Iron Man. Taking Banner to the base above the city, Peter explained the situation to Bruce before showing him his survival video, but they were interrupted by Okoye. She explained to the group that she received a message that gave off a location to a possible camp, which Carter was able to identify as Camp Lehigh. Seeing an opportunity to find more survivors, the group decided to leave the base and travel to the camp. Traveling to the Grand Central Terminal, Parker managed to get the trains moving before being attacked by a zombie horde, but is saved by the Cloak of Levitation.
Peter would be informed that Happy was turned as Wasp was infected by Carter, and Hope was inspired by Parker's words to sacrifice herself to have the group reach Camp Lehigh. At the camp, Parker and the group encountered Vision, who revealed that he was using the mind stone to find a cure, and was successful in curing Scott Lang. However, the group also learned that Vision was bringing survivors the camp to feed Scarlet Witch, who had become infected herself. Spider-Man and the team were forced to battle an infected Maximoff, but was able to escape via a Quadjet with Black Panther (who was being fed to Scarlet Witch) and Ant-Man. The following morning, Peter spoke with T'Challa on their losses, but remained determined in finding a cure to save the rest of humanity. Unbeknownst to them, Thanos had arrived in Wakanda to find the remaining Infinity Stones, but was infected in the process of his journey. It is unknown if the group were killed by Thanos, or were killed when Infinity Ultron killed the zombies that Strange Supreme brought during their battle.
