Hamato Splinter is the overarching protagonist of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series by Mirage Comics. He is the adoptive father of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. Originally the adoptive rat of Hamato Yoshi, he had to wander in the sewer after the his owner was murdered by the Shredder, before finding the Turtles and adopting them.
Biography[]
In Japan 1964, the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi would often watch his owner practicing ninjitsu and mimic him. Yoshi was a member of the Foot Clan, and was in love with Tang Shen, who also loved him back. However, Yoshi's comrade Oroku Nagi was jealous of Yoshi and thus demanded Tang Shen to love him instead. When Tang Shen refused, Nagi beated her, until Yoshi returned and killed him to protect her. The pair then moved to New York.
Unfortunately, Nagi's younger brother, Saki, wished to avenge him. Training over the years and climbing through the ranks of the Foot, he eventually became its New York branch's leader, earning the moniker of "the Shredder". Saki then followed Yoshi and Tang Shen, before slaying them both. Meanwhile, the rat escaped, found and adopted the Turtles, and the five were mutated into anthropomorphic forms by the Utroms' mutagen, with their first word being "Splinter", as such named the rat. Splinter then named them with those in an old renaissance art book that he found in a storm drain: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, and trained them martial arts that he learned from his late master, so they will grow up into assassins to avenge him.
Years later, the Turtles finally have a fight with the Shredder and successfully kill him, avenging Yoshi at last. Despite the Shredder's death, Splinter still aids the Turtles in fighting many other evil forces. They also befriend April O'Neil and Casey Jones and find out the true nature of their mutation from the Utroms.
Trivia[]
- Unlike many of his subsequent incarnations, this Splinter doesn't directly assists the turtles against the Shredder, something which attributed to the latter being originally a one-shot villain rather than more tenacious main antagonist.
