Sheriff SpongeBuck SquarePants is the main protagonist of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode, "Pest of the West".
He was SpongeBob's ancestor from the Wild West Period, and he was an old Western hero who came to the town of Dead Eye Gulch. While initially heading to the Krusty Kantina to apply for a job as a fry cook, he wound up being appointed as the town sheriff. Afterwards, he would go on to rescue the town from the clutches of its evil ruler, Dead Eye Plankton. Sometime after Dead Eye Plankton's defeat, SpongeBuck would turn Dead Eye Gulch into Bikini Bottom, effectively becoming the father of Bikini Bottom. However, he is deceased by the time the TV series begins.
Just like his descendant, he was voiced by Tom Kenny, who also voiced some of the Incidentals and Gary from the same franchise, Heffer Wolfe and Buddy Gecko from Rocko's Modern Life, Eduardo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Rabbit, The Mayor, and the narrator from The Powerpuff Girls franchise, Dog from CatDog, Ice King from Adventure Time, Carl Chryniszzswics in Johnny Bravo, the title character from Spyro the Dragon, and Talking Hank in Talking Tom & Friends.
Biography[]
SpongeBuck SquarePants first arrived in the dusty frontier town of Dead Eye Gulch—formerly the peaceful Bikini Gulch—at a time when the settlement had fallen under the control of Dead Eye Plankton. Seeking nothing more than honest work as a fry cook, SpongeBuck stepped into the town’s combined saloon and theater, the Krusty Kantina, unaware that his visit would soon take an unexpected turn.
Recognizing SpongeBuck's gullible spirit (and lacking better options), Pappy Krabs promptly appointed him Sheriff of the troubled town. However, SpongeBuck had only wanted to become a fry cook. As a bonus, SpongeBuck's courage was tested almost immediately when Dead Eye Plankton arrived to challenge the new sheriff to a high noon showdown.
The encounter didn't begin well. SpongeBuck was swiftly sent tumbling into the desert, where, amid delirious conversations with longhorn skulls, he encountered the good-natured but not especially sharp Pecos Patrick. As a thanks for helping him gain the confidence needed to fight Dead Eye, SpongeBuck affectionately nicknamed him "Idiot Friend", and in return, Pecos Patrick offered simple but strangely effective advice: the key to defeating Dead Eye might be nothing more complicated than giving him a good smack. The duo made an unconventional return to town—launched high into the air by an enormous cactus—and landed directly back in Dead Eye Gulch. There, SpongeBuck finally confronted Dead Eye in a parody of a classic Western-style standoff. Yet the showdown ended in seconds when SpongeBuck simply stepped on the villain, employing a tactic so obvious that both he himself and the townspeople had never even considered it.
With Dead Eye defeated, Pappy Krabs immediately found a new business opportunity in letting townsfolk take turns stomping on the outlaw. Polene Puff eagerly volunteered first. The people of Bikini Gulch erupted in celebration, giving three triumphant "yee-haws" for their hero and commissioning a golden statue in SpongeBuck's honor. Although Hopalong Squidward insisted that a more muscular interpretation would have been superior, the statue stood proudly as a tribute to the sheriff who saved the town.
In the present, SpongeBob listens in admiration to the story of his ancestor but wonders what became of the impressive monument. He soon discovers it buried beneath a thick coating of jellyfish poop. With a mixture of determination and mild disgust, SpongeBob cleans the statue—using himself as the sponge—to Sandy's confusion. When the gleaming golden figure of SpongeBuck reappears, she finally understands, and SpongeBob proudly apologizes to his ancestor for not recognizing him sooner.
The episode ends with SpongeBob reflecting that perhaps, one day, his own name might be remembered just as fondly. In an epilogue set back in the Old West, SpongeBuck and Pecos Patrick singing their trademark duet, "Idiot Friends", at the Kantina.
Appearance[]
SpongeBuck SquarePants is a sponge, and he looks very similar to his descendant, SpongeBob SquarePants. The only major difference is the clothing. SpongeBuck has a bowtie, a black bowler hat with a bell, a striped shirt, and a pocket watch (tucked into his pocket; the chain hangs loose). SpongeBuck was also fairly easy to please, and he loved to Spurskate.
