Squim is the titular deuteragonist of the Smiling Friends episode "Squim Returns." He's the first ever employee at Smiling Friends Inc., now retired since 2001.
Squim is summoned by a whistle to fill in for a last job with Pim Pimling when Charlie Dompler is absent from work.
He was voiced by the series co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Charlie Dompler, Glep, Gwimbly, Plilford, and the Bug of Knowledge in the same series.
Appearance[]
Squim is a round creature with yellow skin and arms and legs extending from his head/torso. He has large oval eyes with one pupil larger than the other and a blue sclera, along with prominent eyelids and a wide mouth. He also has three strands of hair.
He wears white cartoonish gloves on his hands, a large blue bow tie, and huge red shoes with white laces and green soles. He is animated with a slight "cel shadow" effect and resembles 90's animation, befitting his original status.
After his death, he wholly becomes a pale blue, translucent ghost, and gains a wispy tail.
Personality[]
| “ | Never - and I mean never - let anyone ever tell you that you should not be positive because it’s the only mode you should be in! | „ |
| ~ Squim to Pim Pimling. |
Squim is a highly excitable and eccentric character, almost always seen dancing and smiling. He believes that positivity is the key at all times and the only mode one should be in. He even manages to solve a domestic dispute in seconds that Pim Pimling claims would've normally taken much longer. However, it's to the point where it eventually becomes grating, even to the endlessly optimistic Pim.
Squim also lacks social awareness and tries to use positivity even when it's inappropriate, such as dancing after hearing that Mr. Ice Cream's wife passed away. He appears a bit unhinged when he runs around town trying to cheer people up to make up for it, even chucking a wheelchaired man into an oncoming car, and eventually causing the police to shoot him dead due to his "Squim Dance."
After being shot as a ghost and going through surgery, Squim becomes disabled and is considerably less wacky and lively than he was before, as noted by Mr. Boss. Despite this, doodles from Kosperry, his creator reveal he's begun recovering and is mostly back to his usual happy and wacky self, even gaining the ability to fly.
Biography[]
Squim was Mr. Boss' first hire at Smiling Friends Inc. until his retirement in 2001. With Charlie sick, Boss whistles in Squim to help out Pim, and so Squim follows Pim into the sewers, finding a rat and a maggot fighting over a pile of garbage. Squim's dancing works when the rat and maggot immediately become friends again.
After this win, Squim and Pim go get ice cream. Pim tells Squim he's glad to work with someone so cheerful, unlike Charlie, and wants to team up with him more. Squim compliments the shop and licks the camera and ice cream case. The owner, Mr. Ice Cream, says he opened the shop with his late wife Phyllis 30 years ago. Squim fails to read the room and does the "Squim Dance" to cheer him up, which only makes Mr. Ice Cream cry. Pim tells Squim to stop and pulls him outside.
Pim explains that being cheerful all the time is not inherently right, wanting Squim to tone it down a notch. Squim seems to get it, but then says he just wasn't being positive enough and bounds away bothering people. He hands flowers to a woman and angers her boyfriend, pushes a wheelchair-bound elder toward a bus, and dances on a homeless man trying to sleep.
Squim eventually sees police cornering Charlie and does the "Squim Dance" in front of them. One of the cops yells, "He's doing the Squim Dance, shoot him." They do so many times until he falls down, and his cartoon ghost comes out of his body - which they also shoot. His ghost ends up in the hospital, still recovering from getting shot after a 14-hour surgery, where he tries to greet Pim, Charlie and Boss.

Trivia[]
- Squim serves as a dark parallel to Pim. Whereas Pim tries his best to make people smile at their own pace, Squim is completely convinced that being sad in any way, shape or form is terrible and that everyone should be happy at all times, which makes him completely unable to read the room and ultimately costs him his life..
- Squim was designed by character artist Kosperry, who had previously made Smiling Friends fanart.[1]
- Squim's entrance appears to be a reference to a specific scene in Scary Movie.
- Squim is the fifth instance of the "Fifth Smiling Friend" running gag, after Smormu, Jombo, Tyler, and the Blue Janitor Dude.
- He resembles the Smiling Friends building, which may have been designed after him.
- The episode's synopsis (intentionally) incorrectly states that Pim created Squim with a magic mirror.
- Squim sings a parody of "Get Down Tonight" by KC and the Sunshine Band.
