For Hearts long lost and full of fright.
For those alone in Blackest Night.
Accept our ring and join our fight.
Love conquers all with Violet's light!
~ Star Sapphire Corps oath

The Star Sapphire Corps is one of the key Lantern Corps within the Green Lantern franchise, wielding the Violet Light of Love from the Emotional Spectrum. Powered by love, the Corps is composed primarily of women who have experienced great love and loss, granting them the ability to channel that emotional energy into powerful constructs and cosmic abilities.

While initially antagonistic under the control of the Zamarons, the Star Sapphire Corps evolved into cosmic protectors, fighting to preserve love in the universe while aligning themselves with the Green Lantern Corps against greater threats, especially during the Blackest Night and Brightest Day storylines.

History[]

Background[]

The Zamarons, a race of immortal females who split from the Guardians of the Universe, discovered the Violet Light of Love and forged it into Star Sapphire crystals. Realizing the crystal’s potential to harness love as a cosmic force, the Zamarons began recruiting individuals to wield its power, forming the Star Sapphire Corps to protect and enforce love across the universe.

Originally, the violet crystal possessed hosts and turned them into Star Sapphires against their will, but as the Corps evolved, the Zamarons learned to control the crystal’s influence, allowing chosen members to retain their identities while wielding its power.

The Star Sapphire Corps plays a crucial role during major cosmic events, including:

  • Blackest Night: They fight against the Black Lantern Corps, using the power of love to combat death.
  • Brightest Day: The Corps continues to aid in the stabilization of the Emotional Spectrum, fighting against chaos and despair.
  • War of the Green Lanterns: The Star Sapphires assist the Green Lantern Corps against the influence of Krona and Parallax.

While at times the Corps’ interpretation of love has led to conflicts with the Green Lanterns, they have become valuable allies in protecting the universe against forces that threaten emotional balance.

Notable Storylines[]

  • Sinestro Corps War: The Corps begins to emerge during the conflict with the Sinestro Corps.
  • Blackest Night: The Star Sapphire Corps becomes a key player in fighting the Black Lantern Corps and the forces of death.
  • Brightest Day: The Corps continues to stabilize the Emotional Spectrum and recruit new members.
  • New Guardians: Members of different Lantern Corps, including a Star Sapphire, unite to combat cosmic threats.

Philosophy[]

The Star Sapphire Corps operates under the belief that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming fear, rage, and despair. While initially prone to forcibly imposing their vision of love, the Corps evolved into protectors of free will and genuine love, believing that protecting love means preserving life across the universe.

Powers and Abilities[]

Members of the Star Sapphire Corps wield Violet Power Rings and crystals, granting:

  • Construct Creation: Hard-light constructs fueled by love, limited only by the bearer’s imagination.
  • Flight: Capable of interstellar travel at high speeds.
  • Teleportation: Through violet energy manipulation.
  • Energy Projection: Offensive and defensive violet energy blasts.
  • Crystallization: Can encase targets in violet crystals to either protect or imprison them.
  • Resurrection: The violet light can revive the dead in some cases.
  • Empathy and Emotional Detection: Can sense and manipulate emotions, especially love.
  • Ring Duplication: Rings can duplicate themselves to recruit new members.
  • Healing: Violet light can heal physical and emotional wounds.

Notable Members[]

  • Carol Ferris: The most prominent Star Sapphire, long-time love interest of Hal Jordan, and leader within the Corps.
  • Fatality (Yrra Cynril): Former enemy of the Green Lantern Corps who joined the Star Sapphire Corps to find redemption through love.
  • Miri Riam: A Daxamite who joined the Corps after the death of her husband, embodying the Corps’ ideals of enduring love.
