The Star Spirits are a group of seven powerful stars who reside in Star Haven and watch over the wish-granting Star Rod. They debuted in the video game Paper Mario and later made appearances in the Mario Party series.

Paper Mario[]
The Star Spirits are powerful wishing Stars that grant wishes from the Dream Deport at Star Haven; a place where Star Kids eventually ascend to high in the sky.
One day, the Star Spirits were imprisoned by Bowser so he could steal the magical Star Rod to make his own wishes come true. Their imprisonment significantly weakened their powers, but they still held enough of it to contact Mario after he was defeated by Bowser wielding the Star Rod. The Star Spirits told Mario to make his way to Shooting Star Summit where they explained to him the situation and revealed that they can dispel the Star Rod's power once all of them are freed from the clutches of Bowser's strongest minions.
Mario travels across the Mushroom Kingdom and rescues each of the Star Spirits from captivity, allowing him to defeat Bowser using their power. However their success was anticipated, as Bowser was able to increase his power further so not even the Star Spirits could stop him. Just when things looked bleak for the heroes, the wishes made by Princess Peach strengthened the Star Spirits enough to overcome Bowser's power and finally take back the Star Rod.
