~ Starfire cries to her Team |
Starfire is one of the main characters in the DC Animated Movie Universe and one of the two main protagonists of the 2017 film Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. She is a Tamaranian princess who escaped to Earth and joined and became the new leader of the Teen Titans.
She was voiced by Kari Wahlgren, who also voiced Emma Frost in Wolverine and the X-Men, Kitana in Mortal Kombat 11 and both Kitana and Mileena in Mortal Kombat 1.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
She was sold to the Gordanians by her sister, Blackfire. She escaped to Earth and met the Teen Titans (which consisted of Robin (Dick Grayson), Bumblebee, Speedy, Kid Flash and Beast Boy) who saved her. She kissed Dick in order to learn English. She joined the team and started dating Nightwing. She then became the leader of the team to help those of their gifts.
Batman vs Robin[]
Starfire makes a cameo on Nightwing's phone. The two planned to go on a date but it cancelled when Nightwing discovered that Damian Wayne escaped while Nightwing was supposed to be looking after him.
Batman: Bad Blood[]
Starfire makes another cameo in another phone call, however, she is audible. She and Nightwing planned to go on another date, and she admits that she misses his touch, but their date was cancelled by Nightwing after a fight with Blockbuster.
Justice League vs Teen Titans[]
She first appears in the training room and informs her teammates Raven, Blue Beetle and Beast Boy that they are getting a new member. She and the team welcomed Damian who was the new "Robin" with open arms but he brushed them off. The next day, she tries to get Damian to let others have a turn at training, but he doesn't listen. After Robin begins to disrespect Starfire and the others, Blue Beetle and him get into a fight. After the Scarab on Blue Beetle's armor blasted Robin's face, Starfire breaks up the fight. After Robin is healed, he tries to research Raven's origins but finds nothing on Starfire's laptop. She told him that the team didn't know anything about Raven's past before Damian leaves believing that she knows nothing. Starfire then had a video chat with Dick about Damian's issues before he tells her that she can't expect Damian to be a people person. He then gave her the idea of going to the carnival. She takes the group to the carnival to get used to each other.
After Trigon's attack Raven, Starfire and the other fight them off. Raven then reveals her origins to them. After they get back to the tower, Damian thinks of keeping her with the other Titans and Starfire agrees. When the Justice League arrive to take Raven away, they are taken under control by Trigon (except Batman who uses Bane's venom to draw away Trigon's power from him). The Titans try to protect her but are overpowered and Raven gives herself in to free Trigon. After Raven leaves with the possessed Justice League (But Blue Beetle manages to free Cyborg from Trigon's control), the Titans manage to find the location to where Raven is. After Raven sets Trigon free, the Justice League are free from his control, the Titans go to Hell to get the crystal that can imprison Trigon again. They fight through demons and after Raven is able to trap Trigon again, she decides to stay in Hell to keep an eye on Trigon, but the other Titans assure her that her home is with them. After the Justice League thank the Titans, Cyborg arrives at the tower with Pizza where they eat in celebration.
Teen Titans: The Judas Contract[]
A flashback shows that her origin matches her TV series version in which the Titans rescued her from the Gordanians and she learned the English language just by kissing Robin. In the present, she accepts Dick's offer to share an apartment. Though she is unsure of her role as leader, Dick reassures he chose her as the team's leader and his girlfriend for a reason.
The Titans infiltrate a criminal warehouse, with Starfire leading, though Nightwing accidentally interrupting at times due to habit from when he was leader; Starfire in turn unintentionally reveals details of their love life, which makes it awkward for the team. However, all are able to organise to take down the villains, and gather intel before the warehouse is destroyed.
The Titans have new member Tara Markov AKA Terra, whose obstinate antisocial manner makes it difficult for her to become cohesive with the team; thus, Starfire arranges for a few team-building exercises to help Terra. During one such exercise, which is combat training, Beast Boy - because of his crush on Terra - becomes a snake to hug her and kiss her cheek, but this provokes a violently angry response, as Terra's geokinesis powers almost kill Beast Boy if not for Nightwing and Blue Beetle.
From Nightwing taking the lead on the mission and the accident at training, Starfire feels doubt about her ability to lead the Teen Titans; but Nightwing reassures her, while asking her to reach the next stage of their relationship by moving in with him into his apartment, to which she agreed.
From an idea by Raven, the team organise a one year anniversary party for Terra to make her feel more welcome, and hopefully allay the emotional struggles that she wasn't sharing.
Since Terra was a mole working for Deathstroke, she gave him data that allowed him to ambush the team, including Starfire, and Terra ambushing Raven, thus the whole team, with only Nightwing getting away due to presumed death, taken into Deathstroke's custody; the mercenary was in turn hired by immortal cult leader, Brother Blood, who wished to have the Titans for his machine that would harvest their superpowers and abilities, then transfer them to him. As Nightwing had, to Deathstroke's knowledge, died and fell into the sea, Blood was short one hero, so instead Deathstroke betrayed Terra, surrendering her to the power transference machine.
Brother Blood activated the machine, absorbing the talents and powers of the prisoners, yet halfway through the process, Nightwing - who had survived and infiltrated Blood's lair - throws explosive projectiles at the machine, making it explode and freeing the prisoners. However, Blood was unharmed as he had absorbed enough powers and skills to replicate each of the prior prisoner's talents; Starfire is able to direct the team to counterattack all of Blood's attacks, as despite the stolen powers and intuition he had, he lacked the practice and overall skill the original owners had, as well as lacked the support that the Titans had for each other.
When near defeat, Brother Blood ranted about his supremacy, before getting swept away by a wave of boulders from Terra, who was chasing after Deathstroke, seeking vengeance for his betrayal. Nightwing and Robin fought Deathstroke, but are forced to retreat as Terra's destructive powers rend the environment apart, which triggers a collapse of the arena. Raven conjures a spell that expels all of the stolen powers from Blood, leaving him an emaciated wreck, but refusing to accept his defeat out of disbelief of wasted centuries; Blood is executed by gun shot from his right-hand woman, Mother Mayhem, as she loved him and wished to spare his eternal life from prison.
Deathstroke appeared to accept his death with an affectionate remark to Terra, before he falls into a pit, which is buried by debris; the entire arena collapsed, but Nightwing and Starfire are able to help the Titans avoid injury and death, although can't reach Terra, whose emotional breakdown drove her powers even more chaotic, but Terra intentionally blocked them from reaching her so she could commit suicide because of her remorse, yet without harming them again.
Beast Boy is able to unbury Terra, but due to suffering fatal injuries from the collapse, she shortly died afterward. Starfire and Nightwing offer comfort to Beast Boy, though understand his grief will take time. After overcoming this latest challenge, Starfire felt confident in her role as leader and older sister figure for the team, thus she organised a memorial party in honour of Terra.
Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans[]
Starfire appears in this movie, where she meets her counterpart from the Go! universe and her counterpart from the 2003 universe.
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War:[]
She is killed by the Paradooms of Darkseid and then mechanically brought back to life as one of the Lord of Apokolips' final Furies. She and the Furies battle the subsequent Apokolips raid team, with Raven attempting to appeal to her, however, failing as the mind-control was too powerful. Starfire and the others are later freed from their mental controls when Constantine undoes the source from Cyborg, and escaped Apokolips before Cyborg sent it and Darkseid through a boom tube into a void of nothingness.
While Nightwing had died in the Paradoom invasion and been driven mad by resurrection from the Lazarus Pit, he was able to calmly rest on Starfire's lap, as she kindly and sadly stroked his hair, showing that deep within his shattered mind, there was something of him left to find comfort by her presence. She looked up as the Flash initiated another Flashpoint, with the white void of light enveloping everything as time and space are undone to be remade; she peacefully accepted the second death she had to face in as so many years.
Personality[]
Starfire is first and foremost a very kind and caring person, and despite the fact that she is not of Earth, she is just as human at heart as any of her friends and teammates. Due to her cultural differences, she does have some quirks to her that many of her teammates do not share. One of them is her utter indiscretion regarding the sexual side of her relationship with Dick Grayson, which has caused him to become embarrassed on more than one occasion; although she noted his is "quite proficient". Another is her lack of familiarity with human culture, which she attempts to mend via various outings as a form of bonding and team building for the Titans.
While feeling content and a sense of belonging in the Titans, Starfire's deposing by her sister is still a sore spot; when Damian bluntly demeans her leadership capabilities by mentioning her ousting, she corrects him that it was a coup, with the semantic difference still showing an uncharacteristic melancholy from her.
Starfire is a decisive and capable leader in most circumstances, with the likes of Superman complimenting her on her pragmatism and ability to listen to her team. Starfire also enjoys teaching, as she leads most of the team's training sessions, usually by herself or in conjunction with Nightwing. She often plays the role of surrogate sister to her teammates, most notably with Beast Boy and Raven. However, she has difficulties with connecting to Damian, whose ruthlessness and one-track mind has caused her great discomfort. She inspired strong loyalty and respect from her team, as despite Robin antagonising Blue Beetle with everyone, it wasn't until he insulted Starfire that Beetle opted to retaliate, Though Robin's negative has been remedied by the time of Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, likely due to Nightwing's advice, trying to ease his adopted brother into the fold, as well as him bonding with his teammates, particularly Raven. Apparently, Damian approves of her as a match for his brother, giving them his approval when Starfire and Dick moved in together, which is more notably by virtue of Damian usually being highly cynical about romantic relationships.
She can be insecure like she is unsure of her role as leader, Dick reassures he chose her as the team's leader and his girlfriend for a reason, and the team accepts and respects her to lead them.

Trivia[]
- This version is portrayed as being serious and focused with helping others.
- Terra sarcastically calls Starfire "Princess Sparkle-thong". Ironically enough, in Starfire wears one in uniform as seen when she "suits up" to fight Trigon's emissaries. While off-screen, in Batman vs. Robin on a phone call with Dick, she claimed to be wearing a particular thong he liked as to entice him to visit.
- Her "suiting up" sequence is visually and practically similar to magical girl transformations in anime.
- She is one of the only versions who remains in a relationship with Dick Grayson. The other is in Teen Titans (2003).
- Her sister, Blackfire, never physically appeared in the franchise.
- Ironically, this becomes the second time a planned final confrontation between Starfire and Blackfire in animation was canceled. While Blackfire had a few episodes in Teen Titans (2003), there was a planned sixth season that would have featured Blackfire in a major role, as the season would have had Starfire as the primary protagonist - just like previous seasons had for the other Titans; as the show was canceled, this planned story never happened (albeit did to an extent in some tie-in comics to a degree). Likewise, the DCAMU was rebooted with a final Flashpoint before the intended Blackfire story arc could be done.
- Like many DCAMU characters, her final appearance is in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War; she has no lines in the film, largely since she spends the majority of it as a brainwashed cybernetic member of Darkseid's Furies. Her mind is eventually freed. She is last seen comforting the insane Dick Grayson before Flash triggers another Flashpoint, erasing everyone from existence, in the hope they will be reborn in the next universe.
