You see, what I... did... Well, part of me still can't believe I had it in me to do that, but there's no denying it happened. I did it. It was real.

History[]

In the comic series, she is known by her superhero alias, Starlight. She has the ability to emit blinding light from her hands and also the ability to fly. Annie was born with her abilities and accidentally permanently blinded her parents and the doctors present upon birth. Faced with an increased cost of living due to their disability, her parents were forced to give up custody of Annie to Vought. She was raised by foster parents and attended several superhero pageants as a child.

She received no real love from her foster parents, however, as they viewed her as a show pony more than anything else, and were only caring as long as she preformed well in the pageants. She joined the Seven after the death of previous member Lamplighter, leaving her previous superhero group Young Americans. She is quickly rattled after finding that her membership to The Seven comes at a high price—sexual activity with the male members. Similarly to the show, Starlight is coerced into performing oral sex on Homelander, Black Noir, and A-Train. She continues to be mistreated, but gradually learns to stand up for herself, particularly in her interactions with A-Train. This culminates in Starlight temporarily blinding him when he attempts to rape her.

Shortly after joining The Seven, Starlight enters into a relationship with Hughie Campbell, although neither are aware of the other's real profession. When Annie finally confesses to being a superhero, Hughie is shocked and hurt. He considers resuming the relationship, but is further hurt when he is manipulated by Butcher into watching Starlight perform oral sex on members of The Seven. Without knowing the full context of what he just witnessed, Hughie is furious and breaks up with Annie after insulting her.

She later tracks Hughie down to Auchterladle, his hometown, where the two are able to partially rekindle their relationship after he apologizes for insulting her. Their relationship remains strained, however, and Annie eventually leaves Hughie due to him being unable to move past the events he witnessed. Despite this, the two rekindle their relationship at the end of the comic and presumably live happily ever after.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Serum-Based Powers: Annie's powers were transmitted to her when she was in the womb thanks to Compound V, a certain serum that augmented her physical body. When her mother was pregnant, she received a serum that gave her powers. If Annie later has sex and conceives children with non-superpowered people, (but not limited to), her offspring may inherit her powers and abilities.
    • Supernatural Durability: To withstand her extraordinary strength, Annie is supremely durable, able to withstand above-normal shocks, as well as her own strength, her internal and external tissues, as well as her musculoskeletal structure are all extremely resistant to the traumas and pressures exerted by her force.
    • Supernatural Strength: Although the extent of her strength has not been explored, it is considered that she has received a fairly high dose of Compound V, which has probably given her super-strength, an unrefined medium super-strength of Compound V, making her capable of lifting tens of thousands of pounds up to hundreds of thousands of pounds and performing any offensive action with the force of destructive conventional explosives. Annie can lift and move many construction vehicles such as bulldozers, backhoes, graders, tanks, or trucks weighing several thousand pounds.
    • Electrical Absorption: Annie can absorb electricity, while withdrawing it from the source, into her body and use it in a variety of ways, gaining some form of advantage, either by improving herself, gaining drained power, using it as an energy source, etc. Starlight can even or rather invoke and absorb lightning from the atmosphere (storm clouds or ionized air) to enhance themselves, instead of relying on external sources in their environment. Starlight's main power is to absorb electrical energy and convert it into any type of energy and vice versa, i.e., to absorb any type of energy and transform it into one of the basic energies known as electricity.
    • Light-Energy Attacks: Starlight can release/use light energy for attacks of various shapes and/or intensities, either projected or used as part of melee attacks, etc.
    • Bioluminescence: Starlight can generate bioluminescence, i.e., light produced and emitted by a living organism, often as a result of a chemical reaction, especially when she uses her electrical capabilities.
    • Flight: By manipulating her own-gravi Starlight is able to levitate and fly very easily and unaided, and pretty high as well, being able to stay in flight for unlimited periods. Starlight is able to survive and adapt to extremely high or low atmospheric pressure (without becoming disoriented or deprived of normal breathing capacity), as well as high wind friction; this is accompanied by an innate immunity to vertigo and/or fear of heights.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Thanks to Compound V, Annie can regenerate way faster than the average human, healing from great wounds in a matter oh hours or a couple of days, such as cuts, stab wounds, falls, bone fractures, bullet wounds as well as several others Blunt-Force Traumas.

Trivia[]

  • Starlight is a parody of both Doctor Light and Stargirl as well Mary Marvel costume with little Powergirl-influenced outfit.
  • Ennis has stated that the relationship was not originally planned: "Annie started out as a joke, and was actually going to degenerate further in terms of the shit she'd put up with, the degradation she'd suffer just to be in the world's premier superteam. But I found myself writing Hughie moping in Central Park, and then to my great surprise I saw Annie coming walking down the path. That was when I realized I wanted to take her in a different direction, make her stronger and more rounded… I probably felt a bit guilty about Annie and ended up treating her a bit more responsibly as a result."
  • Starlight appears in the Amazon adaptation of the series, portrayed by Erin Moriarty.
