Steve is the deuteragonist of the 2025 fantasy action-adventure film A Minecraft Movie, the film adaptation of Mojang's Minecraft video games franchise.
He is a human that was originally born on Earth and had a fascination of entering a mineshaft when he was young, only being prevented from entering from an old miner. Finally growing up to adulthood, Steve was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of mining without intervention and finds a mysterious cube while digging that leads him to a whole new world made of blocks, dubbed the Overworld. He since has inhabited the Overworld and took residence in a village while innovating all sorts of contraptions and befriending the creatures there. Many years later, he meets a quartet of misfits who discover the Overworld and have to defend it from a hostile race known as the Piglins as well as being captured by their leader, Malgosha.
He is portrayed by Jack Black, who also portrayed Dewey Finn in School of Rock, R.L. Stine in the Goosebumps movies, Ignacio/Nacho in Nacho Libre, Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon (Bethany Walker and Fridge Johnson's avatar) in the Jumanji films, Jonathan Barnavelt in The House with a Clock in its Walls, and Claptrap in Borderlands, and voiced Lenny in Shark Tale and Po in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. As a child, he is portrayed by Bram Scott-Breheny.

Biography[]
Growing up on Earth, Steve often dreamed of exploring mines. However, an old man would always chase him away whenever he got too close to the mine shaft. As an adult, Steve found himself stuck in a dead-end job as a doorknob salesman. One day, he remembered his childhood dream of becoming a miner and decided to pursue it. He bought a pick axe, and helmet and managed to slip past the old man and enter the mine for the first time. While exploring and digging for various materials, he discovered a mysterious cubic artifact known as the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal. He soon realized that when combined, these artifacts created a portal that transported him to a new world entirely made of blocks, called the Overworld, where the terrain is composed of easily manipulable cubes.
In the Overworld, Steve spent several years creating all sorts of incredible inventions and building various locations. During this time, he tamed a wolf and named him Dennis. Eventually, Steve moved to Midport Village, where he set up a secret stash to hide his loot. One day, he and Dennis stumbled upon a ruined Nether portal and activated it, allowing them to enter this new dimension. However, the inhabitants of the Nether, known as Piglins, along with their leader Malgosha, kidnapped Steve while Dennis managed to escape back to the Overworld. In an attempt to protect Steve, Dennis traveled to Earth and hid the orb under Steve's bed in his old house.
Eventually years pass and Steve is made a slave by Malgosha in the Nether until they realize that the Orb of Dominance has been combined with the Earth Crystal again. Steve immediately realizes that someone has found his artifacts and prepares to escape before Malgosha prevents him from doing such. Steve does eventually escape back to the Overworld and saves a group of people wielding the Orb from a hoard of zombies. The group, individually known as Henry, Natalie, Dawn, and Garrett Garrison all meet Steve.
He takes them to the village, where he tells them he needs their help to get to the Woodland Mansion to find a replacement Crystal after the original one broke. He takes Henry and Garrett into his house, and shows them his crafting table. Suddenly, the village is attacked by the Piglins, lead by General Chungus, looking for the Orb of Dominance.
Steve, Henry, and Garrett manage to escape, but get separated from Dawn and Natalie. They decide to go find the mansion on their own.
As the Misfits are ready to leave back to the real world, Steve performs a song to Dennis as they part ways, with his former pet wolf now being the owner of Dawn. However, he claims that he will continue to live in the Overworld, until some encouragement from Natalie, who requests he brings the magic into the real world that joins the Misfits and goes back to Earth with them. Back on Earth, Steve now becomes an employee at Game Over World (now renamed to The Over World) and assists development of their own arcade game, Block City Battle Buddies, which turns out to be successful among the store customers. Additionally, he also starts a duo band with Garrett as they perform inside the store.
Sometime later, Steve revisits his old house to retrieve his stuff, only to find out that a new owner had claimed ownership and moved into it while he was away. This person is named Alex and she offers to invite Steve inside to hang out.
