Steven Steel is a secondary ally in the story of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. He is the promoter of Steel Ball Run race and works against President Funny Valentine primarily to save Lucy and later Johnny Joestar.

Personality[]

In Steven's youth he had a knack and stubborn drive for success that would often lead him into trouble, either during his time working as a circus performer or debt collecting boxer. On the surface Steven Steel appears to be a highly arrogant and rude promoter that does not care for the ramifications of his cross country wide race multiple characters point out the seeming depravity he has a for marrying the 14 year old Lucy Steel. However under this facade Steven is a largely composed man that cares little for his public reputation as long as his loved ones safety and ambitions are met. For the first time meeting Lucy she encouraged him to start the Steel Ball Run race while he was drunk and penniless, after seeking to thank her had been alerted by Lucy's father she was on the verge of being sold and trafficked to the mafia, so Steven intervened lying to the mafia that Lucy was to be his wife in order to protect her from being trafficked. During their time together Steven treated Lucy akin to a daughter and a friend urging her to go to school and refusing to do anything that would make her uncomfortable.

However Steel can be immature and volatile at times as he would frequently get into fist fights when he was drunk and broke, bursting into tears Infront of Lucy when he feels there's too much pressure on him, or demoting Gyro Zeppeli from his 1st place spot in the race due to his unclear background. Over time Steven grows more concerned with his main sponsor Funny Valentine as he realizes he is sending his men to to retrieve the corpse of the holy saint by any means necessary and begins to distance himself from the president. Steven at his core is highly noble, as even with multiple untreated gunshot wounds he goes out of his way to take Lucy away from Valentine's vicinity disregarding his injuries and entrusting Gyro to take her to safety.

History[]

Background[]

Steven Steel was born in either 1837 or 1840 given conflicting reports of his age, as the fourth son of an Irish immigrant. When he was 15 he fell in love with a florist daughter, but she died in a carriage accident within the same year greatly depressing him. A year later Steven joined the cavalry but was never sent to wars nor expeditions and after catching a fever he spent two years in a deserted island hospital. For the next 5 years, Steven got a job as a circus performer gaining high notoriety, but was fired for bossing around the other performers. For the three years he worked as a debt collecting boxer, but angered the local mafia when he went against script causing them to shoot him in the knee. Steven disappeared for the next 13 years and then reappeared as an adventurer searching for dinosaurs in Costa Rica. Two years later, he dubbed himself a promoter and all the newspapers talked about him.

One day, a scandal about a monkey disguised as an alien caused him to be dubbed as a fraud, even though he was unrelated to the scandal. He was ultimately forced to sell his mansion. Now broke, Steven attempted a last effort to start, a long distance horse-ride, searching for sponsors to no avail.

While drunk a 12 year old Lucy Pendleton came to him with the idea of a race across the entire American continent with a winning prize of 50 million dollars. Steel brushes off the premise as ridiculous and gets into a bar fight. The next day, a group of people surrounded him and asked about the cross-continental race, willing to sponsor it. Within a year the newly elected president Funny Valentine hears of Steven's cross-continental race and becomes the main sponsor in secret, using it as an opportunity to claim the corpse parts of the holy saint that were scattered across the country. Steven and Valentine organized the race together, choosing each steps of the race to uncover the Saint's Corpse while Steven Steel promoted the race to all newspapers.

In early 1890, Steven remembers Lucy inspiring him to start the race and found her residence, speaking to her father on wanting to repay his favor, however her father told him that he was forced to sell his daughter to the mafia. Steven realized the implications and explained to her father that the mafia was going to traffic her, so Steven told her father to lie that Lucy was "damaged goods' and that she was to be married to him in order force the mafia into giving her up.

While this worked and Steven and Lucy got officially married to seal the deal to the mafia, she offered to genuinely have a wife and husband relationship when she got older. Steven immediately refused and told Lucy to go to school, grow up, marry someone her age, and live a normal life. The story the public was given, however was that Steven fell madly in love with the 14 year old Lucy after being reminded by his childhood crush and asked her father to let him marry her, though Steven did not bother to correct the record.

Steel Ball Run[]

As the promoter of the Steel Ball Run race, Steven is present in San Diego to give his final presentation of the race, oversee the organization of the starting line, and welcome important observers. For the remainder of the race, Steel acts as a figurehead and observer to the race.

During the first stage, Steven notices Gyro Zeppeli's performance and orders a background check and docks his points over suspicion.. After the first stage, Steven is brought to a crime scene and sees three corpses of three racers. Not wanting to stop the race, Steven allows the sheriff to bring in Mountain Tim to investigate the matter.

Later onboard a train he questions to one of his employees on if Gyro had found a corpse part, to which Valentine confirmed and ordered his assassination in order to retrieve, greatly disturbing Steven.

Unbeknownst to him, Lucy also discovers the true goal of the Steel Ball Run and acts behind his back to keep the Corpse Parts out of Valentine's reach. Her operation ends when she infiltrates a presidential facility and must disguise herself as Scarlet Valentine. Hot Pants fakes Lucy's death in order to protect her; this shocks Steven, but he later realizes that Lucy's corpse is not genuine.

While looking for Lucy, Steven was shot multiple times by Magent Magent and held captive by Funny Valentine, who swore to Lucy that he would not kill Steven. Steven regained consciousness just in time to save Lucy from the effects of Valentine's D4C:Love Train, passing her to Gyro so she could be taken to safety, but was then brutalized by a furious Valentine. After Valentine's defeat and Death, Steven, Lucy, and Johnny realize the Saint' s corpse has been stolen and warns Johnny that the thief will likely attempt to seal it in an underground church in Valentines steed. Lucy figures out the thief is a parallel Diego Brando so she decapitates the corpse of the Original Diego with the intent of killing the former. While she does this, Steven mounts a horse and goes to save Johnny from his stand ability. Following the end of the race Steven donates its funds to multiple charities, by 1941 Steven dies of natural causes.
