~ Stitch admits to being bad, but Lilo assures him that he isn't, that he's just not perfect like every other family. |
Stitch, also known as Experiment 626 ("six-two-six") as a birth name, is the titular main protagonist of the 2025 science fiction comedy film Lilo & Stitch, the live-action remake of the 2002 animated feature film of the same name.
Like his animated counterpart, he is an illegal alien genetic experiment who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. Upon arriving on Earth, he was mistaken for a dog by a girl named Lilo, who adopts him to mend her fractured family, unaware that Stitch is being pursued by aliens sent by the United Galactic Federation to capture him. He is also based off his original incarnation of the same name.
He is voiced by Chris Sanders, who also played his animated incarnation.
Physical Appearance[]
Stitch's appearance is quite similar to that of his animated counterpart, being a small koala-like creature with dark blue fur all over his body, with lighter patches from his thorax to his stomach and around his eyes, as well as black markings on his back. He has large floppy ears similar to that of rabbits and fennec foxes, a black nose between his two equally black eyes, and a large mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. He has four claws on each hand, four toes and a very small round tail. In his full form, he has a second row of arms, two antennae on his head, and three spines on his back, all of which Stitch can retract to appear less alien.
Personality[]
Genetically programmed from the outset, Stitch has a highly destructive personality, as well as being chaotic, carefree, mischievous, and stubborn. His destructive nature is manifested primarily by his delight in wrecking havoc around him for his own amusement, indifferent to the consequences of his actions even when it harms others. Despite his thinking and calculating abilities superior to those of a supercomputer, Stitch has a childish demeanor and prefers to have fun more than anything else, whether by causing trouble, breaking things, being a jerk, or fiddling with anything in sight. He also enjoys films featuring destructive monsters.
Stitch's desire for freedom is as powerful as his chaotic nature, wanting to continue doing whatever he wants without restraint, even if it means being aggressive or devious. He came up with the idea of using Lilo to maintain the greatest freedom of movement due to Jumba and Peakley trying to capture him, posing as a loving dog to gain Lilo's unwitting help. While he continued to cause trouble, he unexpectedly bonded with the little girl due to her being an outcast herself, the two getting up to some mischief together, with Stitch remaining the most irresponsible and carefree. Arriving at Lilo and Nani's house, Stitch continued to act without consideration for others' feelings about his rampages, until Lilo began teaching him the concept of family, something he would never have understood on his own. He then slowly began to enjoy the thrill of it more than the rampages, but especially with Lilo's company.
Nearly causing Lilo to drown had a profound impact on Stitch. He finally realized the consequences of his own selfish and careless nature, feeling both ashamed and horrible for having hurt the only person he had come to consider his only friend, showing that his programming had faded for good. In addition to feeling bad, Stitch would eventually realize that he had caused nothing but trouble for the Pelekai family since entering their lives, feeling beyond guilty about the sisters' separation by social services. Out of guilt, Stitch chose to leave rather than cause further harm.
When Lilo found him later, Stitch admitted to breaking up her family, just as he admitted that he is bad, but Lilo stated that he wasn't bad, that he had just done mischief that didn't define his true nature and that in a family it's normal not to be perfect, deeply touching Stitch's newfound sensitive heart, the blue creature happy that Lilo still loves him despite his faults and mistakes. When Jumba denounced Stitch for using Lilo in the first place, Stitch chose to surrender once more out of guilt and because he cared too much for her to cause her more pain. After Lilo came to freedom on Jumba's ship, Stitch did everything to protect his best friend, even going so far as to prevent her from sacrificing her life to save him from drowning, accepting his end if it meant Lilo would survive, out of love. Following his rescue by Nani, Stitch openly told the Grand Councilor that Lilo and Nani were his family, albeit small and broken, but still suited him, words that led the Grand Councilor to see that Stitch had truly changed for the better. Having become a member of the Pelakai family, Stitch considers Lilo and Nani as his sisters.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Enhanced strength: Despite his small size, Stitch possesses incredible strength, easily capable of lifting several tons of metal, twist the bars of a dog cage and practically demolish an armored safe without too much effort.
- Enhanced durability: Stitch is completely laser-proof and survived the crash of his ship on Kauai, emerging unharmed. His internal organism is also resilient, as demonstrated by his consumption of the contents of a lava lamp.
- Enhanced speed and agility: Stitch is capable of quickly running on all fours and is shown to be much more agile than any human.
- Enhanced senses: Stitch has a powerful sense of smell that allows him to smell odors beyond the reach of humans and also has highly developed hearing which allows him to hear better than humans and over a wider range.
- Hyper-cognition: Stitch possesses immense cognitive abilities, able to think faster than over a hundred supercomputers and even able to beat Jumba at chess. It took him less than a minute to figure out how to fool the turrets locked on his DNA to escape captivity.
- Digging skills: Stitch can dig his way beneath the ground at a rapid speed.
- Audio amplifier: Stitch has demonstrated the ability to act as an audio amplifier, radio, and/or microphone, illustrated when he uses his claw as the needle on a record player and plays music through his open mouth like a sound horn.
- Master driver: Stitch is a proficient and skilled driver, adept at driving vehicles. He is easily able to tinker with a children's electric car and even boost its speed.
- Multilingualism: Stitch adapts and can understand other languages, grasping most of the human language within a day of arriving on Earth. He initially spoke rather vaguely and in the third person, but by the end of the film, he was able to speak a full sentence about his new family.
- Climbing skills: Stitch is capable of sticking to wall surfaces and is able to climb very easily.
Biography[]
Brought before the Federation tribunal led by the Grand Councilwoman, Experiment 626 quickly earns the public's disgust due to his vicious nature. The testimony of his creator, Jumba Jookiba, regarding 626's destructive abilities only heightens the citizens' fear within the United Galactic Federation. However, the Grand Councilwoman realizes that 626 did not choose to be created and offers him a chance to speak to demonstrate that there is a trace of goodness within him. Pretending to be sensitive, 626 audaciously utters "Meega Nala Kweesta" aloud, shocking both the audience and the jury members. Infuriated by the creature's insolence and cruelty, the Grand Councilwoman sentences 626 to exile. He is immediately taken into custody, fitted with a security collar, and monitored by a turret linked to his DNA. 626 skillfully evades security, escapes, and steals a red patrol ship. When pursued by patrol ships, he activates the hyperdrive and vanishes into hyperspace.
Upon emerging from hyperspace, 626 relaxes until he is disturbed by a continuous engine control alert, which causes the instrument panel to crash land on Earth, specifically on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. After extricating himself from the wreckage of his ship, the blue creature explores his new surroundings just before his collar begins to electrocute him. He cleverly uses wiring from an electrical panel in a nearby residence to destroy the collar. Drawn by the scent of cake from a wedding taking place at the residence, 626 steals the maintenance man's cart and bursts into the festivities. The guests panic and attempt to grab him, but the blue creature drives them into a frenzy while snatching a piece of the wedding cake. Just as he finishes consuming his prize, he is accidentally run over by a bus.
The following day, 626 wakes up in the Animal Shelter kennel. Quickly becoming bored with the dogs' lack of intelligence, he escapes from his cage. Outside, he encounters a piece of cake, which turns out to be a trap set by Jumba and Pleakley, who attempt to eliminate the experiment with tranquilizer darts. Forced to return to the kennel, 626 observes a little girl named Lilo and hears Pleakley say that humans should not be harmed. Inspired by a canine adoption poster, the creature devises a plan to be adopted by the young human to find peace. Retracting his extra arms, spines, and antennae to resemble a dog, 626 approaches Lilo, who immediately becomes very fond of him, lifting him into her arms and receiving a hug from him. Despite Tūtū's hesitations and the shelter employee's concerns, Lilo leaves with 626.
Lilo's older sister, Nani, is not pleased with the blue creature's sudden appearance but agrees to let Lilo keep him for the day, warning her that she is responsible for him. Later, after stealing an electric car from one of Lilo's Hula friends, 626 discovers to his dismay that he is stranded on an island without any major city to destroy. Lilo then takes him to the beach, where 626 struggles to enjoy himself until Lilo uncovers his penchant for mischief, leading them to find ways to have fun together. While riding in the car with Nani, Lilo names the strange creature "Stitch."
At Jimmy's Luau, where Nani works, Stitch and Lilo engage in childish mischief until Stitch accidentally ignites a fire while imitating the fire-eating show, resulting in Nani's dismissal. At the Pelakai house, Stitch's wild and chaotic behavior pushes Nani to her limits. Desperate not to be separated from Stitch, Lilo attempts to teach him kindness, only for the creature to destroy her room before being calmed by a flower necklace. She then explains the importance of family, something Stitch admits he lacks. Once Stitch calms down, Lilo expresses her gratitude for finding him and kisses his nose.
While Nani searches for a new job, Lilo tries to teach Stitch manners to assist her sister, but the resulting antics and messes hinder Nani's job interviews. After Nani finally secures a position as a surfing instructor, Stitch becomes fascinated with the sport. Pleading with Lilo, he ends up surfing with the sisters and has a fantastic time. Unfortunately, Jumba and Pleakley attack on a jet ski, and although Stitch manages to chase them away, the trio falls into the water. Unable to float, Stitch clings tightly to Lilo, but in his panic, he nearly drowns her. Luckily, Nani and David rescue them.
At the hospital, Stitch feels relieved to learn that Lilo is okay. He then overhears a conversation between Nani and the social worker, becoming saddened by the realization that the sisters may no longer be able to stay together. That evening at home, Stitch begins to feel guilty when Nani states that everything has worsened since his arrival. Witnessing the two sisters share a tender moment under the stars, which may be their last, leads Stitch to finally comprehend the harm he has caused, prompting him to wander off into the forest, feeling sad and miserable. Overwhelmed by the feeling of not belonging anywhere, he returns to the same cage from which he escaped at the kennel.
The next day, while searching for Stitch, Lilo finds him. Still feeling down, Stitch confesses to being bad, but Lilo reassures him that he is not bad despite his flaws, emphasizing that even in Ohana, family is not perfect, then comforts him with a gentle hug. Jumba suddenly bursts through a portal to capture Stitch, but the blue creature seizes the portal gun and traps Jumba in a double portal, allowing them to escape and return home, only to find no one there.
Jumba subsequently storms the house, causing significant damage while Lilo and Stitch make their escape. Lilo eventually returns when Jumba threatens to destroy the bedroom of her deceased parents, prompting Stitch to attack once more. The two friends manage to overpower Jumba, only for the evil genius to manipulate Stitch's newfound kindness against him, highlighting the destruction he is causing and how he has used Lilo since their first encounter. Overcome with guilt from his creator's words, Stitch surrenders, not wanting to inflict any more harm on Lilo.
Aboard his spaceship, Jumba imprisons Stitch and plans to modify him into Experiment 627, now viewing him as a failed experiment due to his unexpected capacity to experience love, which would make his creator unstoppable. Stealthily sneaking aboard, Lilo opens Stitch's containment. During the ensuing struggle, the duo ejects Jumba into the ocean, but the controls are damaged in the process, and the instability caused by the opening airlock leads the ship to crash into the water.
Floating on a piece of the hull, Stitch spots Lilo trapped underwater by wreckage. He dives to rescue her and frees her, but the molecular density of the wreckage makes it too heavy for Lilo to lift to the surface. Despite Lilo's courageous efforts, Stitch refuses to let his best friend drown with him, so he makes her let go out of love for her. Nani and David then arrive to rescue Lilo, leaving Stitch at the bottom of the sea, happy that she is safe and accepting his fate as he begins to drown. At Lilo's pleading, Nani returns to save Stitch and, with great determination, brings the unconscious creature back to the beach. When the defibrillator fails to revive him, Lilo suggests using a car battery to boost the power. The initial attempt appears to fail, and Lilo breaks down in tears, but Stitch ultimately revives, much to everyone's joy.
Then, the Grand Councilwoman arrives to arrest Stitch herself. She is surprised to see how much Stitch has changed since their last encounter and that he now considers Nani and Lilo to be his family. Convinced that there is goodness in the blue creature, the Grand Councilwoman allows Stitch to remain on Earth.
Later, Stitch assists in rebuilding the house and witnesses Nani's departure for the University of California, San Diego, to pursue her studies in marine biology, while Lilo is placed in Tūtū's care. That evening, Lilo and Stitch communicate with Nani via video conference until Nani joins them using a portal gun, delighted to see Stitch. The three manage to avoid detection by hiding in bed together before falling asleep. Cuddled up with Nani and Lilo, Stitch lovingly refers to them as his sisters.
Trivia[]
- Unlike the original film, Stitch crash-lands on Earth after wrecking his own ship rather than crash-landing after exiting hyperspace following his battle with Federation forces.
- Stitch only has his full form at the beginning of the film, and doesn't take it again once he is adopted by Lilo, although he uses one of his extra arms again briefly at the end of the film.
- Unlike his original counterpart, the notch on Stitch's left ear is more atrophied compared to his right one, making it harder to distinguish.
- The way Stitch leaves the Pelekay family combines several elements from the original film and Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch.
- In the original Lilo and Stitch, Stitch was looking for his family after he came to believe he didn't belong with Lilo and Nani.
- In Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, Stitch left because he considered himself too dangerous due to his breakdowns resulting from his incompletely charged molecular structure, but Stitch did not know this and believed it was his nature, causing him to attempt to leave Earth.
- In the remake, Stitch left because he felt guilty for putting Lilo's life in danger, for contributing to further breaking up the Pelekai family and because he finally realized the consequences of his own selfishness. He didn't search for his family like in the original film and didn't try to leave Earth like in the sequel, simply returning to his cage at the kennel. A defining moment missing from the original franchise is Lilo's success in making Stitch realize that his flaws and mistakes didn't make him bad and that he belonged in Lilo's Ohana because no one in any family is perfect.
