Stiyl Magnus is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
He is a member of the Anglican Church and its 0th Parish, Necessarius. He is the partner of Kaori Kanzaki and an old friend of Index though due to having her memories every year until Touma Kamijou saved her, she barely remembers him.
He is voiced by Kissho Taniyama in the Japanese version of the anime and Robert McCollum in the English version, the former of whom also voices Jean Kirschtein and Kittan Bachika.
Appearance[]
Despite being 14 years old (younger than both Touma and Index), Stiyl is a very tall young man, standing roughly 6'7" feet. He has shoulder-length blonde hair which is dyed red and also has red eyes. He wears a large black priest robe with silver rings on all ten of his fingers. He's covered in jewelry on his ears and has a barcode tattoo underneath his right eye. Stiyl is always seen with a cigarette in his mouth and is a heavy smoker in general.
Personality[]
Stiyl is a gruff and austere person with a short temper. It doesn't take much to anger him and he tends to retaliate in violent ways. He carries himself in a serious manner and has a no-nonsense attitude. However, he deeply cares about Index and desires to protect her from harm. It's heavily implied that he has feelings for Index and he tends to get embarrassed whenever someone points this out. His greatest regret is being unable to save Index without her loosing her memories and even allows Index to live her life despite disobeying the orders of the church but is still loyal to it and currently remains a member. Aside from this, Stiyl is capable of being kind to others and often means well, as he was willing to protect Patricia Birdway from Richard Brave's machinations and looks after his comrades.
Despite his serious behavior, Stiyl can be rather childish and petty at times. He holds some resentment and jealousy towards Touma because of his closeness with Index and has a sort of rivalry with him. He enjoys causing Touma discomfort whenever they work together and will even put him in harms way. However, Stiyl respects Touma because of his abilities and how Index is happy whenever she's with him. He even states that the only reason why he tolerates Touma is because Index loves him.
Stiyl is also a heavy smoker and he's always seen with a cigarette in his mouth. He hates Academy City because of how it's extremely difficult to find a cigarette being a minor and believes that a world without nicotine would be hell for him due to his addiction.
