I thought of you while away. Of when my sister faced her darkness and emerged stronger. A survivor. A phoenix. All this change? It's all the same. Let us do what we do. Believe not in a dream or our gifts, but in each other.
~ Storm to Jean Grey

Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, is one of the main protagonists of 1992-97 animated superhero series X-Men: The Animated Series and its 2024 sequel series X-Men '97, as well as a guest character in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. She is one of the older students, who is known for being compassionate, wise, strong-willed and dignified. Her experience and potent weather-based powers come in handy when dealing with dangerous villains.

She is initially voiced by Iona Morris during the first season and the first seven episodes of the second season before she was replaced by Alison Sealy-Smith for the remainder of the original series and X-Men '97.

History[]

X-Men: The Animated Series[]

Ororo Munroe was born in Africa in a small village near Mount Kilimanjaro. She developed her powers early and used them to help her village. Although she has no children of her own she helped another woman give birth to her son. However, the child died so Ororo breathed life into him and the child lived. The child was named Mj'Nari and the two thought of each other as family.

As a child Ororo was almost buried alive. This caused her to develop claustrophobia, which would continue to affect her throughout her life.

She encountered a man calling himself the Shadow King. Professor Charles Xavier had to come and save her. Ororo then joined Xavier's X-Men along with Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Morph, Gambit, and Rogue. She took on the codename Storm. She was third in command under Xavier and Cyclops. Wolverine arrived later and Storm noted how many on the team felt he could not stay there but did anyway.

One day Ororo, Rogue, and Remy went to the New Salem Mall to do some shopping. Remy went off while Ororo and Rogue were on their own. While there Jubilee bumped into Rogue. She ran off but encountered a Sentinel. The three X-Men then used their powers to attack the robot without success. Jubilee ran outside where it was attacked by Cyclops. Jubilee was knocked out and the four brought her to the Xavier Mansion for help.

After Jubilee woke up and found herself in the Danger Room Storm took her aside and explained to her the nature of being a mutant, what the X-Men are, and who she is.

Xavier hacked the Sentinel's head and realized that the X-Men needed to attack the Mutant Control Agency headquarters in Washington D.C. to prevent future attacks on mutants. Storm, Wolverine, Beast, and Morph entered the facility to destroy the files. After Wolverine noticed that men with guns were waiting for them Storm used her powers to blow the guards away. When they needed to leave quickly Storm used her powers to destroy the files with water and the team left.

On their way back to the Blackbird they were attacked by Sentinels. The X-Men made a valiant stand but were unable to stop the robots. Morph sacrificed himself to save Wolverine and is seemingly killed. The team returned to the mansion after knocking out Wolverine.

The team tracked a Sentinel to its place of origin at US Motors in Detroit, Michigan where Jubilee was being held. The group attacked the Sentinels and destroyed the factory.

When Sabretooth was knocked out Cyclops brought him to the mansion. Logan attempted to take him out but Xavier stopped him. Storm reminded Logan about his early days and how Sabretooth reminds them of him.

Magneto arose after several years of inactivity and attacked a missile base in the name of mutant liberation. Storm, Cyclops, and Wolverine attacked the powerful mutant in an attempt to stop them. Magneto made an offer for them to join him but the X-Men declined. The master of magnetism then proved too powerful for the team. Magneto activated the launch sequence and sent some missiles flying. They tried to stop the missiles but were unable to find the override button.

Storm then flew after them intending to destroy them using her powers. She used the wind to divert the missiles over the water and lightning to short circuit the warheads so that they disarmed and sink below the water. She exhausted herself and fell, only to be caught by Wolverine. With the mission accomplished the X-Men left. Magneto watched and wondered why Xavier would help those who persecute them.

Xavier explained to the team about his attempts to help Sabretooth. Wolverine storms out not wanting to be in the same place as his old enemy. They found out that Magneto was attacking Metro Chemical so the entire team, minus Jubilee, went off after him.

The team tried but were stopped by Magneto. Storm was buried under some rubble triggering her claustrophobia and knocked unconscious. She was uncovered by Rogue and, after Xavier beat Magneto, carried out of the burning facility.

The X-Men returned to the mansion to find Wolverine and Sabretooth fighting. Xavier scolded Wolverine until they found out that Sabretooth tricked the X-Men to gain access to the mansion.

Storm fought a battle with Callisto and gained the Scepter of Power along with the leadership of the Morlocks. She made Callisto the temporary leader while she was away.

Ororo was present for the wedding of Jean Grey and Scott. Ororo, Rogue, and Jubilee were all trying to catch the bouquet but it ended up with Beast.

After the wedding Xavier left to go help Magneto in Antarctica. While Scott and Jean were on their honeymoon Storm was in charge. However, the Friends of Humanity were engaged in anti-mutant riots and Storm knew they needed to be stopped. Wolverine wanted to simply attack them but Storm did not want to add to their anger.

It was around this time that Storm was in the mall when Jubilee was being harassed by an angry mob led by an undercover Friends of Humanity member who had infected the store clerk she was talking to with a homemade plague to rally anti-mutant hatred against her. Storm helped to ensure Jubilee escaped unharmed. Later, Bishop arrived from his own time period to aid the X-Men again against another incident that messed up his time that occurred during their time. They soon discover that Graydon Creed and the Friends of Humanity had been unknowing pawns of a greater plot by the genocidal Apocalypse. Unfortunately, when they destroy the lab cultivating the plague, Apocalypse becomes so infuriated that he vaporizes Storm and the rest of the X-Men in retaliation. This is prevented when Cable arrives from his own time period to help and intentionally has Wolverine infected with the plague, resulting in his mutant powers creating antibodies to counteract it. Cable and Bishop then destroy the lab, and prevented from retaliating by a forcefield that Cable deployed, Apocalypse is forced to retreat in defeat, saving Storm and everyone else from their grim fate.

While all this was happening, Rogue also found herself dealing with the awoken mind of Ms. Marvel, whom she had permanently absorbed the powers of while working under Mystique and the Brotherhood of Mutants before joining the X-Men. Storm pursued her until she was knocked out with sleeping gas by Mystique, who then used Storm's communicator to lure Gambit, Wolverine, and Cyclops into her trap, but Storm later recovered and dealt with the Brotherhood herself before pursuing Rogue again when she escaped with Mystique while still trying to fight off Ms. Marvel in a mental battle until she was aided by Jean with Cerebro. After Rogue disowned Mystique, she returned home with Storm.

Storm later returned to Africa to deal with the return of the Shadow King when he possessed Mj'Nari and was able to seal him away again.

Later, when they head to Antarctica to help Professor X and Magneto, they find that Mister Sinister had lured them into a trap, as he was using a device that neutralized mutant powers, including the X-Men, allowing him to easily capture them, and learn that Morph survived his apparent death by the Sentinels, and was under Mister Sinister's control. However, after the device prohibiting their powers was destroyed, Morph freed himself from Sinister's control and influence and helped to destroy him, if only temporarily.

It is then later that Storm discovers that Jean has become the host for the Phoenix Force, sworn to protect the M'Krann Crystal from evil, such as the dreaded Shi'Ar Emperor D'Ken, especially when Professor X is visited by D'Ken's sister Lilandra, who asks for his help to protect the crystal. Storm aids in helping Lilandra, but in the end, to protect everyone, Jean takes the M'Krann Crystal and places it in the Sun to ensure it can never be corrupted again before leaving for the time being to maintain the Phoenix's duty to protect the cosmos.

When Jean returns later, the Phoenix Force is still within her and refuses to leave. This is used by the Inner Circle to try and turn Jean over to their side. Storm is captured alongside Gambit, Cyclops, Beast, and Rogue, but Jean's love for Cyclops and Wolverine prevents the Phoenix from trying to kill them, and leads to the Phoenix, and Jean, becoming the feared Dark Phoenix, breaking free of the Inner Circle's control, freeing Storm and the others, and while Storm scares off most of the members with her powers, Dark Phoenix overpowers her, but Jean prevents it from killing Storm and the others, and flees the planet. When she returns later, she is still too powerful, but Professor X manages to get Jean's help to subdue the Phoenix Force for the moment. However, Lilandra arrives and declares Jean must die for the good of the universe now that she's the Dark Phoenix. Xavier calls on an ancient Shi'Ar trial of combat to decide Jean's fate. Despite Storm and the other X-Men's efforts, the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard is too powerful, and when Cyclops goes down, Jean unleashes Dark Phoenix again, but Xavier revives the X-Men to stop her. Weakened, Jean forces Lilandra to blast her, killing her, and ending the threat of the Dark Phoenix. Restored to its original benevolent state as the celestial guardian, the Phoenix Force, once Storm and everyone else agree to it, takes a little of each of their life forces to revive Jean from death. Once finished, the Phoenix Force returns Storm and the X-Men safely home to the X-Mansion.

It is much later that Storm and the other X-Men face Apocalypse in his greatest plan yet to erase time and recreate it in his image. Storm is assigned to protect Psylocke, but a joint effort by Magneto, Mystique, and Sabertooth, allows them to capture her. Joined by Cable and the time machine Greymalkin that he commandeered from his time period, Storm and the rest of the X-Men travel to the past to destroy Apocalypse's Lazarus Chamber that granted him his immortality by giving him eternal life through it, but fall into Apocalypse's trap, as Mystique is waiting for them, and on her signal, Apocalypse stuns the X-Men and makes off with Professor X and Wolverine to complete his plan. However, thanks to Bishop's intervention, Apocalypse is stopped, and when Xavier and the other psychics force him back into the time stream, with his Lazarus Chamber destroyed, he essentially ceases to exist, ending his threat.

Nevertheless, the original man who led the Sentinel program, Henry Peter Gyrich, gets one last attack on Xavier that forces him to have to seek medical attention from Lilandra if he has any hope of survival, and leaves Storm and the other X-Men behind, wishing them, and his old friend/enemy Magneto, the best before he departs with Lilandra for treatment on the Shi'Ar homeworld.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series[]

In the season two two-part crossover, "Mutant Agenda" and "Mutants' Revenge", Storm and the rest of the X-Men are confronted by Spider-Man when he attempts to seek out Professor X for help with his mutation caused by the spider bite the originally gave him his powers. Later, when they learn of the attack in Manhattan by a mutated Herbert Landon, Storm joins the rest of the X-Men in helping Spidey stop Landon's rampage, using her powers alongside Jubilee and Gambit to keep Landon immobile long enough to get a cable from the Blackbird wrapped around him and lift him into the air to siphon all the electricity he absorbed out of him to regress him back to a half-human, half-mutant state. Afterwards, the X-Men assure Spidey that he can always call on them if he ever needs help, having become friends thanks to recent events.

In the three-part "Secret Wars" arc, Storm is the only member of the team called upon by Spidey to prove to the Beyonder of good being able to triumph over evil as she, alongside Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, and Black Cat, help Spidey combat the forces of Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, the Red Skull, and Alistair Smythe, after managing to get Doctor Curt Connors in control of his mutated form of The Lizard to aid them. Their efforts prove successful, and the Beyonder sends them home with no memory of what transpired, though before he does, Storm reassures Spidey of one thing they all have in common: They're heroes, no matter what.

X-Men '97[]

In the months that followed, the X-Men found new acceptance from the world and a sanction from the United Nations, as tensions between mutants and humans de-escalated. The team was joined by Bishop, who had been stranded in the past, and continued their fight for human and mutant co-existence.

The team was soon thrown into disarray when the last will of Xavier revealed that he had left the mansion and the team to Magneto. Magneto assumed leadership of the X-Men, resisting their demands that he prove himself, and instead demanding their loyalty. When the U.N. learned of his location, they sent a taskforce to arrest him. Magneto agreed to come peacefully in order to stand trial for his crimes.

When the Friends of Humanity invaded the trial, the X-Men tried to deal with them, with Storm sticking close to Magneto. The Friends of Humanity had stormed the trial; in order to give their leader, the X-Cutioner, the opportunity to fire a rifle that would de-power Magneto. Storm threw herself in front of Magneto and lost her powers as a result.

With Beast's tests revealing that the effects were irreversible, a shell-shocked Storm decided to leave the team. While traveling the country, she eventually made her way to Texas, where she encountered Forge, a mutant inventor who claimed he could restore her powers.

The pair grew closer as Forge worked on ways to reverse the loss of her powers. His first attempt was unsuccessful, and guilty over not having told her the truth of why he had sought her out, he confessed that he had worked for the U.S. government and given them designs that had eventually been used to construct the X-Cutioner's weapon. Storm grew angry, and even after Forge told her that he loved her, she angrily rejected him for lying to her.

While Storm attempted to leave, she found herself teleported back to Forge's home, as the two came under attack from the Adversary.

At the ranch, Forge used his mother's spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helped him search for a rare cactus which can cure the poison. Storm found the cactus in a cave, but was cornered by the Adversary once again. Overcoming her fears, Storm regained her powers with her new outfit and defeated the Adversary. Storm healed Forge, and then they learned about the attack on Genosha.

Powers & Abilities[]

Storm is a mutant with the ability to control and manipulate the forces of nature. The nature of her powers grant her control over wind, rain, lightning, hurricanes, ice and heat.

Her precise control over the forces of nature enables her to achieve a wide variety of weather such as making whirlwinds travel pointing lengthwise in any direction, flash freezing objects and people, and summoning wind currents strong enough to support her weight and make her herself and others fly and hover.

Personality[]

Storm is a responsible person who is an effective leader of the X-Men. She is always seeking the best way through any situation. She is often witty, when simply talking to her fellow X-Men and does seem to have a good sense of humor. She has a great deal of self-control, as her powers are controlled by her emotions, so if she was to feel anger to a great extent, she would often be the cause unbelievable damage and become a danger to her friends.

She suffers from claustrophobia. This stems from a bad experience she had as a child where she was almost buried alive. When she is in confined spaces she freaks out and her powers get out of control.
