Why must you take that cursed form? It is indeed strong and can protect you... but if you rely on it too often... what you will sacrifice can never be reclaimed.
~ Stranger, to Sunny about Omori.

Stranger is a major character in the 2020 phycological horror game Omori. It is a dark figure that tries to help Sunny reach the truth of his past and break free from the dreams that block the event, that being Mari's death, out of Sunny's mind. It serves as a major character in the true route, and the secondary antagonist of the alternate route.

Appearance[]

The Stranger resembles Sunny's best friend, Basil, having the same hairstyle and body type. However, it is pitch black, similar to a shadow with white, glowing eyes. During its boss fight, the Stranger also appears alongside what looks like a form of Basil's Something.

Biography[]

Past[]

Before the events of Omori, Sunny would accidentally murder his sister, Mari, by pushing her down the stairs. His best friend, Basil, would try to cover up this murder as a suicide, leading to both of them gaining their own forms of guilt from it. Sunny would begin to repress the memory of his sister's death.

Although it isn't known how the Stranger manifested itself into Sunny's mind, it was likely due to Sunny's repression of the truth and his refusal to acknowledge what had happened that day.

Omori[]

At various points in the game, the Stranger will show up briefly, before walking off-screen. If Omori and friends follow it, they are taken to one of the next areas of the game's story, which can show that the Stranger wants to help them on their journey. Whether this behavior is linked to helping in revealing the truth is unknown.

When Omori reaches Black Space and the twisted realm beyond it, Stranger is found in almost every area, mostly near one of the keys Omori needs to progress through Black Space. Each time it is found, It will tell Omori cryptic things, as well as things seemingly from the perspective of the real Basil, before disappearing. When Omori reaches a black-and-white church in this twisted land, two possible outcomes come about depending on Sunny's decisions throughout his final three days before moving away.

True Ending[]

If Sunny had been spending his final days with his friends, Stranger will tell him that the truth is finally upon them, and that they can face it together, before seemingly walking into the shadowy tendrils keeping the Headspace version of Basil bound. This leads to Omori killing the Headspace Basil, and Omori turning on Sunny.

After the final battle against Omori, Sunny will awaken in a hospital, due to events that transpired the previous night. When he exits the room, he will find a split path, one is walked by the Headspace versions of Aubrey, Kel and Hero that leads to the balcony of the hospital. The other path, however, shows the Stranger, leading Sunny to Basil's hospital room. The Stranger then fades away, with Sunny finally telling his friends the truth about what had happened to Mari.

Alternate Route[]

If Sunny continues to shut himself away from his friends (by returning to sleep instead of opening the door for Kel on no later than Two Days Left), the encounter at the church will go much differently. Instead of reminding Sunny that he shall remember the truth soon, Stranger will instead chastise him for further suppressing the truth. A dark monster suddenly appears and charges at Omori. When it catches him, Sunny will awaken in a dark room with Stranger awaiting him inside a smaller version of the previous monster. Stranger tells him that he must face it if he won't face the truth, and reveals throughout the battle that it plans to keep Sunny in the dark area they are in forever, possibly as punishment for refusing to confront the truth.

Eventually, Sunny succumbs to the greater force of Stranger, and is taken to a long corridor-like area. After slowly being overwhelmed by all the things that have been gnawing away at him for the four years before the game, Sunny eventually finds Omori. Omori seemingly wants to help Sunny and appears in the dark room Stranger nearly killed Sunny in moments ago. Stranger seems to have finally realized it will never steer Sunny down the right path, and tells Sunny to go on without it. After this, Omori finally manages to save Basil, take complete control of Sunny's mind and body, and discover how loose ends in Headspace get tied up with his friends. All the while, Stranger continues to rot within the dark room.
