~ Sunny |
Sunny, also known as Sanzō, is the main protagonist of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is the former Regent to Baron Quinn, the most ruthless and savage Baron in the Badlands. Trained from his childhood to be a remorseless killer, Sunny became the most feared warrior alive. However, after his wife becomes pregnant and he takes a young boy named M.K. under his wing, Sunny becomes desperate to escape the Badlands and start a new life where he and his allies will be safe from those who would see them killed.
He was portrayed by Daniel Wu.
Appearance[]

Sunny's Clipper tattoos.
Sunny is a middle-aged man who goes through multiple outfits throughout the series, starting with the standard Clipper uniform of those who serve under Baron Quinn. The most distinguished part of his appearance are his 404 black line tattoos on his back symbolic of every kill he executed on Quinn's orders.
After becoming a member of the Bordeaux Mines, he wore a standard Picker outfit. Later he briefly served as Chau's Regent and thus had a while Clipper uniform standard of those who serve her. After abandoning being a killer altogether, Sunny wore different outfits interchangeably, primarily those with large and baggy clothing to serve as a form of armor or to help him carry his infant son Henry.
Personality[]
As a child, Sunny was trained to become a remorseless killer for Quinn. At one point, he genuinely enjoyed killing, even if it is was innocent people such as M.K.'s mother. However, years of blindly murdering countless people took a toll on Sunny, and by the start of the series he has become quiet and reserved. He is willing to do terrible things for Quinn, but he does show reservation over more extreme actions, and isn't willing to kill anyone who is within their borders, as he believes that his actions were for the sake of protecting the people in the Armadillo Territory. He is also the only member of Quinn's Clipper force that disagree or even outright disagree with him in certain cases without being killed due to the level of trust between them.
Sunny changes as a person after falling in love with Veil, despite the rules that Clippers are not supposed to have families. Once he learns she is pregnant with his child, something he always wanted but never thought he would have a chance for, he abandons his life as a Clipper and attempts to get himself and his family out of the Badlands. After Veil's death, he takes his newborn son Henry away from the warring Barons and protects him, now completely adverse to violence. While he is still cold and standoffish at times, he does open up more to having allies, such as becoming close friends with Bajie. In the end, he sacrifices himself to stop Pilgrim and make sure both his son Henry and the world as a whole is safe.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Sunny's skill in combat is unrivaled by anyone who does not possess the Gift. The only individuals who can successfully match him combat are Baron Quinn, the Widow, and Pilgrim, and even then they are not able to completely overpower him if he is not already at an advantage such as being injured. Kannin claims that the reason for his superior fighting skill is due to his Gift being dormant inside of him.
- Pain Tolerance: Sunny showed a very high pain tolerance in battle, still continuing to fight to the very end even when he is facing Dark Ones. It often takes multiple opponents to knock him out, and only dies after being disemboweled by Pilgrim during the final battle for the Badlands.
- The Gift: Sunny possesses the most powerful Gift in the series, but it was locked inside of him by his sister Kannin when they were children. The capabilities of his Gift were shown in his final moments, as the Master claimed that with enough time it could resurrect him from death.
- Seeing Beyond: After being put in a coma by Cyan, Sunny has a dream of his wife and son in an alternate world where they lived happily on a farm. Sunny is somehow aware that his son has been named Henry despite having no way of knowing this knowledge. Considering the Master was capable of searching the world with her Gift, it's likely Sunny also possessed this ability to some level.
