Supergirl: Krypton was a beautiful place. We honor people of hope, not war...Zod may be Kryptonian, but he is not my people.
The Flash: So you're saying...
Supergirl: Yes, I will help you fight Zod.
~ Kara Zor-El and Barry Allen.
We came to this planet looking for a safe place to live, and they put me in a cage.
~ Supergirl to Barry Allen.

Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, is a major character of the 2023 DC Extended Universe film The Flash.

She from an alternate 2013, who was sent to Earth to protect her cousin Kal-El. However, their pods accidentally caused her to be apprehended by some Russians in Siberia, before being saved by the Justice League in an attempt to find Superman to stop General Zod, which she agreed to after they saved her regardless of not being the hero they thought. Despite working with the Flashpoint Justice League to stop Zod, she was ultimately killed in the battle.

She was portrayed by Sasha Calle.

History[]

When Krypton was destroyed, Kara was sent in a separate pod to Kal-El in order to protect him. Her pod was found by a Siberian research facility who proceeded to lock her in a chamber in order to weaken her powers.

DC Extended Universe[]

The Flash[]

Batman, along with the Flashes from Earths 1 and 89, break Kara out of her chamber in Siberia, while believing that they would find Kal-El in there. After recovering, she helps them to defeat the soldiers surrounding them in the exterior of the facility before passing out. They bring her to Wayne Mansion where they inform her of the situation of General Zod's plan to destroy Earth which she initially refuses due to it not being her planet and her belief that most humans are evil. She helps Earth 1 Barry to get his powers back by flying him into the storm to get him struck by lightning and upon realising that humans can be kind, changes her mind and decides to help them take down Zod. Before fighting him, he informs her that he killed Kal-El while he was an infant while trying to obtain Codex to repopulate Kryptonians. Zod then states that the last remaining Codex is contained within Kara and they fight each other. Eventually Kara is killed by him leading to both Flashes travelling back in time to save her and Batman. She is then killed again by Zod leading to Earth 89 Flash continuously attempting to save her and Batman but failing. Earth 1 Flash however, quickly figures out that there is no possible future where both of them are saved, along with the universe and ultimately gives up.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Kryptonian Physiology: As a Kryptonian, under the Red Sun, Kara is no more different than a normal human being, except that once exposed to the Yellow Sun, a young star with a richer atmosphere than Krypton's, Kara takes on a much more advanced and powerful physiognomy than a normal human being, Kara's physiognomy is far more advanced and powerful than that of a normal human being, and improves and strengthens the longer she is exposed to the Yellow Sun's rays. Supergirl doesn't need food or drink, she can feed herself without any problem, she doesn't need any sleep either, she can go as long as she likes without sleeping, although she's always able to; her metabolism is also capable of keeping her perfectly clean and smelling good at all times.
    • Superhuman Durability: When Kara is under the Yellow Sun, she is completely immune to physical injury and trauma, and cannot be harmed by conventional weapons, even by beings as strong as her. She is also immune to heat, fire, electricity, and all kinds of gases. Her skin is bulletproof and fireproof, and her musculoskeletal structure is totally indestructible under the weight of the weights she carries. Kara is virtually indestructible, able to withstand impacts with large objects at hypersonic speeds, huge hydrogen explosions never recorded before and volcanic eruptions of theoretical energy value. It tolerates sub-zero, near-kelvin temperatures, and withstands certain cosmological/energetic events (solar storms, large-scale asteroid fallout). She can even survive a planetary collision. Kara is able to survive and adapt to extremely high or low atmospheric pressure (without becoming disoriented or deprived of her normal breathing capacity), as well as high wind friction; Kara is immune to the many effects of rapid acceleration, including air resistance, inability to breathe, dynamic shock resulting from contact with high-speed objects, etc. Having broken the sound barrier on several occasions, she has flown into battle with ease. Kara has no need for oxygen, allowing her to survive indefinitely in airless environments. Because of this, she can simulate powers such as Atmospheric Adaptation, Aquatic Breathing and Vacuum Adaptation. She simply does not need to breathe.
    • Superhuman Strength: Thanks to the Yellow Solar Rays, Kara is able to generate an almost infinite force equal to that of a thermonuclear bomb, able to move mountains, tectonic plates, continents, and lift essentially infinite charges, easily defeating any adversary. And as she remains exposed to the yellow solar rays, Kara's strength increases and grows stronger, becoming even stronger over time.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Kara never appears to grow tired, she can fight one battle after another without ever faltering or taking a break, remaining flying indefinitely and breathing easily underwater, her body producing no fatigue toxins during long physical exertions.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Kara is resistant/immune to the effects of physical, mental and spiritual overwork, be it bodily tension, stress, pain or simply fatigue. This enables her to push her body, exceed her limits and go further in her abilities without suffering the consequences, pushing herself physically, mentally, using her power, etc. in ways she's not supposed to without injury or fatigue.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: When Kara is injured, she is able to quickly heal all her wounds with the help of the Yellow Sun. This also makes her immune, or at least highly resistant, to diseases and other poisons/toxins with which she could be infected.
    • Longevity: Since her cells are constantly renewed and sustained by the Yellow Sun, Kara is essentially semi-immortal, not suffering the onset of aging, such as wrinkles, diseases, or syndromes like Alzheimer's, and always looking as young and pretty as ever. At least as long as she stays within range of the Yellow Sun and far away from a Red Sun, otherwise her body will age normally.
    • Superhuman Speed: Kara has the ability to move far beyond what is naturally possible for the vast majority of beings in her universe. Due to the wide range of speed levels in this category, the speed Kara can achieve varies between sonic, supersonic, and hypersonic. The minimum possible speed is 617 to 6174 km/h, which is approximately: "Mach 5.2"
    • Flight: Kara can propel herself at very high speeds, easily breaking the sound barrier and outrunning airplanes and most flying kryptonian aircrafts. She can easily reach supersonic speeds, thanks to the Yellow Sun, which allows her to manipulate her own gravity, enabling her to levitate or fly.
    • Superhuman Senses: Kara's senses of sight, taste, hearing, touch and smell are far more acute than those of other beings in her universe. She can see for thousands of kilometers with immense resolution and see/track things too fast for the natural eye, hear perfectly through dense walls and listen to the slightest vibrations/noise from extremely distant places, even in deep space, smell anything over great distances down to individual molecules/atoms, taste the tiniest details to the point of distinguishing them on a molecular level, and sense the slightest vibrations in the air, soil, and water.
    • Electromagnetic Vision: Kara can perceive the world around her based solely on magnetic and electrical energy patterns. She may even be able to see the natural magnetic auras that surround living beings. She can almost see the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and can "tune" her vision to interpret different energy ranges. She can see radio waves (including AM, FM, and TV frequencies), Radar, Infrared, Visible Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays, and Gamma Rays. She also has Night Vision and Thermoscopic Vision. Kara can also see the energy flowing through power lines and technological objects (she can determine whether they are active or not). She can determine whether a radio transmitter is on and sending signals.
    • Heat Vision: Kara can absorb and store ambient heat and solar rays, and redistribute them as destructive, lethal laser beams, hot enough to cut through anything and anyone, they can also be used to melt or set fire to anything, or fuse two metals together. Kara has total control over her Heat Vision and can choose how much she uses at a time, as well as the intensity of the heat, the direction, etc… Her laser beams have no distance limit and can extend to infinity.
    • Freezing Breath: Kara is able to convert the ambient heat she absorbs into a gel, similar to liquid nitrogen, capable of freezing anything in contact with it and rapidly bringing it to absolute zero. Kara is able to generate and manipulate ice and cold within her in such a way as to shape the exhalation of the effect. These forms can include flurries, jets, spheres, and even a fog rising from her mouth.

Abilities[]

  • Charisma: Despite her long period of imprisonment at the hands of the humans, Kara kept her Kryptonian Charisma, although she was deprived of yellow sun rays for a while, once she had bathed in sunlight, Kara was young and pretty again.
  • Indomitable Will: Kara is very determined and never gives up in the face of danger she can't overcome alone. She's no coward and will fight on, whether she wins or loses. Even after losing everything - her home, her family, her cousin, her planet - Kara doesn't give up and agrees to help The Flash stand up to General Zod.
    • Free Will: In addition to her indomitable will, Kara also possesses a free will, which enables her to possess free will, i.e. the ability of beings to make their own choices without being subject to external influences. This makes her impervious to fate, as she can forge her own destiny and defy prophecy.

Trivia[]

  • Supergirl in the DC Extended Universe is the fourth live-action adaptation of the character, after Helen Slater, Laura Vandervoort, and Melissa Benoist.
    • This version of the character is also a loose adaptation of Kal-El from the Flashpoint timeline, who was taken by the US government instead of the Kent family.
    • Her appearance is possibly modelled after Lara Lane-Kent, the daughter of Superman in the Injustice comics, and also notably similar to Cir-El/Mia Kent from the one-shot Superman: The 12 Cent Adventure.
  • The Cyrillic letters seen on Supergirl's prison outfit are spelled as "SAMYY OPASNYY" in the English alphabet, which is known to translate as "Most Dangerous".
  • Rachel Zegler and Bruna Marquezine originally auditioned to play Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in The Flash before Sasha Calle was cast. However, Zegler would go on to portray Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, while Marquezine would go on to portray Jenny Kord in Blue Beetle.
  • Originally, Supergirl was going to become the new universe's version Supergirl, seemingly replacing any version of Superman, after Barry reset the timeline prior to James Gunn's new DCU announcement. An alternate ending of the Flash was filmed in which Supergirl and Keaton's Batman are alive after Barry resets the timeline, and she visits Barry and Batman at the courthouse to discuss the idea of forming a new version of the Justice League.[1]
  • That Kara when arrived on Earth, she specifically landed on Russia being as a prisoner, it could be a reference to "Superman: Red Son", which said comic was an Elseworld, which Kal-El landed on Russia instead of Smallville.
  • While every version of Kara Zor-El has long blonde hair, or when Powergirl, a blonde messy bob cut, this film's version has black hair in a style very similar to the film's Flash.
