~ Superion's motto |
Superion (スペリオン) is the first Autobot combiner & the combined form of the Autobot aircraft team Aerialbots. He is a recurring hero in the Transformers franchise. He is created to counter the Decepticons' Stunticons & their combined form Menasor, his archenemy, as well as the Decepticons' air supremacy.
Superion's most common configuration:
- Silverbolt (main body)
- Fireflight (right arm)
- Slingshot (left arm)
- Skydive (right leg)
- Air Raid (left leg)
Official Toy Biography[]
"A fierce & frightful fighting machine. Suppresses though of the five Aerialbots that comprise him, directs his thinking to one purpose: destruction of Decepticons. Cold, aloof. Flies at 800mph, range 5800 miles. Can demolish a battleship with one blow. Uses electrostatic discharger rifle. Difficult for him to adapt to new situations or be innovative due to limited mental functions."
Generations 1[]
Superion was initally voiced by Frank Welker in his debut episode. After that, the now-late Ed Gilbert voiced Superion for the rest of the series.
First appearing in the second half of "The Key to Vector Sigma" after the creation of the Aerialbots on Cybertron, as well as receiving life from a reactivated Vector Sigma after Alpha Trion sacrificed himself, Optimus slyly alluded that six Autobots were born on that day. The Aerialbots then soon learned their leader's true meaning of leadership during their battle on Earth. He was first formed by the Aerialbots under Optimus' command after the Stunticons formed Menasor, much to Megatron's shock. At first, Superion had the upper hand in defeating Menasor before the tide turns as the latter overpowers him by aggression, via strucking him on a builing & getting trapped by a landslide. Superion was nearly owned, only to be saved by Omega Supreme, who then aided him defeating Menasor by ganging him up.
Comics[]
Superion was first glimpsed in the Marvel UK-exclusive story "Second Generation", when Buster Witwicky had a dream of Superion saving him from Shockwave and battling Menasor. Realising it was a vision of the future from Buster's contact with the Creation Matrix, Optimus Prime joined him in a second dream where they saw the Aerialbots forming Superion to battle Menasor and trick him into shooting Bruticus.
This led to Superion's first Marvel US appearance in Issue #21. The newly-created Aerialbots were despatched to deal with a Decepticon attempt to obtain the power of Hoover Dam. They formed Superion to destroy the Decepticons' energy-draining machine but, since most of the Aerialbots had yet to be programmed to protect human life, he came close to killing Ricky Vasquez, a human being controlled by one of Bombshell's cerebro shells, forcing Silverbolt to disengage the combination. In the following issue, the now fully programmed Aerialbots were sent out to stop the new Stunticons and formed Superion to battle Menasor. However, an attack by robot-hating vigilante Circuit Breaker injured Superion and allowed Menasor to triumph.
The UK annual story "The Return of the Transformers" saw Superion still struggling with his priorities as an Autobot, causing him to destroy an empty hotel in order to get to Starscream. A flashback in the later story "Perchance to Dream" dealt with the same period, when Superion went berserk during a battle with Menasor after Silverbolt's fear of flying leaked through the shared consciousness.
In the G.I. Joe and the Transformers miniseries, Superion confronted the G.I. Joe team after they destroyed Bumblebee in a misunderstanding but disengaged on hearing Optimus Prime had been killed. At the climax of the series, with the Autobots now allied with both G.I. Joe and Cobra, Superion was formed to battle Devastator during an attack on the Decepticon base and smashed him into his component parts.
Superion made his last Marvel US appearance in Issue #43, set in the future, where he investigated Quintesson activity but was damaged in an encounter with one of their ships and rescued by Sky Lynx.
He reappeared in Marvel UK's Earthforce storyline in "Inside Story", where he was infected by one of Bombshell's cerebro shells and went on the rampage. Grimlock, Prowl and Springer were prepared to fire on him to stop him destroying a human town but at the last minute, Irwin Spoon, a human journalist whose aide they had enlisted, removed the shell and restored Superion to normal.

Abilities & Weapons [1][]
Primary function: Air Warrior[]
Abilities[]
- Superion is a super robot utilizing combiner technology to merge the Aerialbots's bodies & minds.
- He has immense strength & endurance. One of his punches packs enough force to demolish a full-size battleship. He is quite skilled as a warrior with no fear.
- Unlike most combiners, Superion is very agile & can fly with at speeds of 800 mph (~ 1287 km/h or roughly Mach 1) for 5800 miles (~ 9334 km).
- His body is resistant to most Earth & Cybertronian artillery.
Arsenal: Superion has great firepower[]
- His MTMTE's profile depicts his weapon is Silverbolt's electrostatic discharger rifle which can emit blasts of 150,000 volts of electricity.
- His TFU's profile depicts his weapon is stress fracture cannon whose beams find and overload a target's natural fracture points. The result can even be a small earthquake.
Weaknesses[]
- Superion's thought processes are too primitive to allow higher mental function. This results Superion's mind being single-minded, which makes it hard for him to adapt to new circumstances & be innovative, thus restricting him in battle quite often.
- While being enourmously strong & well-armored, Superion actually has some certain "pressure points" which are the seams where Aerialbots merge. These spots are quite vulnerable to attack and probably trade-offs for his agility.
