Heroine Overview

If I can't do something, I'll be holding Class D back... I, who looked down my nose at the others and called them worthless... When it comes down to it, not only I am useless, I'm resolving things with violence. It's utterly absurd...
~ Horikita against Mio.

Suzune Horikita is the deuteragonist of the light novel, manga, and anime series Classroom of the Elite. She started as a first-year student of the Advanced Nurturing High School (ANHS) where she was placed within Class 1-D regardless of her admiring intellect, due to her lack of skill in getting along with others. Nevertheless, initially refusing to, she eventually befriended Kiyotaka, a quiet student who sits right beside him. She is also well-known as the younger sister of the notable president of the Student Council President of the School, Manabu Horikita.

She is voiced by Akari Kitō in Japanese, by Saori Ōnishi in the PV 2015 in Japanese, and by Felecia Angelle in English.

Appearance[]

Suzune is easily depicted as a girl with an outstanding look despite her emotionless and cold attitude. She has long black hair that arrives at her waist along with a long braid tied on her left side with a white hair tie. Her eyes are a mix of purple, orange, and pink color. Her build is very slim, thus alluring the opposite gender with ease, such as Kakeru Ryūen and Ken Sudō.

For attire, she wears the standard female student uniform of the ANHS, which is a crimson color uniform with golden linings, a dark blue ribbon on top of her cleavage, a white short skirt with blue linings below, black thigh-high socks, and a pair of brown regular-looking shoes.

Outside of attending school, her usual outfit comprises of a striped sundress and a sun hat on one occasion. By the pool, she was spotted in a white-colored bikini, and during the first-year survival test, she was seen in a tracksuit of red color.

Personality[]

As a whole, Suzune is a collected and brilliant girl who prefers to show little to no clues of how she feels. Often maintaining a composed demeanor and appearing unbothered by various situations, she dislikes and has little to no intentions of making any friends at the start of the year as a first-year student and prefers to work all by herself for any work in class, unlike Kiyotaka who has a similar attitude compared to her but does possess a degree of making friends despite his similar case of struggle to socialize with those around him. She is candid about her lack of friends, believing that companionship would be a hindrance.

A rare moment of her displaying emotion is evident when she is startled when threatened by older brother Manabu for being placed as the lowest class of the school, leading him to attempt to harm her until Kiyotaka intervened, making it possible for Manabu to be one of the few individuals she fears. Outside of him, her emotional expressions are limited, and she remains unfazed even when threatened by a boy from Class 1-C. Her classmates perceive her as cold and distant due to her minimal communication and tendency to distance herself, fostering an air of superiority. Suzune adopts an antisocial stance, choosing to engage with only a few individuals, notably Kiyotaka Ayanokōji. She harbors distrust toward others, particularly those, like Kikyō Kushida, who attempt to befriend her. In contrast to Kiyotaka, who initially sought friendship, Suzune dismisses it as a distraction, prioritizing her goal of advancing to Class A. Both Kiyotaka and her brother suggest that her focused approach and difficulty working effectively with others contributed to her placement in Class D.

However, her perspective on friendship transforms as the series unfolds. Her uncaring attitude took a different path when she agreed to Suzune by throwing 50,000 points to stop Ken's expulsion following the failure of his test. Despite initially asserting that her actions were solely driven by personal objectives, Suzune's demeanor, particularly her efforts to assist Kiyotaka with studying, suggested a different motive. She strongly defended Ken's case, critiquing him while greatly maintaining the truth of his innocence in the incident.

Relationships[]

Kiyotaka Ayanokoji[]

Main article: Kiyotaka Ayanokoji

The first student to try get along with and succeed in befriending Horikita. Following his older brother's confrontation with Kiyotaka upon trying to threaten his sister to leave the school, she showed her gratitude for saving her despite initially not wanting his help. At the very of start of the series, her, like the other passengers on a bus on, does not bother to let a seat for an elderly woman nearby as another girl on the bus, Kikyō Kushida, demands that anyone on the bus could give their seat to her. This left Kiyotaka to wonder why did she despite having not let his seat for the elderly woman either. This also bothered Horikita as later when they arrived at the high school, she stood in front of him, asking him why he was glancing at her and expressing her arrogance as he replied. Suzune often comments on how unpleasant of a coincidence after encountering Kiyotaka a few times already.

Despite her lone nature, she ended up agreeing to hang out a bit with Kiyotaka until Kushida arrived, leading her to leave as she understood that Kushida was the one who requested Kiyotaka to ask her to get along.

A rare moment of the relaxed side of Suzune can be seen, as she smiled upon reading a message sent by Kiyotaka. Their shared experiences contributed to a growing sense of trust, exemplified when she entrusted Kiyotaka with guarding the boys' tent during the uninhabited island exam, expressing doubt about Yōsuke Hirata's ability to handle it alone. This trust became more apparent as she relied on Kiyotaka when she fell ill, unable to continue participating in the challenge.

Upon being overwhelmed by Mio Ibuki before being discovered by Kiyotaka, Horikita finally admitted the importance of teamwork and even showed her true gratitude to Kiyotaka in the anime for his decision to establish faith within Class D, after having received recognition in the island challenge. In a rare display of affection, Suzune appeared flustered and shy as she thanked him, struggling to maintain consistent eye contact during this moment. However, she also saw through Kiyotaka's decision to make others believe that she was responsible for their victory when Kiyotaka was the one who truly planned everything behind the scenes to cover his own sake. Kiyotaka declined this, leaving Horikita to throw away her skepticism.

Manabu Horikita[]

Among the only people to alter Suzune's behaviour is her older brother whom she greatly admires and seeks for his attention the best she can. Both brother and siblings share many similarities; brillant, serious, and collected. The only thing differenciate them apart is Suzune's socializing habits that sent her down to Class-D, leaving Manabu disappointed, deeming her as an embarassement, and threatened him to harm his younger sister to leave the school until Kiyotaka arrived on the scene to stop his action. Fearing him with sisterly feelings, she desires to follow his path as a someone is recognized as the school's student council president. Manabu's cold nature toward her makes Horikita's tension increase. Regardless of his abusive nature, Manabu is simply a very harsh brother who seeks for the highest fame as her elder brother.

After a brief conflict between the siblings, Manabu expressed surprise upon learning that Suzune had made a friend. Despite her denial, he dismissed her words and left his unsettled sister with advice to strive for advancement. In the midst of their tumultuous relationship, Suzune maintains a description of her brother, sister relationship in her room, hinting at a previous closeness. During the summer outing, although they didn't directly interact, Manabu listened Suzune's speech about D-class aiming for A-class. His sole response was a glaring look at his sister, met with a similar expression from her. Neverthless, it remains unclear as to how in the anime he currently views Horikita.

Trivia[]

  • She is one of the rare individuals to ever be able to trick Ayanokoji into doing something thanks to her cooking skills that Kiyotaka seemingly cannot resist but to taste her dishes.
