Swansea: I have something to say. So shut the fuck up and listen. I spent thirteen years half-cut up to my eyeballs. Drunk, to put it mildly. Then suddenly I saw it, a streetlight shining in my face. 500 Gigawatts of the power of God. A vision of my bloated body found in some ditch. Scared me straight. So I got a collar shirt, mortgage and a credit card. All the things that make a good man. I hoped I could raise my children to be better than their old man. I wanted to believe I was never one setback away from my worst self. But the truth is. Discipline. Drive. Routine. The endless fucking desperation to get shit done. A loving wife? Great kids? Sobriety? I'm telling you. You. Accomplishments I've been chasing my whole life. Never felt as good as I expected when I crossed the finish line... So now that we're at the end. Takin' inventory. Those nights spinning out of my head, sinking into the sofa. Broken glass in my palms. Bleeding dry the funniest thing ever. Old dogs laughing and snarling on a waterbed floor, mocking the moon for daring to show its face. All nausea and wreckage and vomit and ugly cruelty. The only problem in the world an empty bottle. Those were the best days of my life. Yeah... Those were the best days of my life. I got nothing to hide. Ready to face the music. I can see myself for what I am. But you, a cowardly, selfish motherfucker and you can't even see it... I should've been able to protect the kid. If I could have done one thing right, I wish it had been to give him one small chance off this goddamned rock.

Jimmy: Swansea. I'm going to fix everything. We're going to make it.
Swansea: Fuck you.

~ Swansea's final conversation with Jimmy before he is executed.

Swansea is the main antagonist of the 2024 psychological horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Swedish developer Wrong Organ.

He was the mechanic aboard the Tulpar, a cargo ship operated by Pony Express, he finds himself marooned when the co-pilot, Jimmy, crashes the vessel into an asteroid, plunging the crew into chaos. Stranded with only a system's worth of the titular mouthwash as their supply, Swansea begins to drink from the alcoholic contents of the seemingly endless mouthwash. Throughout the game, he attempts to salvage a cryo-pod to give the naive and innocent intern, Daisuke, a chance at survival. However, following Daisuke's tragic death, whom Swansea murdered out of mercy, Swansea embarks on a rampage to confront and kill Jimmy.

Appearance[]

Swansea is a tall middle-aged man with brown short hair and blue eyes and has a noticeable belly, probably due to age. He is depicted with a frown. He wears the yellow and red Pony Express polo shirt, a pair of jeans and white and blue sneakers.

Personality[]

Swansea was initially portrayed as a grumpy, hot-tempered old man who showed little regard for his intern, Daisuke, constantly belittling him for making mistakes and being a general nuisance.

After the Tulpar crashes, Swansea discovers a seemingly endless supply of alcohol-infused mouthwash and quickly abandons his 15 years of sobriety, spending the next few months drinking heavily. During this time, he guards the utility room, claiming it’s flooded with safety foam and warning that clearing it could tear a hole in the ship, dooming the crew. This, however, turns out to be a lie. In reality, Swansea is secretly working to repair the last functioning cryo-pod, implying—at least to Jimmy—that he intends to secure his own survival until rescue by outliving the rest of the crew.

When Daisuke’s wound becomes infected, leaving him in unbearable pain, Swansea reluctantly and tearfully kills him with an axe as an act of mercy. He then turns his focus to Jimmy, chasing him through the ship in a wrathful rampage, a culmination of all the resentment and disgust he had for Jimmy throughout the whole ordeal.

After Jimmy defeats him, Swansea confesses that, despite his frustration with Daisuke’s incompetence and his gruff exterior, he truly cared for him. He admits he admired Daisuke for being the most innocent member of the crew and reveals he was actually repairing the cryo-pod to give Daisuke a chance at survival. He also earnestly confides that he was always dissatisfied with his job, the idea of living as a "good man," and the person he ultimately became—even though he initially seemed arrogant and unable to acknowledge his faults. In his final moments, he bravely reprimands Jimmy for his selfish, cowardly, dishonest, and delusional behavior before Jimmy executes him.

Biography[]

Swansea was the main mechanic of the Tulpar. In his past, he struggled with alcoholism for thirteen years but eventually recovered. He mentions having settled down, marrying, and having children, doing so after seeing a vision of his "bloated body" in a ditch, scaring him straight and forcing him to rethink his trajectory. However, he reveals a dissatisfaction with his life despite his efforts to become a "good man." It's unclear whether he is currently divorced. He had been sober for fifteen years, but after the traumatic crash of the Tulpar and the discovery of mouthwash onboard, he resumed drinking. Prior to the trip on which the game is set, the crew threw him a surprise party.

Swansea gives Anya a note to pass on to Curly. When Curly goes to Utility, he finds Daisuke stuck in foam. Swansea, frustrated with Daisuke’s presence, accuses him of being "talented in all the wrong ways." Curly frees Daisuke and hands Swansea the axe to finish cleaning up the foam, which he keeps for most of the game. The next day, Swansea helps set up for Curly's surprise party. When Curly announces that Pony Express is going under and the crew will soon be out of work, Swansea appears more accepting than the others, feeling it was inevitable, as Pony Express was one of the last manned freighter companies.

After the crash, Swansea finds a functional cryopod and seems to hide it, possibly to prevent Jimmy from causing harm over it. Later, the crew discovers that their cargo consists only of mouthwash, and Anya mentions it’s useless as a disinfectant due to its sugar content. Swansea notices the mouthwash contains 14% ethanol, breaking his sobriety and beginning to drink again. Many of the empty bottles the player finds throughout the game are likely Swansea’s, with a few possibly belonging to Daisuke. About a month after finding the mouthwash, Swansea has a private conversation with Anya, where he might have disclosed the existence of the functional cryopod and learned from her about Jimmy’s assault and her resulting pregnancy.

Another month later, Swansea is found drunk, dancing with the axe in front of a window screen. Jimmy demands the axe, and in a fit of anger, Swansea shatters the screen with it before Jimmy takes it away. Soon after, Anya locks herself in Medical to end her life. Daisuke and Jimmy ask Swansea to let them into Utility to access the vent and enter Medical, but Swansea refuses, naming the asteroid "Wake Rock" in a drunken stupor. Jimmy eventually forces his way in by drugging Swansea with a cocktail of mouthwash, isopropyl alcohol, and sweetener. Swansea, under the influence, lashes out at Daisuke, projecting his insecurities onto him, before passing out and letting Jimmy steal his keys.

When Jimmy finds the cryopod and intact vent, he suspects Swansea of planning to save himself, though it’s heavily implied that he intended it for Daisuke. Jimmy manipulates Daisuke, who goes through the vent and suffers severe injuries. When Swansea awakens, he finds Daisuke critically wounded. He tries to disinfect Daisuke’s wounds with isopropyl, but Jimmy admits he used it in the cocktail. With no other options, Swansea resorts to using mouthwash, which only intensifies Daisuke’s suffering. Later, Swansea stands by Daisuke, lamenting how much he deserved to live and how much he could have learned from him. In a moment of sorrow, Swansea mercy-kills Daisuke with the axe.

Afterward, Swansea confronts Jimmy. He offers him the cryopod, saying he has nothing left to return to. What follows is ambiguous, considering we follow it from Jimmy's perspective; Swansea possibly charges at Jimmy with the axe in Medical, leading Jimmy to escape into the vent. At some point, Jimmy overpowers Swansea, leaving him tied up in Utility. Before his death, Swansea delivers a final monologue, recounting how he turned his life around after fearing he’d die in a ditch. He reflects bitterly on how his "good life" left him unfulfilled, regretting not saving Daisuke and cursing Jimmy for his selfishness.

In a final act, Jimmy kills Swansea, placing him along with the other deceased crew members at a table in a grim tableau with party hats. In one of Jimmy’s hallucinations, he imagines the crew alive and celebrating his birthday—a haunting and delusional echo of happier times. In the end, Swansea’s body is left to rot as Jimmy takes Curly’s place in the cryopod and ends his own life.
