Sylvain Jose Gautier is a major character of the 2019 tactical video game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and its 2022 spin-off sequel, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
He is a member of the Blue Lions House, and a childhood friend of Dimitri, Felix, and Ingrid.
He is voiced by Makoto Furukawa in Japanese and Joe Brogie in English.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Sylvain was born as the second son of Margrave Gautier in the Imperial Year 1160. His older brother, Miklan, was discarded because he did not bear a Crest, but Sylvain did. Miklan was jealous of his brother and attempted to kill him numerous times. Despite Miklan's aggressiveness towards him, Sylvain understood why his brother loathed him. He is also a childhood friend of Dimitri, Felix, and Ingrid.
Academy Phase[]
During the Verdant Rain Moon of 1180, Byleth's class was tasked with subduing a bandit group led by Miklan, whom had stolen House Gautier's Hero's Relic, the Lance of Ruin. If Sylvain is a member of Byleth's class, he can be among the forces confronting his brother. Miklan expresses his lifelong contempt for Sylvain inheriting the Crest of Gautier. Sylvain retorts that it was never his fault that he inherited the Crest nor that their family effectively disowned him. He is horrified when his brother transforms into a Demonic Beast. After the Demonic Beast is defeated, Sylvain laments his brother's death and reclaims the Lance of Ruin. Back at the monastery, the Lance can be given to Rhea or Sylvain, depending on the player's choice.
Azure Moon[]
Sylvain reunites when Dimitri, Byleth, and other Blue Lions students stop the thieves in the monastery. Gilbert reveals that the current Faerghus Dukedom is on the verge of collapse as Cornelia took control of western Paergus by the Empire. House Gautier is one of the houses against the Empire and Sylvain helps them rebel.
After the Imperial forces tried and won the monastic position, the armies of the Kingdom debated the next plan. When Dimitri says they will drag the dead into the Imperial capital, Sylvain opposes the plan, saying trying to calm the dead will only weaken his fighting skills.
When Lord Arundel reveals that Edelgard and Dimitri are family before dying at Deirdru, Sylvain realizes that Edelgard was the girl who Dimitri gave the dagger to and teases him for it.
Once the Kingdom army had occupied Fort Merceus, Dimitri received a letter from Margrave Gautier saying that the conflict within Faerghus had ceased and that he was gathering troops to send troops and supplies to the monastery. Sylvain praises his father for his efforts and asks how he is doing.
After Edelgard's defeat and Fódlan united under Dimitri's rules, Sylvain becomes House Gautier's new Margrave, dedicated to creating a new lifestyle for nobles who no longer need artifacts and Crests.
Crimson Flower[]
If Sylvain was recruited in the Black Eagle Strike Force, Sylvain will abandon House Gautier, accepting a commission to be an Imperial Army general, believing in Byleth more than he does in his own country. Although worried about having to fight his own country and Dimitri, he promises to support Byleth to the very end. If Felix and/or Ingrid were not recruited, he may fight them at Arianrhod. He may also battle Dimitri at Tailtean Plains, where he expresses shock and anger towards his betrayal.
If he is not recruited, he is one of the enemy commanders to fight and respond to Dimitri's request for support on Tailtean Plains. He is killed in the ensuing battle, where he says he was such a fool and apologizes to Dimitri with a dying breath.
