Biography[]

Early life[]

Sypha grew up in Wallachi alongside witches. When she was a child. children of the night, like Carmilla, corrupted numerous men, leading to the witch trials, which in turn, lead to the deaths of many of the witches she grew up with. Both of her parents were murdered in the process. Sypha escaped and was adopted by a Church in Wallachia. During her time as a monk, she would make a deal with spirits to gain mastery over the elements of fire, ice and lightning. Sypha had a blazing desire to demolish everything spoiled by evil and became a hunter for her Church.

Castlevania: Dracula's Curse[]

Sypha meeting Trevor

Sypha meeting Trevor and Grant.

In Wallachia, during 1476, monsters arose to terrorize the people, the Church sent out a party of people to handle the situation as Dracula was believed to be the cause of it. As the people of Wallachia were scared of witches, Sypha disguised herself as a man while working with the hunting party. On a journey, they were captured and killed except for Sypha who was turned to stone. After no messages from the hunting party, the pope of Sypha's church asked Trevor Belmont to defeat Dracula. On the way, Trevor encounters the Cyclops and defeats him, freeing Sypha. The player may take her along as a character who can be swapped with Trevor or leave her, though if Trevor has Grant Dynasty he will have to let him go to continue with Sypha. Additionally, if the player encounters Alucard with Sypha, they may let go of Sypha and take Alucard instead. If the player decides to stay with Sypha while defeating Dracula, the game will give you this message as Dracula's castle is destroyed: "Syfa the Vampire Killer has had a bad life but now since she's met Trevor she's beginning to feel more comfortable about herself."

Post Dracula's Curse[]

After the game, she marries Trevor Belmont and has a daughter with him named Ann and a son named Frediric. Her descendant 150 years after the game is Juste Belmont and. Other distant relatives of Sypha include Charlotte Aulin in the 1900s and Yoko Belnades in the 2000s. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, set in 1797, Alucard would encounter fake zombie versions of Trevor, Grant and Sypha in the inverse version of Dracula's castle. This boss fight has the fake Sypha working with the other zombies to kill Alucard, though this fails. The trio are fought again in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin in the Nest of Evil, where bosses from previous Castlevania games appear, they are fought on the 6th floor.

Having made a deal with elemental spirits, Sypha possesses an array of spells in Dracula's Curse:

  • Flames: Sypha can shoot fire that goes slightly further than Trevor's whip without upgrades.
  • Frozen Crystals: 6 ice crystals shoot out in front, behind and over Sypha in a roughly 170 degree arc which freeze enemies. Frozen enemies can be stood upon. If a crystal touches water, it will freeze along with any enemies inside.
  • Goodness Gracious Great Bolts of Lightning: Three balls of lightning shoot in front, over and below Sypha that home on enemies.

Aside from magic, her only subweapon is the stopwatch. Her spells are do a high amount of damage and her staff, which is her default attack, is quick. However, Sypha suffers from her default staff attack being weak and low range as well as the fact her defense, movement and jumps aren't very good.

Return to Castlevania 21 - Sypha Appears and is an Old Man

Sypha in Captain N: The Game Master.

  • Much of her backstory and life was expanded upon in in a document for Castlevania: Bloodlines written in 1994.
  • She is one of the three companions of Trevor in Dracula's Curse, along with Grant Dynasty and Alucard.
    • This is referenced in Symphony of the Night where Alucard meets zombie imposters of Trevor, Grant and Sypha.
    • She is the only one of the three who isn't fought by Trevor in order to be joined as a companion. Grant was mutated into a monster forced to fight Trevor while Alucard fought Trevor as a test of strength before becoming convinced to join him.
  • In the NTSC and PAL versions of Dracula's Curse, Sypha is referred to as a male in the "Take him with you?" choices due to technical limitations, even though in the ending, she's revealed to be female. In Captain N: The Game Master, she is a male, likely a result from this.
  • "Sypha" is a pun of "cipher".
  • In Castlevania: Bloodlines, she is shown in a flashback along with Trevor.
  • In Castlevania 64, a character named the Fernandez Warrior was originally considered to be Sypha in disguise.
  • Her fighting style in Dracula's Curse is referenced by her distant relative Yoko Belnades in the Julius Mode of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
